Sony's AVCHD cams announced

http://www.sony.jp/products/Consumer...DUCTS/HDR-SR1/

AVCHD is H.264 based agreed by Sony and Panasonic.

The ones by Sony seems to be only connected via USB.

I don't understand why they don't use HDV as the recording spec......why introduce a new spec when we're just getting our NLE's to edit HDV!!!!

Soon their will be too many HD variants and incompatibilties across the board- NLE's will need constant updating to keep up with ever changind HD variants......I wish they would have followed DV and used it upscaled instead of the mpeg-2/4 variations.........

...Apple users will have the most problems as PC's account for far many users although Apple users are more prone to try video editing as their machines are touted for such purposes....

...technology presses on although in too many directions for mass adoption!

We can only speculate what the manufacturers are thinking, but using AVC allows them to fit more recording time on non-tape media like DVDs and flash memory.

HDV by definition is a tape-based format (meaning, an HDV device can only be called HDV if it has a tape transport mechanism). AVCHD is a format designed to record to one of three tapeless mechanisms; those being either flash memory (SD card), three-inch DVD, or hard drive.

I will go to Sony Plaza

like how I did with FX1.

It looks like Sony will have a handson seminar at Sony Plaza in August with UX1.

can somebody CONFIRM? no 24p this time???

Just want to know - definitely 60i at this point? Or any "p" as in 720 or... egads... 1080 24p - guess not, eh? Like, they would have touted it bigtime with the official news release...

dang!

Kaku

There is a bit of debate about the actual data rate these recorders are using over here:

http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=71876

About the meaning of the Japanese text next to VBR in this spec page:

http://www.sony.jp/products/Consumer...-SR1/spec.html

It seems to be saying that 15mb/s is only the average, not the top bit rate. I am very eager to clarify which it is, because we could virtually order camera after first review, if it is only the average and not the max? If you could come over there and help use that would be good.

Thanks

Wayne.

From the spec. describes,

High Vision (HD) Quality
Approx. 15Mbps@XP mode, Approx. 9Mbps@HQ mode, Approx. 7Mbps@SP mode, and Approx. 5Mbps@LP mode.

Standard Quality
Approx. 9Mbps@HQ mode, Approx. 6Mbps@SP mode, and Approx. 3Mbps@LP mode.

All is Variable bit rate. Doesn't say much about the top rate.

And for Mark's questions, it is basically 1080/60i.

Also, it has the same memory record function as HC3, 3 seconds of 240field/sec. capturing recorded as 12 seconds of 60field/sec (overcrank).

Also, records sound in surround with extra microphone.

Kaku, thanks. Does the wording beside VBR, indicate that 15mb/s is an average figure, or does it just indicate that VRB is averaging?

Look forward to seeing your review ;).

The word in front of the numbers (yaku in japanese) mean approximately.

Kaku, thank you very much for this, it is what i expected, does not really indicate that it is an average value.

What do you mean, to compare to this? I'm looking into the new Canon and JVC. I think Canon would be more versatile. For SR1, I'm looking into this because of a solution for schools to adapt whole media creation education.
