Using XL2 to record from Video casette?

I have been looking, with no success, to find out if I can do this. I was told I can, but can't figure out how.

What I was told, is that I can plug my standard video player into the video in rca plugs on my XL2, then capture the footage from video player, via XL2, onto my computer.

Is this true, and if yes how do I do it? My camera doesn't seem to recognise that it is even connected to the video player.

Sorry to be a pain, but I figured out my own problem. My Video player outputs are dodgey.
