Mark Bournes February 13th, 2007, 08:28 AM Lisa, Thanks for the details. If you're just shooting for 2 hours and handing off the tape you could charge a half day rate. My estimation would be between $350 - $500. That may seem like a lot to the client, but when you figure in your rate to shoot for 2 hours, gear, drive time, tape stock and so on, this is a fair range. If you're hoping to get future business from this client, you can discount your rate 10-15% but future business is not guaranteed unless you have it in a contract. So make sure you get paid fairly for the shoot. You can always work out any editing rates in the future. In fact you could tell him you'll cut him a discount if he hires you for the editing, since he used you as the shooter. Good luck
Devon Lyon February 14th, 2007, 01:14 PM I have a small production company based in Salem, Oregon. We produce work throughout the state and sometimes need extra help/cameras.
We actively work on both paid projects and fun creative work. Anyone in the Salem, Portland, Eugene, Corvallis area in Oregon that might want to meet with us? Thanks!
Alex Sprinkle February 14th, 2007, 04:11 PM Does anyone know where to go online to get local talent? We're shooting a movie in the upcoming months, and we were thinking about trying to have people in it it, too. Thanks.
Barry Gribble February 14th, 2007, 11:02 PM Craigslist.org usually brings out a good number of people. I have had some luck there. In DC there is an actor's mailing list also - might be one in your area too... find some working actors and ask them what they read.
Alex Sprinkle February 14th, 2007, 11:22 PM ok, thanks. I've tried craigslist, but the people I've talked to are kinda scatterbrained so far.
Barry Gregg February 15th, 2007, 12:59 AM Devon;
I'm a little further north, Seattle, but I own my own production company and love to collaborate on projects. I have my own XL H1 and a lot of other gear. I have clients in Albany and Corvallis. Give my site a look. Barry
Barry Gribble February 15th, 2007, 06:49 AM Yeah, that is the downside - it throws a really big net. I have gotten some really high-quality actors that way, but I've also gotten a lot of complete amateurs. I did get a professional dominatrix last time who came out for a role... made a great story at least.
Between Craigslist and the local actors newsletter - I got twice the number from Craigslist, but twice the contenders from the newsletter.
I'd suggest setting up an audition, and asking people to submit a headshot and resume to be selected for a timeslot. That at least puts people on notice that you expect people who are prepared, and then lets you separate the chaff before you have to see them.
Good luck.
Jay C Masters February 15th, 2007, 10:19 AM Hello,
I'm shooting a short and I'm looking for someone with a 35mm adapter to help me with this project. There is no pay for the day yet I will give you a copy of the short and food.
-Look if you love to shoot and be anywhere where a production is taking place send me an e mail I could use the help. It will be fun and the project will have that many more folks at the screening.
Shoot date: Sunday Feb 25
Location: Trenton, NJ
format: DVX 100a 24p (miniDV)
email: jay_zero1@yahoo.com
Alex Sprinkle February 15th, 2007, 12:10 PM That's really good advice. Thanks!
A dominatrix? Yikes!
Bill Ravens February 15th, 2007, 12:17 PM have you considered calling the local SAG union? they usually maintain a list of available actors.
Michael Wisniewski February 15th, 2007, 04:02 PM Looking online can work, but personally I've had much better results, using local acting organizations, theatres, schools, and hang outs.
Devon Lyon February 15th, 2007, 05:27 PM Sounds great. You should call me next time you are down in my neck of the woods. Contact information on Lyonfilms.com. BTW - I know Boquist. Nice spot.
Michael Pulcinella February 16th, 2007, 11:27 AM If anyone is looking for a pleasant, soothing male voice please check out my voiceover demos...

I don't try to do all styles. I don't do characters. If you like my style and would like to work together, please contact me to discuss your project.
Thanks for your time,
Mike
Greg Quinn February 17th, 2007, 02:00 AM have you considered calling the local SAG union? they usually maintain a list of available actors.
Which is good for a union shoot but less than good if it's not, since they aren't going to provide members names for a non-union shoot.
Alex Sprinkle February 17th, 2007, 01:38 PM Union shoot? Oh great, more technicallity
Paul Gale February 19th, 2007, 09:37 AM Due to extreme amount of business, myself and all the other freelancers I normally use are solidly booked for the next few weeks, hence I need someone next week for:
Dates - 28 Feb (tentative) and 1 March
Location - London
Format - DVCAM 16:9 (pref DSR-570 or better) - may consider Digi Beta
Type of Job - Filming in classrooms (Primary) plus interviews of kids plus teachers - some in situ in the classroom and some composed and lit to a high standard
Skills needed - Very good communication skills as you'll be working on your own directly with the client. Very good lighting skills for the IV's. Good experience (many years) generally of IV and general video filming.
Kit needed - full video/IV lighting and sound kit (wireless lapel and on-board shotgun etc)
Both of these jobs are VERY important to me, so only very skilled cameramen need apply. I will also need to see sample IV type work to check lighting abilities etc.
I'm always looking for good cameramen, so if your skills suit, there may be additional work in the future.
If you're interested and have the required skills/kit, please contact me via
camera @ siliconpixel dot com
Many thanks!
Paul.
Colin McAuliffe February 20th, 2007, 01:02 PM I would charge 250-300 for half day labor, plus whatever the rental on the camera is (i think it's usually 250 - 300 for the jvc), plus tape stock, and mileage (42 cents per mile) if the shoot is outside your city limits.
I guess it really depends on what market you are in too, every city has a different going rate. Here in SF a shooters standard day rate is 450-600 plus rental, but every city is different.
Also, there are ALWAYS undercutters and people who will work for lower rates, so be aware of that, but also be aware, if you quote someone a low rate, say 350 a day, then they are always going to want that rate.
Kit Hannah February 20th, 2007, 08:09 PM If you say you have worked for this gentleman before, or others like him, why not just take what you were charging before and tack on another 10-20% for the upgraded gear?
Alden Miller February 20th, 2007, 08:37 PM We will be hiring specific crew positions next month for our film, "Aegis". This is a general announcement to the filmmakers of KC to get a head start for the jobs.
Also, we are looking for these positions immediately:
storyboard artists, Illustrators, set designers and dressers, Hair and Make-up artists, special FX make-up artist, 3D modelers, matte painters, music composers, and musical artists witrh orginial music.
The positions we will be looking for for production are: DPs(x2), Assist Cameraman (x2), Script Supervisor, Gaffer, Grips, Sound Mixer, Boom Operator, Production Assistants, and a Dailies Editor.
If you are interested in helping out, reply to: aegisthemovie@gmail.com

Lisa Bennett February 20th, 2007, 09:32 PM The geographic area does make a difference. I appreciate the input I've received. I haven't done video work for this client before. The way he wants the video done is not really the way I would do it to make it turn out the best. He wants about a day of shooting for his how-to video which is ok but with only one camera while he demonstrates his products.
Anyway, the feedback has been helpful.
Thank you
Lisa

Please email for info.

Probably best not to publish your email address on a public forum but I've sent you a message anyway.
Good luck.
Colin
Colin Willsher February 24th, 2007, 06:47 AM Hi,
Just thought that after all this time I should introduce myself to anyone requiring specially composed music or sound design. To be honest, I wasn't sure it was allowed but clearly it is here :o)
I've written over 200 scores for television in the UK and am keen to progress into film now, having also done a number of documentaries including for National Geographic, Discovery and the BBC. My website (below) has a number of audio examples, along with a full list of credits to date.
I also have a vast library of extremely cost-effective buyout production music which has found it's way onto many broadcast and non-broadcast productions worldwide. Feel free to check it out - I hope it helps you and don't hesitate to get in touch to discuss your project.
Best wishes,
Colin
Alex Diaz February 26th, 2007, 08:23 AM I'm currently a Senior working on my thesis short, attending UArts in Philadelphia. I am in the pre-production stage, looking to go into production Mid-March. I am casting right now, and still securing location and crew. I feel that a strong synergy is necessary between a crew and feel that the final project is only as good as the energy put into it.
Synopsis:
Hidden is an intrusive exploration of the retribution of an immoral practice. Working as a pawn in a risky hidden camera ring, Jeremiah, a high school janitor, finds himself trapped in the center of the ring’s destruction. When a troubled teenage girl catches on will Jeremiah’s days finally be numbered, or does she have plans of her own?
I think that the most frightening effects are made by the viewer's mind, that being said this isn't a movie about hidden cameras, it's about the protagonist's struggle with his morality and sexual impotency.
I plan to be utilizing handheld camerawork to mimic an intrusive feeling of spying on the characters in this piece. Visual styles i am looking for can be seen in the handheld work in half nelson, el' enfant, or keane.
Crew Needed:
Assistant Director
Director of Photography/Camera Opperator
Sound Guy
Boom Pole Opperator
Gaffers/Grips
PA's
Editor
Compensation: Credit, Meals, 2 DVD copies.
I plan to put this on the festival circuit afterwards to help showcase the work of the cast and crew involved.
If interested please email me at fdokfilms@gmail.com
Ari Shomair February 26th, 2007, 08:58 AM I'm helping to produce a short documentary film and need to find a camera operator / HVX owner in the Vancouver area to film an interview for it.
The doc has already been accepted into the NUFF film festival (http://www.nuff.no/), and therefore all film credits are guaranteed to end up on IMDB. To make this deal even sweeter, you will also be paid for your time.
The interview is only a few minutes long, so you're likely looking at 3-4 hours work total.
If you're interested, contact me via PM or email.
Thanks,
Ari

Ramin Matin February 27th, 2007, 03:22 AM Hello writers,
We are a small and fairly new production company based in Istanbul, Turkey. We are currently preparing two feature length documentaries, one funded by the European Union, the other as a coproduction with a French company.
We are looking for interesting feature length screenplays to produce and direct. We are open to all ideas and genres (although we have a particular interest in intelligent and original film noir). However this should be a no/lo budget film as we have limited financial means. Also this film will be doing the festival circuit so only suitable projects please.
We can only shoot in this area of the world so no location specific stories.
Also keep in mind that we have no money to pay for your script until after (and if) we manage to earn any money with the film.
Language is not an issue as we can translate as well as shoot in english if the project calls for it.
You can contact me at ramin@giyotinfilm.com
Thanks.
Jamie Baughman February 27th, 2007, 03:53 PM Hi,
My wife is a musician and is hosting an official SXSW party at this year's festival. I'm going to be there taping the even for a vodcast and am looking for two owner/ops. Here's what I'm looking for:
=========================
- Own a Canon XL-2
- Be comfortable shooting on sticks or handheld (I'll give a detailed shooting assignment prior to the event...if you prefer sticks or handheld, let me know and I'll try and accommodate you.
- Don't mind shooting in a live music environment (a little loud, and people drinking and smoking (can you smoke in bars in Austin?)
- Be comfortable adjusting levels on the camera to compensate for possible lowlight.
- Any ancillary equipment would be great (a cam light, a boom mic, etc)
- Be available 3/16/07 from 2:30 - 6:30 pm.
=========================
I'm able to pay $100 per camera op and you'll be fed and there's free beer that you're welcome to. The 4 hours includes setup and breakdown of your gear.
If you're interested just shoot me an email, or reply to this thread.
Here's a link to the event.

Eden Kelley March 1st, 2007, 11:05 AM William, I run xp home and was wondering about this post:
I run XP Pro on a 32-bit system with 4GB of memory. I use a /PAE switch in the boot.ini file which allows all 4GBs to be recognized and used. However, by going from 2GB to 4GB I only clocked a 10-15% increase in rendering times - not really enough to justify the cost of the memory.
I also run xp and have 4GB of memory but can't use it. How did you do this?
William W. Holcomb March 2nd, 2007, 09:41 AM Do a quick google search and you'll find tons on info on how to use the Physical Address Extension switch (/pae) in XP. You'll have to mod your boot.ini file.
Good luck.

Bill Hamell March 3rd, 2007, 10:06 PM SECT-FILM CASTING
The Southeastern Connecticut Filmmakers organization is
creating a digital database of all on-camera talent in the
CT/RI/MA area.
Everyone is welcome and we encourage new talent to
participate.
Because of the diversity of these projects in size and scope,
there is no specific type, age, or gender that we are looking
for. The productions will be on-going throughout the year and
since we have quite a few projects (short films / commercials /
music videos) on the slate we invite all those that are
interested.
So come on down and spend a few minutes with our team. If
you have a monologue, we would like to record you on camera
along with a dry reading from various scenes that have been
selected by our directors.
If you do not have a monologue, then we would just like a few
minutes to chat and get to know you and what characters you
inspire to play. Along with the video taping, we will also take a
digital photograph of you to keep on file… but if you have a
resume & head shot…please bring it.
The auditions will be held at: 325 State Street. The building
is next to the Garde Art Center at the corners of Meriden &
State street in downtown New London. Right across the
street from Hanafins Pub. If needed, use the directions at
bottom. Please arrive early so you can find suitable parking.
There is no appointment needed… the auditions will be
arranged on first come first serve basis. Please allow 30 – 45
minutes for the audition. We will have two rooms running
simultaneously and each audition will last from 10 – 15
minutes.
The dates and times for the auditions are:
SATURDAY MARCH 10th 11AM – 7PM
SUNDAY MARCH 11th 10AM – 6PM
SATURDAY MARCH 17th 11AM – 7PM
SUNDAY MARCH 18th 10AM – 6PM
Children are invited as well. We recommend for all parents to
aim for the earlier hours.. And again, we would like to meet
with the child and his/her parents for approx. fifteen
minutes.Even if you have no acting experience in front of a
camera, or maybe you've only modeled for a photo shoot,
please stop by. As you know this business is run by
relationships and we would like to meet with as many local
actors as possible.
Thank you for your time. We look forward to meeting you!

What kind of work are you looking for? I (we) have a outdoors show on cable and we are always in the need for a good camera man/woman. We do some :30sec adds as well as our 30 min show. If you would be interested in filming more reality type video drop me a line.
Brian Spatz March 6th, 2007, 11:38 PM Hey Everyone,
I'm looking for someone who could really help me out this Thursday night (3/8) to shoot a theater performance. The show starts at 8pm and should run about 40 minutes.
I need someone who has a Canon XH-A1 (1st camera will be this model,) XH-G1, Sony HVR-Z1U (or like models) maybe with a shotgun mic, and of course sticks, to shoot a second position master shot of a short play. I may consider someone with a 24p Panasonic DVX100, but I'm not sure yet as I would like the project to be shot in high definition.
This is a favor for a friend, so I cannot pay nearly as much as one would be looking for. I'll provide entry, tape stock to shoot on and $50 for your transportation or whatever. Of course, I can also provide you with the footage if you would like to use it for a reel. If this works out maybe we can continue to work together on real projects.
The performance is at a small blackbox in New York City in the 50s between 8th and 9th Aves. Please respond only if you're serious and are available this Thursday night from about 7:30-9pm, you can post here and I will contact you, or e-mail me personally.
Thanks, Brian
Adam Bray March 7th, 2007, 12:33 AM I live in Austin and have an XL2. I don't have a ton of experice with it, but would be willing to help out if you're interested at no charge (free food and beer is fine). Let me know if you're interested.
