I've always thought it would be a big seller. It probably won't happen now. It will have to be HDV/DV.

Speaking about the XLR inputs....is there a discernible difference in the audio quality between cams with built-in XLR or those using adapters?
|
in terms of actual audio quality, I'd say no, but they usually sound better because they are less balanced which makes them less prone to interference from lights and stuff and they can also use phantom power which makes things a lot simpler.
|
So Andrew, which adapters would you recommend? Isn't this option cheaper than the high markup prices we see in the pro version cameras with built-in XLRs?
|
In all honesty, I haven't had very much experience with XLR adapters. Where I do most of my video work, we had an XL1 up until last year where we ended up getting an XL2, and since then, I've used the XL2 for most of the work. We often record audio completely seperate from the cameras then add it in post. As long as the cable going from the adapter to the camera is short, I don't see a reason why the quality would degrade. I have heard about issues dealing with phantom power since many of the adapers offer it, but don't actually give a full 48 volts of power, which means the mic operates at a lower level, introducing more noise. Other than that, from what I've heard around the board, Beachtech (did I spell it correctly?) makes some very good adapters. Depending on the camera you're using, you can get the adapter with a 1/8 inch (regular headphone size) output or dual RCA which I think is preferrable because it's more robust and the signals are fully seperate. In the end though, I think any cameras coming out for our section of the market will include XLR inputs as standard, since many new cameras already have them, and like I said, they're a lot better than the alternatives.

With hdv 1080i 24f and 20x zoom in gl2 form factor for 3500 street price they'd move units faster than they could put them on the shelves....

Am I bovvered? Am I?

We wont see it for what would be the exchange rate - £1750-ish. If it got here for something UNDER 2k, then it WOULD fly. But then that would place it ONLY £600 over the now exsisting XM2 - yeah? Am I bovvered? Am I? Am I bovvered? Am I? Look at my face? Grazie |

Am I bovvered? Am I? Am I bovvered? Am I? Look at my face? /QUOTE] This might need translating for a largely N American audience! It's a reference to a wonderful surly teenage character created by English comic Catherine Tate. |
