Multi-processor support is improved in Vegas 5.0
 

Just downloaded the trial version, and my first test was rendering speed.

I've got a dual-Xeon machine. In old Vegas 4, rendering gets to about 30% processor utilization max.

Rendering to Mainconcept MPEG with no filters, Vegas 5 gets 70% processor utilization, spread evenly across the kernels. Yee-haw!

Add Brightness and Contrast filter, still 70%

Add Color Curves with slight "S" shape, utilization drops to 60%. Still awesome!

The new "Chroma Blur" filter isn't quite as good. The higher the blur settings, the lower the processor usage. But at least they added this filter. :)

Gaussian Blur apparently isn't threaded at all. The tiniest amount of blur in only one direction drops processor usage back down to Vegas 4 levels. But the new Chroma Blur filter might replace Gaussian Blur for my uses anyway.

I plan to play more after a decent night's sleep. So far, I'm quite pleased.

Vegas 5 also still supports Vegas 4 plugins. In particular, DebugMode's PluginPac Adapter works, so we can still use VirtualDub plugins. This also makes me happy. :)

Yes, rendering speeds have definitely improved in Vegas 5.

A NEW feature in Vegas 5 - Right-click any event, choose Reverse - and you're done. So, now you can cut as normal and simply reverse the clip

Now that Vegas 5 is out and touts some incredible new features....I wonder how the mass is going to compare it to Premiere Pro now?! Heck, how about FCP vs V5...NOW! :)

Question regarding upgrading/installation
 

Definitly going for the upgrade ASAP, just not sure if I want the downloaded version or the boxed version. Well...I actually WANT the boxed version but don't know if I have the patience.

Anyway how will the upgrade (Vegas+DVD) install? Will it find my old version of V4 and DVDA1.0 and, well...UPGRADE them. Or will they be a completly new install. I ask because when I installed Sound Forge 7 it installed as a completly new program- I then had Version 6 AND 7 on my system.

I believe Spot will probably have the first one.

Your best bet is to download the 5.0a version of Vegas and the 2.0 version of DVD Architect (whether or not you buy the boxed version). The box version will contain 5.0 instead of 5.0a.

In fact, I would recommend not buying the boxed version as you can get everything from downloading anyway. The only exception is a printed keyboard shortcut card and a "getting started" manual.

When you install, simply enter your serial number and then do the secondary registration - same as you did with Vegas 4.

Vegas 5 does not care if Vegas 4 is on your system or not. In fact, you can have BOTH on your system and both will continue to function normally. (in fact, I have Vegas 4, Vegas 4, DVDA 1, and DVDA 2 all installed and functional right now on the same computer).

Yeah that's exactly what I did when I got the boxed version of Vegas+DVD, rather than installing it from the disc I went and downloaded 4.0c and only used the serial from the instruction guides to install them.

How about if I DO want the printed manuals for V5 and DVDA2? Can they be purchased?

The manuals in the box are just "startup guides". The real manual is in PDF format on the CD/download. You have to print your own manual. Same was true with Vegas 4.

Hmm, now that you mention it- I DO remember it being called the quick start guide. Thanks- I'll be ordering the downloadable Vegas+DVD tonight!
