I don't find Vegas 8.0c to be buggy at all. I have installed 8.1 but have not used it much. When I did use it, it seemed pretty stable but I know some have come across some 32-bit/64-bit compatibility issues with legacy codecs and plugins and such. I don't consider those bugs, but more of a migration issue. I purchased Final Cut Express a few weeks ago and I am extremely dissatisfied with it. As a long time Mac and Windows user with years of experience with Vegas and Premiere (mac and windows), I thought maybe it was time to give the Final Cut series another shot since I primarily use OS X these days, and I was hoping to get away from dualbooting with bootcamp.

I primarily use Vegas and prefer it to Premiere Pro, but I can work within either tool pretty much interchangeably. After getting a 5D Mk II last year and trying to edit its footage, I was beginning to think that maybe Vegas was getting a little long in the tooth, and I still think it has room to improve in several key areas, but after much suffering through several projects in Final Cut Express, I feel like I've been taking Vegas for granted. To me, using Final Cut is like trying to type with mittens on. For an Apple product, it's not very intuitive, and it's VERY slow - it seems like you can't do anything without requiring a render (Really!? I can't preview a fade out on an audio track without first RENDERING the entire track?? wth? And if you need to synchronize audio tracks on the timeline, when you drag a waveform, it turns invisible until you drop it. Not very helpful!). Once you are done with cutting your project, when it's time to render out it is agonizingly slow to render as well. Overall, it just feels archaic in comparison to Vegas.

It seems like Final Cut must be appropriate for certain workflows. Else, why would people recommend it so highly? I can't imagine there are that many Apple supporters out there who automatically assume that there's nothing better out there, but maybe there are?? IMO, if you need to get stuff done quickly (on a deadline), Final Cut is absolutely a non starter.

Going forward I will not be using FCE for anything except maybe generating fancy titles or slates or something, and that's only if Apple won't issue a refund (I'm going to call and ask for one). I don't understand why they don't provide trials. If there were a trial available, I would have known very quickly that I couldn't purchase it. I've mentioned it in another thread already but I would really like to see an OS X version of Vegas. So I guess for now I have to keep on living with bootcamp and will be purchasing windows 7 when it's released. I've already pre-ordered Vegas 9.
