Does the pointer change into a "+"?
I don't think it's been a plus sign all along, I probably hit some key by accident. I just got Vegas Pro 12 4 days ago, and there's so much to get acquainted. I wish there was a "reset" option, to get everything to the default settings.

Press and hold CTRL+SHIFT when click to start Vegas (including an answer to UAC warning, if the UAC is turned on).

You clicked on the "Split Screen" button. Turn that option back off and it will no longer be a "+" sign. It's the button above the preview screen that looks like a circle that is half dark and half light. Look it up in the help file. It really is a powerful feature.
