Would there be any problems using these two programs?

The two programs can be used together. To move video back and forth, however, you really need to export to Uncompressed AVI.

As an alternative which works directly with Vegas' timeline, you might want to take a look at Boris Red. Or, give us an idea of what you're trying to accomplish and the may be even more alternatives out there.

I don't have anything specific in mind I'm just at a software purchasing stage and was looking for an additional program that was strictly effects oriented. Any ideas are welcome, I just looked
at AE because I see it so much.

Edward, is the reason for exporting back and forth using Uncompressed AVI simply to avoid any loss of quality due to numerous compressions?

Lastly should uncompressed AVI run at full size display at full frame rate on a relatively quick system?

*I only experimented once with Uncompressed AVI. I found it's incredibly large- much larger than the original footage it was created from- and seemed to not play at 100% frame rate while the preview window was set at best full...if my memory serves me correctly*

No. The real reason is so that each is better able to read the other's output properly. And, yes, uncompressed is HUGE - the reason AE should only be used for SMALL segments.

As an alternative, you could frameserve from Vegas to AE but I believe you still have to render to uncompressed to get back to Vegas.

Why After Effects will have problems with footage output from Vegas encoded as "Video for Windows- DV AVI"? I always thought even the footage captured in Vegas is DV AVI?....

I have no first hand experience with AE and am simply going by what I have read about others having problems with. I'm sure some other options may work - this is the safest one (albeit largest one).

I have one effect in mind which, having seen DSE's recent Sony Showcase presentation makes me believe Vegas could do this better than AE:

Simulate an underwater view, so that it appears the camera is shooting through "shallow" clear water, not deep ocean water.

Any quick solutions for the less technically minded non-proffessional Vegas user?
