Brian Huey March 18th, 2004, 05:24 PM http://myhome.spu.edu/bhuey/UGA/Space_The_Documentary.wmv
Just a fun little project I put together with some friends for a small art festival they had at their house. The theme was "Space" so we did the project on the space of their house.
It's three and a half minutes long and I shot most of it using my homebuilt semi-steadicam.
Cheers,
Brian
Cyril Christian March 18th, 2004, 08:17 PM Pretty cool, nice vibe, and one more thing: steadicams rock.
Bryan Mitchell March 18th, 2004, 10:18 PM I thought that in the beginning of the movie there were a few places where there were too many cuts. It seemed like your intentions were to cut to the music more so than for dramatic effect. This happened right around when he fell in the grass, and was getting back up. I also noticed a continuity error around there. It seems he gets up twice. At some points in your movie, the cutting to the music works well.
It wasn't at all dark on my monitor, but nothing ever is.
I agree with alex on the alarm sound timing.
The idea of the eye effect was cool. It seemed a little too strong and unnatural at times though. Is it possible to give the effect a 50% opacity to the natrual eye?
Consider cutting part of, or changing the part where he is putting the arrow on the bow. Mabye I'm completely wrong, but it seems like hunting is what his guy is all about, and the way he fumbles with the arrow seems unpro.
Also, when he starts to chase after him, consider cutting a half of a second there because it looks like he was waiting for a cue before starting to chase after him.
Possibly try adding a slow motion on the knife portion of the cut. Along with a intensifying sound/music effect.
I enjoyed your movie, so don't get me wrong. It sounded like you wanted alot of feedback so I watched your movie a few times. Hopefully all of it was very constructive, and if you agree with any of it, you can try it out.
Best of luck,
Bryan
Cyril Christian March 18th, 2004, 10:38 PM You need one of those bad 80s sound effects for when the killer fires the arrow.:)
Brett Erskine March 19th, 2004, 02:05 AM Hey Brett nice demo reels.
Thanks Brett. Guess no one else liked them.
Yeah they did Brett.
Well Brett your the only one that replied.
Well as long as you like them Brett. Just dont let it make you crazy.
Alright Brett.

Ozan Biron March 19th, 2004, 03:44 AM Hey peeps.
Been awhile since ive posted some stuff... Heres a commercial im doing for fun! Two man crew... me filming and my friend driving! Filmed on my 100a on 30p mode with simple color correction. Theres no sound and its just random selected clips... so it wont make any sence! The real version is 90 seconds long.. hope to finish in next couple of days. until then... heres a sneek peak.

Rob Lohman March 19th, 2004, 04:56 AM I mean that some scenes had a much warmer tone than others,
or one looked more "filmic / professional" than others.
Rob Lohman March 19th, 2004, 05:51 AM Pretty neat indeed! I did notice your shadow on a wall one time
though :)
Brad Richmond March 19th, 2004, 06:12 AM Hey Brett. I saw them and I liked them. You have many interesting scenes in your demo reels...made me want to see some complete pieces.
Nice photography and editing, thanks for sharing your work!
I hope you didn't go crazy before you got this reply! <G>
Federico Dib March 19th, 2004, 06:15 AM Bryan,
Thanx for the feedback... A lot of Feedback is what I need. Since I had to drop out of filmschool, this is the only way to have some interactive learning. And friends and family, well, are friends and family.. so I thought I could catch up some more pro or objective feedback around here.
A lot of what you said has been told to me by other people. And yes I do agree with a a few of the comments, for example:
The Eyes FX I first did it more "natural" like you said.. but when I watched a few times I thought It needed more.... now It seems I´m wrong since it´s commentary number 1 from most people.
All the comments I´m writting down on "changes consideration" list for when I watch the short again in a few weeks. And hopefully I could watch it with another eyes to do the FINAL CUT.
And Cyril... that thought actually crossed my mind a few days ago... but I want to somehow try to blend the FX with the music... make it a part of it...
Imran Zaidi March 19th, 2004, 08:26 AM Your footage has a very nice look. Can you describe your process a bit and what you accomplished in post as opposed to on set to get that look?
Kyle Kauss March 19th, 2004, 10:00 AM very cool dude you shot it well
one little thing some shots where hand held and you could tell and the very next shot was still kinda through me off a bit but nothing that big and that may be how you wanted it
Brian Huey March 19th, 2004, 12:09 PM I decided to leave that in so I'd have a little part in it!
Cheers,
Brian
Dan Holly March 19th, 2004, 04:05 PM Pugetropolis "flats" rock due to the view.......
I was hoping for more shots of the view just to remember where I used to live......
Nice fun stuff !!
Riley Harmon March 19th, 2004, 09:36 PM www.avengersgaming.com/~dead/trip2.wmv
here is a lil video i did when i was really really really really bored, my friend was at my house and i told him stand up against my greenscreen (green cloth from walmart lol) and I went from there, just boredom and art mixed
note:must have windows media 9
Rob Lohman March 21st, 2004, 10:59 AM That was pretty neat. At least till the STOP error. I didn't liked the
last part too much. The greenscreening seemed to have worked
okay, any tips etc. on that?
Riley Harmon March 21st, 2004, 12:44 PM well on greenscreening, i used a very smally piece of green cloth from walmart, i shoot with a digital 8, so it doesnt pick up color very good, i dunno, i just manually exposed, 3 point lighting on the subject, room lighting on the screen, keylight for after effects
http://www.thefoundry.co.uk/ae_downloads1.html#keylighthttp://www.thefoundry.co.uk/ae_downloads1.html#keylight FREE just download one of the upgrades, its weird///
thats about it, i color corrected a little bit before keying. i guess i was lucky? i dunno i cant really remember what all i did
Haasim Mahanaim March 23rd, 2004, 11:28 AM Admit it, you just made that video to show off that awesome home.
It was an interesting video exercise, lots of energy, good music, nicely shot and well framed. And I really loved the segement where the deskguy came down the stairs and began playing kickball. I really like the way the camera remained stationary for a moment before following him. Nicely done.
My only criticism is that you crossed the axis on your first close up of the guy playing the guitar. It really stuck out and felt awkward. - And it also seemed a bit weird when you had moving video interrupted by perfectly still closeups. It ruined the momentum.
Ahmad Humeid March 25th, 2004, 04:34 PM Over the last few weeks my design company, SYNTAX, (www.syntaxdigital.com) has been totally busy working with our friend Zeid Nasser at MediaScope to set up immedia:04, Jordan's first internet and mobile media conference. Our team came up with the name 'immedia' and the tagline 'are you ready for generation immediate?'. The conference was targeted at Jordan's advertsing agencies and marketing managers who definately need to learn more about the benefits of mobile and internet marketing.
We designed the event's logo and all its marketing materials. See the poster at
www.360east.com/blogfileupload/immedia04.gif
As I have developed a special interest in digital filmmaking over the past year, I decided that the event deserves a 'decent' opening video (although there ws no budget for it) which I scripted, casted, shot and edited myself.
www.360east.com/blogfileupload/immedia04_video_web.mov
(5MB Qucktime movie)
I used my Canon XM2 to shoot the material, mainly using Amman's streets as my backdrop. The whole thing was edited on my G4 PowerBook (using iMovie for capturing and Final Cut Express for editing, color correction and effects). I also 'composed' the music for the 1 minute video using Apple's Soundtrack.
Let me know what you think.

Rich Lee March 25th, 2004, 05:32 PM I like it, Really nice work! definitly has potential! I think some editing is in order to make it a bit shorter, maybe try cuting one at 30seconds. I feel like it could also use a bit of post work to enhance the look of it, but not much. The girls are cute too, that always helps!
Good work!
Rob Lohman March 28th, 2004, 04:32 AM Has a very nice feel to indeed! As Rich also pointed out, I would
definitely shorten the piece. It's too long I'd say. Oh, and tell
the guy behind the desk I want my phone back! <g>
Ahmad Humeid March 28th, 2004, 12:51 PM Thanks for your comments. This was the first video I produced that was shown in public (well, before, I once did a 5 min short documentary as part of a workshop and I did some artistic video projection work at an art festival in late 90s).
When the video went up on the big screen for the first time in front of over 250 people, I started seeing that the whole thing should have been more tightly composed. Maybe faster cuts, less headroom or "context" around people, more color variety could have helped.
My mistake was that I only started previewing it on bigger screens (like my TV) late into the game. Seeing it projected on a huge screen at the conference was a bit of a disappointment (and a lesson) for me personally.
Next time I will definitely test an early rough cut on a bigger screen much earlier. It is amazing how deceiving the small preview sizes on a laptop screen can be when one edits and previews exclusively on a laptop. Everything looks so compact and colorful.
The client was extremely happy, so I'm being a bit "over self-critical" here :). Also I consciously did not want to produce something that looked too polished, high tech or "film like". Our whole branding concept for this conference was that net and mobile technologies are about people.
Another interesting fact is that for this minute of video, I shot about 50 minutes of tape. During my initial selection process I had 18 minutes of usable clips on my laptop. It was a real pain selecting just a few seconds from every shot to put together the final video.
That's enough blabbering for now.. Any input is appreciated.
Rob Lohman March 28th, 2004, 03:25 PM As long as the client is happy Ahmad! <g>
Clark Kline March 29th, 2004, 12:28 PM <<<-- Originally posted by Rob Lohman : I mean that some scenes had a much warmer tone than others,

yeah, there are definately a few shots that need color correction more than others in the teaser. in the context of the film, the different looks make sense, as each story has it's own look and such but the general consensus i'm getting is in the teaser there needs to be a bit more consistency.
thanks for taking a look at it!
Clark Kline March 29th, 2004, 12:30 PM <<<-- Originally posted by Kyle Kauss : very cool dude you shot it well

thanks,
yeah we wanted to throw a variety of different shots in, a few people mention the 2 standing on the sunset as being jarring at first, but i kinda dig the juxtaposition.
Trevor Trombley March 30th, 2004, 05:49 PM I wrote the script for this particular short film, and also lent my Sony TRV-950 to the director who also used his VX1000.
The running time is 14 minutes, but i feel as though it could be trimmed substantially.
Anyway, hope you enjoy it.

Adam Lawrence March 30th, 2004, 08:25 PM thanks for the feedback guys...... trying to improve my 12 hour production and post skills.....
The point of the movie is very obscure and more understandable within the intended audience. It wouldnt make sense if i were to explain it but just wanted some feedback on the technical spectrum.
Thanks again.
Rob Lohman March 31st, 2004, 03:36 AM It's indeed a bit on the long side. I liked some things like the
office passing of time shot and the pieces with the tips jar. Acting
was good with some scenes but very bad with others (especially
the main character accusing the "payoff guy"). I also thought it
was a bit over the top for my taste and I really thought the
reason why the guy gets punched is not believable (with his
hands and arms). I would've cut to him straight getting kicked
out instead of her coming to him and all that.
Gustavo Godinho March 31st, 2004, 12:27 PM the link is working?
Adam Lawrence March 31st, 2004, 12:33 PM looks like its broken...our server is down at the moment...will be up soon i hope... ill try to move it and re-post in the meantime..
Adam Lawrence March 31st, 2004, 01:31 PM ok looks like its back up now.
Thanks
Trevor Trombley April 1st, 2004, 08:31 PM Yeah, When I look back on this particular project I wish there were some way I could turn back time and direct it. There are certain nuances I wanted to include that the written word couldn't achieve.
Plus there is no way the original 8 page script should be 14 minutes long on screen.
The Director handled the source material with a very dark tone, which wasn't my intention at all. I wanted to keep it light, but at the same time have an edge to it.
Oh well, At least something I've written is out there in circulation. Now if only I could get my next short film made. *sigh*

Keith Loh April 2nd, 2004, 06:14 PM In the second video, there is a beeping at the very end. What is that?
Otherwise, these are pretty effective and convey the message well.
Is this for their website? For the web, I think you should look at the delivery closely. I had to wait some time to get the videos and I'm on an OC3.
Wayne Orr April 2nd, 2004, 08:06 PM Jim, I'm absolutely speechless.

Alex Melnikov April 4th, 2004, 11:48 AM Oh man. There should be a warning in your post or something. I clicked the link while having my freshly made morning coffee, lol
Looks like lighting has been different in many scenes because you were shooting them at different time and probably different locations. Like when he is sitting in the office and then you show his hands typing. I guess the only way to change that is do some color corrections in post. I liked the idea. The scene when he was trying to steal pennies from the donations bin was too long and I had to fast forward it a little bit. :-)
Good work overall!
Jim Hendrie April 4th, 2004, 12:41 PM Some brief replies...
Keith, the beeping you are referring to is from a timer. We had it set for a specific time (to represent the amount of time it might take for an attacker to be incapacitated by a gunshot wound) so when it goes off we yell "blue" to end the drill. In this case, we didn't turn it off very quickly and it worked really well as a trailer.
As far as the time it takes to download, we have found that Windows downloads it once, and then again to show it. This seems to happen on most sites (except Apple's own). Mac users seem to have no problems. Are you using Windows? Do you have any tricks or recommendations?
Wayne, in the absence of any other comments from you i'm going to take your speechlessness as a good thing (please oh please oh please). ;-)

Pasi Rutanen April 4th, 2004, 01:30 PM Hello, im new here, just wanted to say that I have a little trailer for my so-called "lifestyle" film for everyone to check out.
Hope it "teases" the viewer to see more since the movie is done and awaiting encoding for the net. Please post your comments on it.
new host, this should work smoother

Sherwin Noorian April 5th, 2004, 12:03 AM At the cafe table there were some bad shot selections. I don't think the "character's perspective" shots work. Also the car crash scene.... he's running on a sidewalk then suddenly they are in a parking lot? And the bleeding was way too much to be believable
Rob Lohman April 7th, 2004, 01:09 AM It was edited okay and had a pretty good pacing for it. I've just
seen way too much of this kind of footage to be interested, sorry.
I also didn't like the transitions in the end (such transitions almost
always look cheap in my mind) or the ever changing frame size.
But again, I thought the editing was good.
Dustin Waits April 7th, 2004, 08:22 PM Sunday was my first paying DV job. Someone asked me to make a video of their grandparents 50th anniversary dinner party. It was my first one so its not great so any critisism and tips are accepted. The audio sucks. I was in a square room with tons of people in it so I had ambience bouncing off every wall so it threw my little cheapy Azden all outta wack. The lighting was also pretty bad in alot of shots because it was an all glass room. Heavy backlighting but I was able to compensate for most of it by over exposing. Anyway, here is the beginning of it...
http://www.bmxbums.com/videos/anniversary.mov
http://www.bmxbums.com/videos/anniversary.wmv
And it keeps going after that with more interviews and stuff. I'm not done with it yet but I think its going to end up being around 10 minst long. Maybe a little longer.
Kirill Bichutsky April 7th, 2004, 11:22 PM Hey Dustin.
Okay, I am definetely no expert... nor have I done any "party" :) videos... but I am gonna go ahead and give you my 2 cents.
In your intro, "April 4, 2004" fades in over white. Try having the palm trees fade in and then the "April 4, 2004" fade in over that, but make sure it stands out and is legible.
Your next fade to the outside of the building... I think you might want to fade in text of whose anniversary it is - "The Johnsons 50th Anniversary Bash!" (<- wow that's corny).
Maybe you should consider scrapping one of the outside shots... they both show the same building just 2 different angles. I prefer keeping the zoom out shot.
Once you start showing the couple and guests... maybe cut your shots a little shorter and later on cut back to it... but don't make them as long as you have them... just a bunch of people talking and we can't hear them.
One last criticism... why the sudden black & white shot? It seems lone.
The Goods - I like the musical choice... very calm and "oldie", I guess. Lighting isn't bad at all. The sound is a little hard to hear sometimes, but at the final interview with the guy & girl... sound is fine. BTW, I like the transition... zoom into the lake and fade in the interview(s).
Basically for a complete stranger like myself, I begin to pick out flaws and find parts "boring". But I guess for anyone there its all fun and nostalgic... I mean I love watching my home movies, but I'm sure you'd kill yourself having to watch them.
But, good job and I hope I've helped either that, or made an ass out of myself. :)
Travis Cossel April 8th, 2004, 12:35 AM Definately do something about the intro text on the white background. It's way too difficult to read, especially for the older crowd that the video is geared towards. I would also lose the first outside shot of the building, just take it out.
The pull-out from the building fading to the zoom-in on the couple was awesome; a great way to introduce the setting and the couple. Overall I though the pace of your editing matched with the music and the event, so good job. I didn't really mind the quick switch to b&w, but then again, I'm pretty tired right now, so who knows on that. The fade past the couple to the water was also great, but I would make sure your dissolve ends before that guy walks in front of your camera at the end. It ruins a great shot/dissolve combo.
Audio was okay. I film a lot of weddings, and that means receptions, which are a nightmare for audio, even with a shotgun mic.
By the way, I checked out your bmx site, and watched the two Naples trailers. Nicely done on both. Although that second one had me holding my own shin. Ouch!
Dustin Waits April 8th, 2004, 10:07 AM Haha. Oh man I forgot about that black and white clip. I was going to add some more black and white shots in there but I decided not to. I guess I forgot to take that one out. Oh well. I'll take it out when I do the final one. Thanks for all the compliments and critisism. I think for the first title "april 4th 2004" I will leave that up during the palm tree shot, then for the first shot of the building I will put up the "so and so's anniversary" title and leave it up through both building shots. Maybe this will help blend the two shots of the building so it doesnt seem like its one too many shots of the same thing. If it doesnt work then I'll have to go through and find some other clip to fit in there, that way I dont have to retime everything. Oh and with the Text on the white background...it looks perfect in photoshop, I think the video played on the resolution of these computer monitors gets thrown off. I've had a few do that, so I'm gonna check it on my television set when I get home to see what it will really look like. If it still looks kinda distorted I will change it. But then again I'm gonna fade it over to the palm tree anyway so it may just stay. Don't know for sure. I'll just have to wait and see what everything looks like.
Thanks again everyone!

Peter Koller April 10th, 2004, 01:24 PM Hi there,
long time no movie, but finally at least a teaser for my second one: THE SKRYPT
www.kop11.com
Shot completely with the xl1, the 3x wide-angle, studio1-adapter, a lousy no-name mic (baaad mistake), a few construction lights and some diffusion gels for the lights.
The teaser was created completely in Vegas 4 with a few bits of the "music" done in Magix Music Maker 2004. The final film will also have some tweaking from After Effects.
Have fun watching it!
Crits, good or bad is welcome and nervously awaited :-)
Cheers, Peter
