Illustrator to After Effects

Ok, I have an odd request. I've just opened up AI for the first time today (it's a prebuilt file for me). I have a political map of the world all in shades of gray. Through the course of a video, as we cut back to it, we want to highlight different sections. I have about 20 files, all with different areas highlighted. And I could just fade the other ones in as we bring a lot of them into the video. The only problem with that, though, is I'm building this flat image ito a "3d" model in AE. Is there a way to just add color to different sections of the map (now a globe), as it turns?

*Solved / Bypassed*

New problem:
I'm importing a vector image of a map of the world. I need to be able to zoom into parts. I've used CC Sphere to turn it into a globe. As I zoom in, it doesn't hold it's vector look, and gets fuzzy. Ideas?

Yeah, it doesn't do anything. All vector imaging is lost with CC sphere
