Can the text resolution setting default value be changed? I see no downside to using the 1440x960 setting all of the time...the edges really do look better..

Yeah, DVDA creates pretty poor looking text, that's for sure. I usually prepare the text for my menu using other 3rd party progs, like Cool 3d Studio or Boris Grafitti, or sometimes just do it as part of the background menu video in Vegas.
You would think keeping the text looking great in DVDA or Vegas would be a main priority for Sony...perhaps in the Vegas 8/DVDA 5 versions. Sony, you listening?
