I don't think Editshare have gone beyond stating they were going to take Lightworks to open source. The current position as stated on the Lightworks website is:

"Once the Linux and Mac versions are released the source code of Lightworks will become available. We cannot give a date when this will happen, but announcements and updates will be regularly posted on the Lightworks Forum."

This has been the road map for a number of years, unfortunately, the Internet rumour mill has been saying that it's open source, when it's not, it's currently a commercial NLE. Looking at how things worked out, it seems that the demands from actual users in the early days drove it into becoming a cross platform NLE. rather than straight into open source. Although, a number of people from the open source community have been and some continue to be active on the Lightworks forum,

How the open source Lightworks organization works remains to be seen, there are a number of ways it can be structured. To date, Editshare have generally done what they said they would do, there has been some conflict over the Free version because new users were having problems with the transcoding imports etc, through third party software like Eyeframe, so they allowed Lightworks Free to import the commercial codecs. However, the downside was a limitation to the exports, because Editshare has to pay for the licenses.

I wouldn't expect Lightworks to go open source before 2015, perhaps even 2016. Editshare could be said to be guilty of being overly optimistic in their time frames, they're not unique in that, a number of well known products have fallen foul of that.

The Lightworks developers are open to suggestions and even some that received a negative reaction from some users in the Forum have been put into the program. The Lightworks UI has been described as pretty loosey goosey by one user, so you've got options as to how you arrange things, however, it does have tracks on its timeline.

The next public beta is now available: New Lightworks Version 12.0.b on Mac OS X Now Available as Public Beta

There are a number of fixes and also features added to the new content manager to increase the options on how you can use the groups and the bins.

11.5.2.c is now available. Apart from the maintenance updates, there's support for some of the new FX work scheduled for version 12. This will allow users to step back from version 12 to 11.5 successfully.

There has been a number of fixes and the following have been added: ability to duplicate existing effects from the effects settings panel, a 'Reset' function on the effects settings panel.
Upgraded to Main Concept 9.9 SDK on Windows, Mac and and Main Concept 3.4 Transcoding SDK on Windows, Mac and Linux.

Mac OS X users can now purchase an AVID DNxHD license.

I gather outstanding issues that prevented the Beta release of version 12 on Windows and Linux have been resolved. So, that If everything well with the latest 11.5.2 build, it's hoped to release it next week, along with the version 12 Beta on Windows and Linux.

Seems there's a delay to the planned Beta of version 12 on Windows and Linux coming out with an 11.5.2 release, but due to a couple of last minute changes required to 11.5.2 this has been delayed by another week.

The Lightworks V 12 public beta is now available on Windows, Linux and Mac. Having Lightworks across 3 operating systems has been Editshare's goal in their road map for the program.

Users will be able to install version 12 beta alongside the release version 11.5.2 and safely step back from 12 to 11.5.2. However, there will a delay when switching between versions for the data base to be rebuilt.

There has been a number of fixes since the last Mac v12 beta.

Lightworks V12 now works on all three platforms. Its architecture means that changes can be made on Windows, Linux and Mac versions more or less simultaneously.

The work required for tri-platform implementation delayed release of the Mac v12 for about a year but now it's sorted, all three OS should benefit from regular and simultaneous updates.

There are more additions in the latest public beta.Lightworks Version 12.0.L on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X Now Available as Public Beta

A new Colour Correction Effect and a new Selective Colour Correction Effect have been added, together with improved the delete panels on bins and allowing multiple bins to be dragged from the Content Manger to a rack on the desktop. There has also been a number of fixes and Mac and Linux specific changes.

This latest build introduces import of FCP7 XML files. However there are some current limitations with XML import, which should be checked. There is a number of general fixes, plus additions to the timeline, effects and colour correction.

Also Mac and Windows specific fixes.

This latest build fixes a memory issue in the Mac build including a regression introduced with Retina displays in 12.0.n.

A quick beta version, which adds the ability to read audio levels from FCP7 XMLS and fixes a couple of regressions. The release of version 12 is still scheduled for 24th September 2014.

This has a number of cross platform fixes including offline activations failing with Free only licenses and added Apple DV formats to supported formats for decode.
