Denis Danatzko June 26th, 2007, 07:40 AM ...My employer found out I was doing TV spots on the side and saw it as 'competition' for their stations production. Long and short of it was they demanded I stop, I told them they couldn't control what I did in my free time with my own gear (maybe not the smartest move ever) and they fired me.
What a small-minded, petty, and childish move! The wise thing for them to do would have been simply to move you closer to a job you preferred. Instead they lost the benefit of your experience, and had to "waste" time/money in the hiring and training of your replacement. (I wonder if they manage other aspects of their business so narrow-mindedly. Apparently so, if their clients are willing to move to "the new indie/freelancer in town"). Go get 'em.
If misery loves company, here's my contribution to commiseration: When I first thought I wanted to pursue video work after my own downsizing in the corporate arena, I called a few local indie's out of the blue. With no real experience, one offered to give me work (when he had it) as his assistant. But, the very first words out of his mouth were: "Don't give up your day job." I worked on/off for him for about a year before I started buying equipent. Over time since then, things are picking up, but I still have that part-time day job. I've bought my own equipment, have worked as both 2nd and 1st cam for him, and have even begun to pick up a handful of clients on my own, (and it's taken about 3 years to get to this spot since I first called him, but my confidence level is way up. I've even got a couple of repeat customers).
If someone has the perseverance, resources, patience, and personality, I think they can make a go of it. Just keep your eyes open to every possible opportunity that might come your way, and network, network, network.
Good luck.
Gabe Strong June 26th, 2007, 10:53 AM [QUOTE=Denis Danatzko;702986]What a small-minded, petty, and childish move! Thanks. It wasn't even so much that I preferred commercial production over news, it was just that I needed the extra money as my full time job didn't pay very well. AND to top it off, I regularly told the salespeople at the station when I did a commercial on the side and about 85% of the time the salespeople were able to get 'my client' to buy airtime on our station, making them MORE money. My station just didn't like the fact that the other local stations (a couple of which had no production person) could now tell clients that they could get a commercial (by hiring me). They wanted to continue to have a monopoly on all commercial production. By the way, yes they do manage pretty much all aspects of their business so narrow-mindedly. I would tell them repeatedly that their camera had problems, ask for some lights etc....and always was told to 'just deal with it'. They even denied my 'expense' request to buy a pair of $10 headphones at the local store so I could monitor my audio. And then when the s@*t hit the fan and their camera quit working, they would ask me to use my personal camera and when an interview needed lit they would ask me to use my personal lighting kit. How do you think I was able to buy that stuff?... It sure wasn't from the salary they paid me! But really it was for the best as I like what I am doing now a lot more, and have more free time.
And I couldn't have said it better myself,....perseverance, resources, patience, and personality, and network, network, network. The reason for keeping your day job is because it takes time. If you keep at it, you can make it happen. One thing that I marvel at every day, is that (here in the US anyways) you can actually make your own job!! It's pretty neat when you think about it. One other piece of advice.....don't be pressured into setting your rates to low!! I know, it's hard when you are trying to get that first job, but once you do a job for low rates, the word goes out, and other customers expect that same rate! And when good paying work comes to town, customers look for the guys that charge more because the perception is that they are the ones that do good work....you are the one to go to when there is no budget.
Mark Bournes June 26th, 2007, 11:25 AM Bob, to answer your question, try and get a job with a local production company. Local TV news stations, in my opinion are not the way to go. Very LOW pay, horrible hours, lack of respect, the list goes on. I speak from 10 years of experience in local tv news. Tv news is great if you want to learn how to run and gun. If you want to do quality television go into some sort of production. Don't get me wrong there are a lot of good shooters in tv news, mostly in Denver, Minneapolis, Louisville, N.P.P.A shops. However those are few and far between, and those guys are the best in the business and have a lot of experience. Getting to those markets takes years and a very good reel, trust me I used to be a N.P.P.A regional judge.
If your just starting out it's tough as it is to afford gear, get clients, market yourself and so on. My advice is this, try and get a full time production job and "freelance" on your time off. Save that $$$ and buy your own equipment. Remember this takes time, but be patient, draw up a plan and you'll be fine. Good luck.
Bob Bitteroot June 27th, 2007, 09:16 AM Thanks to all who've responded. It's always great to hear personal stories from people here. Reading some of the stories about the low pay, terrible hours, bad management, no funding for equipment, lack of respect, etc. in the TV news biz reminded me of why I got out of it in the first place! :) I dealt with some of the same things you were talking about and couldn't stand this aspect of "the biz."
Thanks for making me remember this. I definitely will not start again in TV news. Sounds like the way to go is to keep my day job and set out on my own. I do have my own gear (albeit limited right now) and have produced a few short videos for fun for various people. I guess the next step is to make a plan to start charging people for them.
Gabe, you mentioned not to start charging too low. This is good advice, but how does one justify charging someone "more" when they are just starting off freelancing and don't have much of a background or contact list locally? Thanks!
Marc Salvatore June 27th, 2007, 01:14 PM Does anyone have a lead for a reasonably priced make-up artist in the Portland area? I just need light make in the mornings for a 4 person panel discussion (3 men, 1 woman).
Thanks!
Marc Salvatore June 27th, 2007, 08:25 PM found someone, thanks
Denis Danatzko June 27th, 2007, 09:32 PM Gabe, you mentioned not to start charging too low. This is good advice, but how does one justify charging someone "more" when they are just starting off freelancing and don't have much of a background or contact list locally? Thanks!
How does one get a job if they have no experience, and how does one get experience wituout a job?
The typical advice is to volunteer, donate your time, etc. While I was lucky enough to have someone "take me under their wing" to learn while getting paid as an assistant, I realize situations like that may be few and far between. Unfortunately, I have neither a solution to the dilema, nor alternative to the advice.
FWIW, though, I heeded the advice and it did work for me, though not overnite. My first "job" was supposed to be a freebie for a non-profit funded almost entirely by private $$. They asked my mentor to do it, who in turn suggested I might be interested. I took the job, expecting no payment, but maybe a few bucks from selling DVDs. It turned out that the "client" burned copies of the DVDs themselves, so no money there, but they liked my work so much that they "gifted" me about 5 times more than I thought I might make from selling the DVDs.
With my courage bolstered, I started networking just a little more aggressively, and after my most recent job behind the camera with a different experienced producer, he told me I was good enough that I should be charging more than I am, and I'm already charging the same rate as my mentor. (I haven't been paid for that job yet, but the compliment was very welcome). Moral of the story: good things can come from unexpected places, if you're willing to look in new places.
Good luck.
Gabe Strong June 28th, 2007, 11:50 AM Ah yes....this is the 50 thousand dollar question. I can only tell you what worked for me...your milage may vary.
I decided to build a reel, to try to promote the services I could offer. That way, I wouldn't have to work for free. I had kept a bunch of tapes of news stories I had done. I also 'created my own stuff'....by which I mean, I had a PD-150 and Final Cut Pro, I went out and shot a few things (community events, sporting events, things like that), made 'fake' commercials, made some motion graphics and such, and put together a reel with that. So in a way, I was working for free....but the client was MYSELF. I just feel that working for others for free or at a reduced rate tends to get you 'typecast' at a certain rate, as the cheap guy. I'd rather spend my time building up a reel than taking cut rate jobs or freebies. Believe me, I've been turned down by more clients than you can think of because I won't lower my rates. It gets discouraging sometimes. But I can tell you from sad experience, if you ever decide to accept one of these 'jobs' you will find out that in a strange sort of wormhole, the clients who want to pay the least, usually want the most! They will want revisions, reshoots, all kinds of stuff. I decided it wasn't worth my time. Now if you quote them a high price, they accept it, the shoot goes really easy and you feel like it's too much, you can always invoice them less then the quote. Think you look good then? But when you try to charge more.....they throw a fit.
Also, when I started, I was bringing business cards around....stopped in at the local cable company. Their salesperson wanted to meet me. She said they had just got rid of their production arm, and wanted to hand out my cards, because if she sold 'airtime' she needed someone to refer the client to to actually MAKE the spot. Also, right after I started, a guy who was a former attorney general of the state, decided to run for mayor of the town I live in. I had interviewed him about 100 times with a reporter when I worked for the local news station. Somehow he heard that I was doing local production, and since he had seen me with a camera so many times, he told his campaign people to hire me, since he figured I knew what I was doing. So I got lucky and got a spot right away....within a week or so. He ended up winning the election, which helped my reputation as well. Kind of a win for everyone. So maybe the moral is.......it's better to be lucky than to be good! Or maybe it could also be....keep the contacts you made as a news shooter....they can really come back to help you!

Mark Utley June 29th, 2007, 01:39 AM I'm doing a 3-camera concert shoot in Calgary on Saturday, June 30 out of my own pocket. We're using my Sony Z1 and renting two more from work. I'm also renting a Sound Devices 744t so we can run a pair of room mics and stereo board feed into it. Absolutely everyone I normally work with is busy this weekend so I'm kind of desperate for someone to work sound. It's very basic - just helping a bit with setup and making sure the levels in the recorder are okay.
I'm not normally one to ask people to work for free but I'm not making money from this and can't afford to pay normal rates. I'll pay for supper and buy a few drinks after, but that's the best I can do.
If you're into independent music, the band is Les Savy Fav and they put on a pretty crazy show - definitely worth checking out!
If you or anyone you know would be interested, please contact me asap!

Matthew Nayman June 29th, 2007, 10:51 AM I have a fairly big job coming up, and I will be shooting with my Canon XHA1. Unfortunately, this job requires multiple cameras, and I am having a really hard time finding A1's or G1's (or H1's)for Rent. Vistek is all booked for that weekends (July 6th) so I am offering $250 cash for a one day rental of your XHA1 (or G1) They will be used by professional camera op's who are compelteley familiar with the camera, and your camera will be fully insured against damage incurred while on loan (if not covered by warrenty, eg. dead pixel). This could also lead to future work with our company (www.notomatofilms.com) as we are often looking for talented operators with their own systems.
If you are interested in making some fast, easy money ($250 for no work isn't bad), contact me via PM here, or respond to this thread. We'll exchange numbers and we can meet in person so you can establish I am not a theif who wishes to abscond with your Camera :)
Thanks in advance.

Jon Palmer July 13th, 2007, 04:48 AM Hi everyone!
I'm planning a feature film to begin shooting sometime at the end of this year, and unfortunately my D.O.P has had to pull out due to travel arrangements.
So I'm putting out a call for D.O.P's in Perth Western Australia!
Unfortunately due to budget constraints (aint it always the way? Most of it's gone on equipment) the job is unpaid, but it's going to be a large, professionally run project that would be great for getting names out there!
Some of the equipment you'll get to play with include a Canon XL2 camera and a Redrock M2 adaptor, as well as some Nikkon SLR len's.
The film itself is a look at both how relationships can be taken for granted and how rifts can occur between generations, set against the backdrop of an alternate current - day, where two political powers are engaged in a kind of 'cold war' (think the Berlin Wall).
I already have the makings of a great crew including two concept/storyboard artists, an acting coach, a music composer and several highly talented oung actors/actresses -all of whom are young names trying to get their work seen.
All I'm missing is a good D.O.P :)
I know it sounds pretty pathetic trying to find someone with these skills with nothing to offer but a credit, but there'll be no better chance for someone in Western Australia to have a crack at a project this size, and what can I say - you gotta start somewhere.
If you're interested or have any questions whatsover, please reply.
Cheers
Jon Palmer
David Perrine July 13th, 2007, 01:06 PM Hi!
Well, At the risk of being added to the looong list of cheesy requests for unpaid talent, here is mine, LOL!
Current Status:
On occasional weekends and possibly some weekdays during the fall/winter of 2007/08 I am going to shoot a feature length mini-DV format movie with XL1 cameras. I already have 1 camera as well as minimal audio equipment. I have three musical groups lined up for the soundtrack: Freezepop, Leslie Fish and (probably) Yachay. We have been trying to contact Rasputina and The Arrogant Worms for additional tracks but have gotten no reply yet. I will be directing, producing, building props, running one of the cameras Etc, Etc.
What We Need:
A good DP with his own XL-1 and/or just a second cameraman with an xl-1
A good sound person who has a decent portable recorder.
A secondary hair/Makeup person.
A lighting person. We also need lighting equipment.
We could use prop builders, a boom operator, prop handlers, and all the other folks that make a production run smoothly.
We have most crew positions still open and everyone involved will probably be wearing multiple hats.
We need lots of props and costumes, but may be able to borrow some of those from the local SCA group which may also provide some of the extras.
We are short several key actors and many smaller parts.
Missing Key Roles:
-Male Nerd/Gamer character: Strong acting and comedic skills required. Age range: should look like Teens to Twenties, skinny to average build. This is a major role and Dependability and ongoing availability are a must!
Objective
To produce a niche film appealing to nerds, fans of swords and sorcery films and people fed up with daily life, specifically "office-space" type working conditions.
If we succeed in creating a good finished product, we will pursue multiple avenues to turn that into cash, such as pitching it as a TV pilot, going direct to video, selling copies at Science-Fiction conventions, or whatever we can think of
What We Are Offering:
Screen credit.
1 meal or snack per shooting session. (Usually)
2 (DVD+R) copies of the film. And an additional 2 (Regular DVD) copies if it is released commercially.
Main actors and Key crew will receive from 1/2% to 1% of revenue from the film itself.
Minor actors and non-vital crew will not receive financial compensation unless the film earns us over 50,000 US dollars, in which case they will each receive a 100$ payment.
Any crew members not already appearing on screen will be given small walk-through parts if they wish to appear on screen. (Peasant#6, Guard#12, etc.) It is nice to be able to point to yourself on screen and say "there I am!"
Please note, this is essentially an unpaid amateur production and you will be working with a first time director. There will probably be some false starts and duplication of efforts. Patience with the process and with your fellow actors will be essential!

Project Website: WWW.OFFICEQUESTMOVIE.COM
Thanks for considering supporting our project!

Salil Sundresh July 13th, 2007, 10:38 PM Looking for a composer that can score my short film. The only compenstation I can offer is credit + copy. Derrick A.Jones July 14th, 2007, 06:37 AM Hi. I am looking for some work to do with anyone in this area. It doesn't have to pay out a lot of money or anything. If anyone have any questions please shoot me an Email
Jon Palmer July 14th, 2007, 07:10 AM Hi guys, thanks for the replies (from Texas to boot!)
The project is scheduled to start at the end of August and will go through til around January/February of next year - but this mainly depends on cast and crews availabilities.
To reitirate, the job is unpaid (I did mention it but you may have missed it) - as a result I'm afriad I can't help anyone out with travel or visa's (ain't it always the way?)
If you are still interested please let me know and I can e-mail you all the details you want - including an almost-final copy of the script if need be.
Cheers once again - Jon

(and for those who might remember me, I still have that XL1 that I bought off the classified boards on DvInfo.net a half-decade ago . . . yeeeehaw!)

Dale Stoltzfus July 18th, 2007, 02:39 PM Are you looking for volunteer or paid work? Just asking because I know a great composer who might be interested in working for your project, but he wouldn't work for free.
EDIT:
Wow; never mind! I don't know how I missed that in your post!
Kyle "Doc" Mitchell July 19th, 2007, 07:16 AM Indeed, this is a salaried w/ benefits, full-time position in the studio.
Travis Johnson July 19th, 2007, 08:30 PM I am shooting a short crime drama that will be taking place at a local bar. My former lighting guy bailed on us at the last minute and we are having to re-schedule. We were hoping to shoot this Sunday but I would not want to rush someone into this project. We are probably going to be aiming for the end of August to shoot again.
Btw I need you to provide your own lighting kit and keep in mind that this is a ultra-low to no-budget film so you will not be getting paid. You will receive credit and a copy of the film.

Jun Tang July 21st, 2007, 01:15 PM I'm looking for a talented DP to build a working relationship. I'm pursuing a career directing commercials. I've shot two so far. You can check it out at www.tangfilms.com.
My learning experience from my first two spec is to shoot HD and to collaborate with a creative DP. The camera of choice is HVX200/M2 adapter.
There is pay, although it won't be much.

Vishal Gurung July 22nd, 2007, 08:17 AM Hello all once again..
We are in the midst of pre production on a short film and as per Murphy's law, our main location pulled out on us at the last minute. We HAD been planning to shoot July 28th/29'th but now we are looking at August 4th/5th.
On the offchance that there are tons of vancouverites browsing these boards, i'm making a plea to anyone in the lower mainland (burnaby/vancouver/downtown) who has or know of an apartment (seedy can be good too) who would let us shoot at the above dates.
If you could shoot me an email vgurung@shaw.ca we'd mucho appreciate it.
Thanks!
Vishal
Paul Ramsbottom July 22nd, 2007, 03:39 PM I am seeking a creative collaborator (or a small group of people) to create an original score for a short film project. Ideally I am looking for local people in the San Francisco / Bay Area.
This film is a high definition video project that I have been filming in SE Asia since 2002. The working title "16x9" reflects the sixteen or so South East Asian nations that I have visited during nine trips over the last 5 years.
This is the first time I have presented any of my work or sought the assistance of others. My ambitions for this project are very modest; perhaps to create something worthy of entry in a few minor film festivals.
This is a no-budget production, and I am not soliciting paid help. This might be suitable as a student film project or for someone with a keen interest in this genre of films, looking for a first project to become part of.
In return, I can offer you full participation in this project, and broad creative control and credit. I’m seeking an artistic partner, not just someone to score my visual ideas.
I’d like to find someone who is used to working with Apple Macs, OS X, Final Cut Pro Studio, & Soundtrack Pro. I can provide you with this equipment if you do not have your own. I will probably consider gifting this equipment and software at the end of the project, providing the collaboration is a successful one.
I have edited this short eight minute ‘proof of concept’ in order to show some of my footage and a few of the ideas I have about this as a finished piece:
http://web.mac.com/pramsbottom/iWeb/Site/16x9.html
Large 316MB h.264 file, please view with a broadband connection and the latest version of Apple’s Quicktime. It's been hinted for web streaming but unless you have a very fast connection, you'll probably want to let it download for a while. I can also provide it on DVD.
This has not been color graded, and the sequence and narrative is not exactly what I foresee for the finished project. However the non-verbal style and split-screen motif will be central to the finished film (although I am planning on a greater proportion of full frame imagery).
The basic objective is to illustrate the range of religious, cultural and economic diversity in South East Asia during the first decade of the 21st century.
This will be supplemented with existing footage from China, Mongolia and Thailand, plus new high quality XDCAM 24p material shot in China, Tibet, the Philippines, Brunei and Cambodia during the next 6 months.
I am hoping this will be a fun and productive collaboration. I’m a really flexible individual and definitely don’t have a film-makers ego. I’m looking forward to hearing from you.
Final note, the clips above includes scenes shot in Burma during April 2006 but I do not advocate tourist travel to this country, and regret my decision to visit there.
Best,
Paul.

Jad Meouchy July 26th, 2007, 03:30 PM As the subject suggests, I am a writer/producer with an HD workflow interested in networking with actors (or other writers) in the DC Metro area, specifically the VA side of it. I have several scripts in progress and am looking to write specific actors into the roles. If we flip the shorts quickly, we can prepare to market for the upcoming festival circuit.
These are not paid gigs; they are more for experimenting with new techniques, building portfolios, networking, and having fun. I understand that I am asking for free labor, but I would prefer to work on the same level as the talent and cater to their strengths, creating a mutually beneficial situation. My small group of motivated individuals is ready to take our first steps, so let me know if you're interested in walking along.
Richard Rock July 27th, 2007, 08:06 AM Hey Gary. When is this taking place? I'm assuming this is going to be at the Hagerstown cinema. Is Thomas not making it out for this one?

Jacob Ehrichs July 28th, 2007, 11:35 PM If feels like months since I've last been here keeping up on the latest and greatest improvements. Now here I am needing assistance from the pros.
I'm getting married 15 March 2008 and need to find a videographer in the Cincinnati area. Location is actually Fairfield, between Cincy and Hamilton.
We're interested in a 2 camera shoot of the wedding and possibly only a 1 camera at the reception but 2 is also possible.
One thing I think we have going is that I've shot a few weddings and I feel the pain of what we go through so I'll be doing all that I can to make the videographer's job as pain free as possible.
Please send me an email with anything you may need from me as far as additional info, and a link to your site if you have one, as well as a package outline/pricing.
I appreciate everyone's help and look forward to working with and meeting a fellow DVIer.

Which film festival has a category for Best Zombie Movie?
Seriously, I gotta know... :)
BTW, as a long time fan of zombie cinema, I have to point out that a similar film was already made in the 80's under the title "Demons". A group of young adults is trapped in a movie theater by zombie type demons. It's awesome. Samurai swords and dirtbikes... Bliss.... It was French or German, can't remember which.
EDIT: Here ya go! The daddy of "I'm trapped in a movie theater by living dead!" (not to be confused with Night Of The Comet where a comet turns the world into mutants while only the people hidden in a movie theater survive)

I love IMDB
Gary Franks August 1st, 2007, 02:47 PM Hey Gary. When is this taking place? I'm assuming this is going to be at the Hagerstown cinema. Is Thomas not making it out for this one?
Hey Rick,
yeah this will be at the cinema in H-town. Nope, Thomas will not be pulling cinematographer duties. I asked I haven't heard back from him... so i moved on and found another DP for the project.

Fright Night Film Fest Louisville, Ky.
as far as Demons vs. Night of the Comet. Demons monsters were more possessed by evil spirits, and Night of the Comet, well that only started off in a movie theater for 15 minutes the rest of the film was in the greater Los Angeles area. Also Demons was started from someone putting on a mask... neither plot device will be used for this film other than the movie theater setting, but each film was a single screen theater, I am using a multiplex.
