Same as Mr Troxel but with 2gb ram. Vegas 6.0d runs like a dream.
Perhaps a little misleading to call this a laptop though - if you sat it on your lap you'd be enjoying second degree burns and crushed thighbones within minutes. It's an Alienware monster! |
GPU acceleration plays no role in what Vegas DV or HDV does. (but may have lots of impact on any other GPU-intensive programs you use, such as 3D apps.)
Most people who've tried dual-head, dual-display will never go back. I've been told that nVidia drivers are more stable with Vegas than Matrox, but I think a lot of people are using Matrox as well as nVidia. On a new fast HDV editing machine that supports full rate playback of HDV or Cineform digital intermediates, one solution for monitoring is use of the windows secondary display for preview (came with Vegas 6). The best way to do this is with a display that supports 1920x1040, which is the full HDV rez with square pc pixels. A Dell FPW 2405 24" LCD will support this rez, your graphics card would need to support it as well if you take this approach to previewing HDV/CF. ***edit*** Dell's site says your graphics card must support WUXGA resolution (1920x1200) to run the 2405. |
pan/crop tool
I've got a clip that I want to reduce in size to use as picture in picture. I also want to crop the picture by zooming in - composition isn't great but as this will be a PIP the drop in quality on the zoom shouldn't be noticeable.
I can get the event pan/crop to EITHER zoom OR position but i can't figure out how to get it to do both. Do I have to use track motion for part of this? Thanx Ian |
That's the easiest way. (IMHO)
|
If you are panning/cropping, and still need positioning, the only way you can adjust position is:
1. Track motion 2. Parent track with mask using pan/crop to place. Since you're already zoomed in and have compromised resolution, you'll lose nothing by using track motion to position. You can also use Pan/crop to position *if* you're not zooming in on the image. |
How to remove all Video Fx from a project
I apparently selected approximately 70 percent of the clips in a complex wedding video, and I must undo the color correction I applied, which has ruined the movie. I am currently going clip by clip and removing the color correction, but with 5 tracks of video and hundreds of clips, it is tedious, not to mention I could easily miss some...any help would be greatly appreciated. If the effect had been applied to the entire project, I know that I could instantly remove it, but it wasn't. Thanks in advance.
|
you can use the "remove all FX" script to remove every filter on the project if that's what you'd like to do.

Thank you Douglas
Much thanks, and best wishes to you and yours!

Weird thing happening...
I keep my raw video data on an external "J:" drive. My .veg files are on my "C:" drive, along with my rendered .avi's.
This has always worked fine. Whenever I edited my master .veg file (consisting of rendered .avi's) I never needed to have my "J:" drive turned on. Only when I edited the individual scene .veg files, did I need to turn on the external drive. Recently, I edited my master .veg file, adding two clips that I had copy/pasted from other .veg files (not rendered .avi files.) I then took out those copy/pasted .veg clips, replacing them with rendered .avi files, and saved the master .veg file. Now, whenever I recall the master .veg file, it says that those two clips are offline and I need to turn on my "J:" drive to download them into the master .veg. I've tried deleting the whole section where the editing took place and it still comes out the same. I even took all the clips out (an empty timeline) and saved it as a test file and when I bring up that test .veg file, it still asks for the missing .veg files. Any ideas what I can do? Thank you, Ruben |
What about copy/pasting the project into a new timeline and resaving that?
|
That's because the files are still in the media pool for the project, even though you are not using them. Select the Vegas media pool, there should be a little lightning bolt icon that cleans out unused media.

David/Douglas - thanx for your help

After Effects first, then to Vegas....
I have just captured my video to the PC and am working now with the raw footage. I'm using Vegas 6 and After Effects 6 for the purposes of this question....
I would like to bring in to AE a ten second segment, make it rain using AE's effects, then export that segment to Vegas where it will stay as part of a standard, non-widescreen, dvd project. Must I purchase a plugin from, I believe, forgedimages, or frameserve? Can someone provide me with a simple tutorial/link that details specifically what my settings should be? I have tried exporting the completed footage to Vegas as uncompressed AVI, but after I do, I'm seeing faint, horizontal lines across the footage in Vegas or the raindrops effect has dramatically increased in speed for whatever reason. That's why I'm in need of a comprehensive tutorial; is their a "sticky" or link to a tutorial that I'm missing on this matter? Thank you-- Dale |
Backward Compatability
I have Vegas 6 at work (I do video for a school district), and Vegas 5 at home. I sometimes like to work at home, but the Vegas 6 project files won't open in 5.
Is there a solution to this problem that I don't know about? Since I'm the only user on my work machine with Vegas 6, does the license allow me to install it at home as well? It seems a little vague to me. But because there's only one person ever using the program, I thought it might be okay for the second install. Any thoughts? Here's was the EULA says: "non-exclusive license to use the Software on one (1) computer at a time upon the terms and conditions set forth in this Agreement. " It doesn't say Install, it says Use. Since I will only be using the software on one computer when I'm at home and only one computer while I'm at work, it sounds like I'm safe. Or am I dreaming? |
Gian Pablo,
You were exactly right. The little lighting bolt in the Media Pool did the trick. Thank you so much, Ruben |
The license covers three installs. But do you own the license?

Rob, I work for a local commuity college and I have the versions of Vegas, DVDA & Sound Forge that I use at work installed on my home computer. Sony (and Sonic Foundry before them) have never questioned it.
|
Hi Dale
Can you not just export the 10 second clip as an AVI, import into AE, then render it out as a new AVI with the rain effect, then finally re-import the new clip into Vegas? I know Adobe has better integration, but I use this method for clips that need AE effects and it works fine.. Hope this helps Graham |
Try some footage (free) from www.detonationfilms.com. They have rain against a black background (as well as many other full screen effects) and then you can chromakey the effect in Vegas or AE.
|
Thanks, guys. David, the license is in my name and workplace.
The Adobe After Effects license specifically spells out that it's okay to use two computers, work and home, as long as both aren't being used at the same time. So I was hoping that Sony's is basically the same. Sounds like it is. Thanks again. |
Alienware
I run an Alienware mj12-7700:
P4HT 3.1GHz 2.5GB DDR2 RAM 160GB RAID 0 stripe (7200RM ATA133) GeForce Go 6800 This system runs Vegas 6 like a dream. Render times aren't bad especially considering that I have the raw data on the same RAID as the render location (I think the RAID part helps a lot). Unfortunately due to Windows design limitations only 1/2 of available RAM is allowed to be used by applications. The rest is reserved for the kernel aka OS. So pack in the RAM (but 32bit OSes can only address a few gig) so don't go crazy. The real benefit is in the dynamic RAM preview and the ability to preview footage in real time with a few effects applied. In case any readers haven't read the threads I have written in regarding this topic before, this new laptop with hyperthreading (pretend dual CPU / dual core) is only 3% faster rendering the exact same video than my 4 year old dual Athlon MP system wtih only 512MB of RAM. jason |
Yay AW systems
serriously..... these are mobile desktops. You cannot actually sit them on anything besides a hard flat surface due to all the fans on the bottom.
The part of the system right above the hard drives, which is the mouse pad, gets roasting hot when I am rendering because those two drives are spinnign and writing like crazy. jason |
Review
I just downloaded Cinescore (trial version) from The Sony site, while I am waiting on my order to come, and thought I would give the group an IMHO review.
The software has the same layout as Vegas, Acid, Sound Forge, etc. The concepts of the software are fairly easy to learn. I had no problem learning how to change the "mood", "intensity", and "tempo" of the music. When the music is generated, you can add hints to modify several of the parameters. I was hoping to be able to find a way to synchronize a specific frame to a musical event, i.e. a down beat to a frame. I couldn't determine how to make this happen. Since I've only worked with Cinescore for a couple of hours, it might be possible but I just couldn't find it. It is possible to generate a video with the new soundtrack or generate the sound track only. By generating the sound track only, I am sure that I could then synchronize a specific frame to a down beat, but within Vegas, not Cinescore. I had two problems: 1) The soundtrack did not exactly match the length of the video I was making. I could adjust the length that Cinescore automatically selected but even then it might not exactly match the length of the video. 2) I couldn't find a way to render for 24 fps. It only seemed to render in 29.97 fps. This could be due to the fact that I was using the trial version but it seemed that all of the other features worked just fine. The trial version only had a couple of themes. I ordered the regular version through my company and am hoping that I don't have to pay extra to get additional themes. You can download the 30 day trial version at: http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/dow...p2.asp?did=674 |
Jesse:
I downloaded the demo, but where are the sample themes ? What did I miss. |
Dell Inspiron 8200, 1.7g , 512mb ram , 1 40g 4200rpm system drive , 1 40g 5400 rpm capture drive , on board firewire.
I know it's old but works fine.I use for capturing multi-cam( 4) shoots, premixed, capturing audio, editing and rendering.I have it networked to the desktop usually, but does all these idependantly just fine. The only reason I would upgrade is if it breaks or when I go HD or maybe when I gotta have faster rendering. |
Thanks for the suggestions. I will try it.
Does anyone use the free Frameserver plugin? I'm told (correctly?) that there are some scaling issues/differences between the two applications, so I was wondering, if that is true, what my New Composition settings should be in AE for optimal results. |

Trying to import Quicktime video - only comes out as audio?!?!
This isn't the first time this has happened, I have a quicktime movie that runs with quicktime (video and audio), but when I bring it into VEGAS and try to run it, it only gives me the audio stream and not the video. What am I doing wrong? I have upgraded my quicktime to the newest version of Quicktime.
|
Chris,
You've probably figured this out already, but the sample themes come up when you click on "Generate Music" on the icon bar at the top. The two themes are "Blizzard of Sparks" and "The Monaco Diamond", on the left side of the pop up window. On the right side of the pop up window are the variations (and they vary greatly) of each theme. Hope this helps. |
Ultimate S Question/Help
I recently downloaded the Ultimate S plugin for trial. It seems to work very well for the multi-cam work I was doing. I am currently using Vegas 5.0. I would like to check out the live switching ability that UltS offers in V 6.0. Anyways, after the trial had expired I had to figure out how to remove the timecode from some of my footage. I notice that this could be done by removing the timecode plug-in under media fx for each clip. I was able to resize and remove the timecode from all my footage, but I have another problem. There is a clip that I copied and pasted on the same track. After the first clip plays at regular speed, I reversed the second (copied) and played back at alternating speeds. The problem that I have with the second (copied) clip is that it reveals the timecode in the lower right corner. I look under the media fx and found that the timecode plug-in was not being used. I pre-rendered the footage to see if the timecode would go away (but it didn't).
Is there any other way to remove the timecode from this project? I noitce in the Ultimate S interface you could remove time code, but my trial version has expired. THanks. Al Rodgers |
Is there another entry in the media pool for the reversed subclip? The timecode effect has to be removed from that entry as well.
|
That did the trick. Why is it that when I clck on the reversed clip on the timeline it didn't show any media effect being used? Is this because the sub-clip on the timeline just reflects the setting of the original clip?
Thank you for your help. BTW I also checked out your Excalibur plug-in. |
The sub-clip always refers back to the original media but will have it's own effects in the Project Media. Therefore, only removing from the original media would not also remove it from the reversed sub-clip - that must be done separately.
|
Yeah, found it not long after I posted. Thanks.
This seems an awful lot like Sonic Fire Pro. Would be nice if their music was interchangeable. I will have to check it out. |
u sure its quiktime? it could well be MP4, as ive never had an issue with actual QT

Vegas 6 - HELP! Trying to purchase
As I'm posting I'm sitting on hold with sony trying to purchase Vegas 6. I've been on hold for 1 hour 28 minutes... I know what kind of idiot would wait that long. Well me, I guess.
All I want to know is if I buy the download... can I get the disks as well because I will be replacing this computer in the next month or couple and I don't want to have to re-buy the software obviously. I know I could just order the boxed set and not have to worry, but remember... I'm the idiot who would wait on hold for an hour and 32 minutes. Actually it's because I'm in Canada and it's brutal waiting for stuff from the US sometimes. I went to "The Sony Store" retail the other day, and the dweebs there hadn't even heard of the product. They looked it up and finally agreed with me that they do sell the product. They said they would have to 'special order' it and it would likely take ONE MONTH. They also wanted me to pre-pay!!! If anyone has the answer, can they post. 1 hour 35 minutes... TIA Ken. |
Ken, just download the latest version, burn it to a CD or two and file it somewhere safe.
Even if you lose it, Sony keeps a record of all your serial numbers so reactivating it is very easy. Mike |
https://www.sonymediasoftware.com/sh...ory.asp?id=109
That should take you into the Sony store to purchase Vegas or Vegas with DVDa-2 things -FIRST make sure you upgrade (free) after you install the software to the latest version. It should be 6D. Also you can burn the downloaded EXC file to a CD and make your own hard copy of the program. I do that with every DL'd program including Vegas-you never know when the ol' machine is going to decide to die on you. It's silly to wait for hours on hold. HTHs Don I guess we're all thinkin' the same way at the same time. Hmmmm, scary ;-) Don |
Are effects applied before the volume envelope or after?
What gets applied first; the envelope or the track FX? Obviously, the result will be different.
|
Thanks Guys!
That's why I love this forum.
I post a question, check out another thread and return to find an answer. I'm still on hold BTW, 1 hour and 54 mins. Thank god for hands free. This freaking music on hold is a short loop and driving me crazy.... I won't get it out of my head for the rest of the day I'm hanging up now (it's hard to let go after nearly 2 hours). 1 hour and 57.... |
