I shot in 24P, did not do any post production. Once I finished editing I made an avi out of it using Premiere and then uploaded to Vimeo. I must be doing something wrong. :(

Note: There is no interlacing problems when I burn to DVD.

Beautiful colors in the shots. The smokys are one of my favorite vacation spots. To bad I didnt have a decent cam when I was at the Clingmans Dome videotaping a bear breaking into a car. The video is on youtube if you want to see it.

A1 & HV30 set-up panalook2 preset

Alan Barcus playing his song "Last of the Cowbows" on Vimeo
I videotaped this show in a small theater where there wasn't much lighting change.
I used the panalook2 preset to try to match the two cams. My wife ran the HV30 from the balcany, pritty much in auto mode, 30F. I darkened the HV30 in post. To bad she didn't take the exposure down a little and zoom in more. I added some digital zoom for emotion.
Comments on the video appreciated.
Thanks,
Rich

Pretty well done! The two cams mixed well.

In my opinion, the balconny angle isn't a good idea. It would have been better if you put the HV30 at stage level on the opposite angle. Maybe it wasn't possible in this theater.

But overall, it's very good. I shot a lot of live concert myself and I know how it can be challenging.

Did you got the sound feed from the audio board?

Rich Woodrick December 5th, 2008 11:26 AM

I agree with the camara angle. If I get another chance at recording at this theater I will try to get stage level. Yes i got an input from the sound board and mixed in my NTG-2 using the other XLR jack on the A1. I made my first surround sound DVD using the sound boards input for the front speakers and the NTG-2 in the rear speakers. It sounds good..

The sound is really good. Nice trick with the XLR inputs.

New promo for upcoming documentary

I shot this Thursday night in one of the smallest rooms I've ever had to shoot in... Couldn't even get a backlight behind him, had to come from the side in a doorway.

This is the same documentary I posted the other promo for a week ago:

Spotlight Mode - Puppet Stage Production

As nervous as it made me, I decided to give a try to using the "Spotlight Mode" of the XH-A1 to see how it would handle a stage production featuring brightly-lit puppets against a dim symphony orchestra. This was shot simply sitting in a seat with my tripod.

Scenes from Petrushka on Vimeo

It struggled a bit with the fact that two of the puppet subjects were nearly white and the third was very dark/black. Any tips on further optimizing the Spotlight Mode for future shoots like this?

i love the shots stephen nice lil lighting look you got going there..

keep up the good work!

John Stakes December 8th, 2008 12:55 PM

Do as many tests as you want Steve! I love seeing other people's footage because it alows me to see exactly what the XHA1 is capable of. I used to be very dissapointed with my footage, but by watching others, and experimenting on my own, I learn more and more. I shoot everything with the VIVIDRGB preset, but I was playing around with the Vision presets last week, and I will be shooting a little footage with them shortly...looks "filmlike" (ugh I can't stand that term)

I'm sorry that I cant add tips for you, but why are the people controlling the puppets using such reflective clothes? If they used more of a matte fabric they would be less distracting.

Pileated woodpecker - video

Hello All,

For those of you who have not seen a Pileated woodpecker up close, and anyone else interested.

Attached is a link to a short (1 1/2 minute) video I did with the A-1 of a male Pileated woodpecker.

Pileated Woodpecker feeding on Vimeo

The bird was about 10 feet outside my den window. The camera is on full telephoto.

Take care all.

Mark Williams December 10th, 2008 09:30 AM

Hi Roger,

Nice clip. They are really common in North Georgia, but I have never seen one at a feeder which is behavior that I found very interesting. I always thought them to be kind of prehistoric looking creatures.
