Oleg -
That is Beautiful!

(obviously you are not just using the viewfinder to focus:)

Oleg Kalyan March 3rd, 2008 04:57 PM

John, Thank You!
To be honest, I only used a stock viewfinder...

I have to admit that when there is less to focus on, like with 100mm macro lens, it's in a way easier to focus, just going between "no focus" points, however if the goal is to pull the focus to a moving object, or a different spot it may become a problem, a HiDef monitor is a must!

Regards, Oleg.

Very nice, Oleg.

By the way, I have been using your "Oleg Warm" preset for two years. It is my favorite preset for warm, saturated tones.

Thanks for sharing.

Low budget but not low quality :) I thought it was great, very creative, nice color. Did you use a adapter to get the small DOF or did you zoom in? Thought that low shot when those guys came in the door was great, also the one were they were leaning against eachother and moved sideways to expose the light spot.

Did you use a lot of extra light to film this? How many people were involved shooting this?

Oleg Kalyan May 16th, 2008 04:07 PM

Patrick and Noa, I really appreciate your comments!

I had two sources of light, one was HMI 5600K joker bug 800 wt, another Fosqi, similar to Kinoflo, (it's in the shot) you can see it breefly, I used mini35mm adapter, I had an assistant and 1 grip guy, so three of us did it all.
It took I'd say 4 hours to get all the shots done, I have not seen the place before the shoot, so it took some trial and error to move the lights around and get best exposure, still I think lighting could've been better, but the client is really happy it turned out, it
actually was transferred to 35 mm film to show it in local cinema! I look forward to watch it in the theater!

Trailer to my short film up

I have a trailer to a short film I shot with the XLH1, that I am working on at
http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=...rneProductions. ("Seventeen Golden Summers") I edited with Final Cut Pro and Color.

...I also have another clip there that I did the day I got my canon, called "Jackie and Jake". (Big difference since I didn't know what I was doing yet!)

Lovely shots, as we have come to expect from you! I think you could actually have done with more DOF in the close ups - there's quite a lot of footage that just looks out of focus to me. I know that's the point of the 35mm optics and it works well in the mid shots, but the DOF is so narrow in the close ups that I would say it's a problem in places.

By the way, this is a double post and you are very naughty (wags finger).

Oleg Kalyan July 1st, 2008 12:07 AM

Colin, thank you.

I have done the shots with lowest possible DOF on purpose, also consider that everything was shot with available light, in some shots I could close down F/T stop,
the idea was if something significant in focus it's good, to isolate what can be seen in shot to make it more significant.

"By the way, this is a double post and you are very naughty (wags finger)" ???

Do you mean that I also post it in show work thread?

It just seems to me that towards the beginning there are a few moments when NONE of the frame is in focus. For instance, the fourth shot (the baby from over the shoulder of his mother at 00:13:00). Maybe it's deliberate and I am missing the point? I could understand an overall soft focus effect being appropriate to this content but I am having difficulty with only the ends of toes and very small sections of faces being featured :-)

Sorry to be so negative here - I am a great fan of your work as you know.

Sorry, perhaps I should have said "cross post" - I thought we were not allowed to post the same message to 2 different forums.

Oleg Kalyan July 1st, 2008 01:27 AM

Colin, thanks again,
I see what you mean, yes I am aware that for a moment during transition complete shot may be out of focus, that's the idea, instead of using soft FX transition, I used original footage for that purpose.

Didn't know that not allowed to cross post, will delete, or moderator please do so in show my work section.

It looks very relaxing, great choice of music, nice.
I recalled reading that most of British rock stars live in that area, is it true?
