crop an sd clip for pip in hd video

Well Its been ages sense Ive been here. Im trying to do something I did in the past and darn if I can figure it out today.

I have a sd wide screen shot that I want to place in my hd video shrunken up to go in top left corner.
I get the two black bars on the side of the video and I want to cut them out mask them or something so I just seen the widescreen video with out the bars.

Thank you for taking the time.

Perhaps combine the pan/crop tool with the Cookie Cutter plugin.

you might have to adjust the video to be the same aspect ratio as your project... in the Pan/Crop Tool, right click on the image and select "Match Output Aspect".

Another way to do it is to use the pan/crop tool to crop it then render to a new track.

Edit: Then pan/crop it again to the desired size and position.

pan/crop the clip to eliminate the black bars,
then use track motion to resize & position it on the screen?

PIP would be on a track above the full screen clip.
Maybe.

I think doing the following is probably the simplest solution. Place your top track Pan & Crop image where you require it to be. Now open up the P&C window for that clip and go down in the P&C window and check the box marked "Mask." Now use the square mask tool to select just the section of the image section you require. In the example below I have an image #1, color bars P&C'd over a color grad. In image #2 it is exactly the same thing but with the White and Blue bars masked out.
