I expect most of the modern cameras can shoot all sorts of rates. The manufacturers have restricted to a set that are part of the specs. Sony in particular has up to now restricted their cameras to the published specs and I expect restricted 24P for the reasons I had mentioned not wanting all sorts of consumer support for video that didn't look very good or very bad if technique is not adequate. Since they have now included 60p on the new range of cameras I just wonder when the spec will change !!!

Ron, it looks like your suggestion to shoot 720p might be spot on. So far I like the way it's converting.
