HV20: Are You Smarter Than a 3 Yr Old? (autofocus sample)

Howdy folks.

I know this isn't High Def footage being on YouTube and all, but it does demo the HV20s autofocus ability.

LOL dude. That hurt m eyes. I believe it was instant auto focus, but I'll fire up the camera later and verify. I haven't changed it since I shot the footage.

I also post my videos on http://virb.com/dewde. Virb has better resolution than YouTube but probably not as good as Vimeo. Microsoft has a new technology called Silverlight that supposedly competes with Flash in several areas... one of them being high def video streaming. I've seen some impressive demos but to date I havent seen any companies build a video sharing site on the technology platform.

In any event, video sharing is here to stay. And that's good for you and me!

Vimeo here I come.

I took the Vimeo plunge. Here are 3 different hosted versions of the same file.

Cool thing about Vimeo is you can download the original?. Nice.

Cool thing about Virb is that it renders text better. Pay attention especially during the "white text on pink" scenes in between video.

This truly is amazing!

It's like that human beat box video on youtube... but much less annoying :p

HV30 Footage of Brazilian Dancers in Haifa

Here's some shots from the Purim Festival on 21 Mar 2008 in Haifa. The colours from this little cam still amaze me, but I just wish it I had been able to get a ND filter before I came here.

Nice work, Richard. As an new HV30 user, can I ask you what settings - mode, image effect etc - you used for this?
Practising in bright sunshine today on the HV30, I was missing the built in ND filter on my XH-A1, and sunshine here in March ain't nuffin' compared to Haifa.

Richard Hunter March 21st, 2008 11:47 PM

Hi Colin, thanks. Yes I've got an XH-A1 as well, but it was a bit bulky to bring along this trip.

For these HV30 shots, I used 25P, Tv mode and tried to use 1/50s shutter. However it was a very bright day and since I do not have any ND filter, for a lot of the shots I had to set the shutter to 1/250s. I also think that Tv mode tends to overexpose most of the time, so I usually hit the exposure lock and drop the exposure by 2 or 3, until only the brightest parts are showing 100% zebra. Sounds troublesome, but it's quite fast once you get used to it.

Richard

Colin McDonald March 22nd, 2008 02:05 AM

Thanks for that info Richard.
It's great that the HV30 has the zebra function but I wish it had something in between 70 and 100%. Maybe you have shown me a way round that.

Richard Hunter March 22nd, 2008 08:15 AM

Hi Colin. Sorry I gave wrong info about the camera mode. This footage is actually 50i, because there was a lot of other stuff going on at that festival and I am planning to apply slomo to some of it. The rest of what I said is correct though.

Prophet Elias

This is from another shooting for the doc I am doing. I took some B-Rolls with HV20 but they look even better sometimes than what operator took with Z1.

Here's some footage. I'm still struggling with compression to be able to upload 720p on vimeo.com. Everything looks way too dark and lacking detail...I really wish there was a way to upload a full quality 1080. This way you would really be able to see how amazing it looks.

Here's the link: http://www.vimeo.com/839879

I wish I could have spent more time in Rome and I also wish I had a tripod with me.

HV30 in Haifa

Some city shots in Haifa, without any colour correction so you can appreciate the image out of this great little camera.
