Re: Lightworks release date
Release versions are those that have gone through the beta testing stages and are deemed fit for release. The beta versions are new builds which often have new features to be tested by users, release candidates are beta versions which are close to being released, with mostly final fixes on each new build.
Having said that, a number of users do use the beta versions because they tend to have the latest bugs addressed. You can run both release and beta versions on the same machine. The beta versions are usually pretty stable these days. |
Re: Lightworks release date
Thx for the explanation, I also see on the lightworks changelog page that they make a difference in versions by adding after the 12.5 version number "rc1", "rc2" and so on, are those all considered stable versions?
|
Re: Lightworks release date
The RCs are not officially the release version, so bugs still being fixed on a weekly basis as developers and users find them. Although, by this stage getting close to release, so it's stable for practical use by people in that you could use it on a production and not have a single issue come up, however, they're still fine tuning it and correcting any arising issues, so it's not stable in the sense that V12.5 is not finalized until the final release version comes out.
Of course, no software is bug free, but there is usually a beta version running in parallel with the release version of Lightworks and it's not unusual for a reported bug to be fixed and available in under a week in the next beta build. Some users edit commerical productions with the bets versions because the latest bugs on the current release version have been addressed. As an example, here are the cross platform fixes found in the RC4 release notes: " Updated initial Licensing/Welcome panel Prevented application lock out when a corrupt room .TGA fails to load Fixed 'Awaiting rendered media' appearance for assistant applications Fixed missing key assignable commands Fixed incorrect effect overlay if the Start/End of an edit is marked when dragging an dropping an effect Fixed incorrect image appearing on the record edit viewer when trimmed beyond the clip bounds Fixed jitters starting playback with higher resolution material (XAVC) Fixed pop out original function not working correctly on a bin set to List view" |

New V 12.5 features are listed here, key being 4k being available over a greater range of codecs: New in v12.5 Lightworks still comes in two versions, the Free and Pro Versions. Release Lightworks Version 12.5 Available
One of the V12.5 improvements takes an old Lightworks feature (racks and bins), which was going to to be removed in an earlier version's beta and replaced by smart bins (retained because of feedback from users during that beta), puts these two options together into an increasingly integrated system of filing that can be used by the editor according to their needs..

Re: Lightworks release date
The last couple of weeks I've been trying Lightworks out. So far, it (free version 12.5) seems really good. I've been working through the online tutorials. The interface is very intuitive. The program is responsive and fast both on my Windows 7 Pro desktop (Avid MC) editing PC, and my Windows 10 laptop. Plus, it seems to share almost all my favorite keyboard commands with Media Composer. Good chance I'll become a paying user!

Re: Lightworks release date
The Lightworks V14 beta has been released.
https://www.lwks.com/index.php?optio...emid=81#128504 This allows the traditional flexibility of Lightworks, but also has a fixed interface option for newcomers and those who don't require or wish to use the full depth of screen arrangements that Lightwork allows. "Version 14 of Lightworks introduces some incredible new features to the application. Primarily the new fixed layout interface and project browser. This new interface will suit those who prefer a more organised workspace and will help to ease the learning curve for newcomers. It can be enabled via the settings menu on the project-browser screen by changing the 'project layout' option." Also other new features found in the link. Note that Lightworks developers in the past have run a series of staged release of new features, so that they can work through any issues before adding more features to the new version. There is a quick guide video available showing the new fixed layout option, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zucj...ature=youtu.be |
Re: Lightworks release date
An article on the V14 beta, which gives more details;:
RedShark News - Big Lightworks news: Version 14 public beta is released with a new User Interface I suspect that you'd want to edit a feature film or long form production on the traditional or what is now termed flexible layout, rather than the new fixed layout. This gives the editor a choice depending what they're dong and many people putting together their YouTube video won't need the full depth that the flexible layout offers. There has been changes to the old timeline to bring in elements of the new UI timeline, but many things are optional, so you can set these to your own taste.. There has been new code written for V14, so users are going though it, checking for bugs, requests for changes etc in the beta, with many of these are being addressed within hours |
Re: Lightworks release date

Re: Lightworks release date
The third V14 beta build is now available for testing.
https://www.lwks.com/index.php?optio...0602&Itemid=81 There are more fixes and changes based on beta tester feedback. So far, the reaction to the new fixed UI has been positive, the user selecting either this or the traditional flexible UI from the project browser page. |
Re: Lightworks release date
The 4th v14 beta is now available (now updated - see below)
This latest beta version includes a simpler way for users to backup their project and introduces improvements to licensing, such as allowing first time users to start the application and get straight into it without first having to register and verify an account. A Free license will automatically be added to the users system and will count down the seven days until they are required to register an account with Editshare. It also includes fixes and other changes following tester feedback. EDIT There's a new V14 beta. which should be used instead, this, resolves the issue with clip thumbnails in the previous Beta (91222) https://www.lwks.com/index.php?optio...2371&Itemid=81 |

The latest V14 beta is now available.
https://www.lwks.com/index.php?optio...3915&Itemid=81 This latest build has many improvements including the addition of a new RGB scope. Lightworks have been trying to transition to the latest MainConcept SDKs but new issues have prevented this from happening (hence the delay in issuing this latest Beta) The latest SDK continues to be tested but is not included in this build. There are more fixes and changes based on the testers' feedback. |
Re: Lightworks release date
Another V14 beta update is available.

Re: Lightworks release date
Seeming to be building up to a release with this latest V14 beta. The release dates drifting has happened with previous versions, so not surprising.
https://www.lwks.com/index.php?optio...6881&Itemid=81 According to Lightworks: "This latest build resolves the startup failure on Mac OS X 10.9, restores RED R3D support back to the Linux version and the Quicktime Movie export in the Windows 32bit build. Thank you to all those of you still testing these latest builds and reporting feedback, we believe version 14.0 is looking good, there will of course be some minor issues reported that will remain come the release date, these will be addressed in subsequent maintenance releases." |

Re: Lightworks release date

We understand there are still some minor issues (some of which are already resolved for the scheduled 14.1 build)" It's worth noting that there has been detailed beta testing by users over recent months. |

Lightworks V14 released
Lightworks Version 14 is now released. The unique feature is the choice of two types of interface: the new fixed one and the flexible layout which is the classical one with a few changes. It runs on PC, Mac and Linux.
The fixed layout, which based on the one used in Flow Story, has tabs, which creates workspaces for different stages of the edit - log, edit vfx and audio. Newcomers should find this an easier introduction to editing and is suitable for those editing short form, fast turnaround productions, The flexible layout is aimed at the long form productions and has a history in feature film post production. Users should keep an eye out for changes especially around the timeline (now called sequence, rather than edit). Note this video is for V12.6, the differences in V14 are cosmetic, together with some menu changes. You can edit using various methods, including drag and drop, keyboard, onscreen icon controls and controllers New Lightworks features include. New user interface changes Added new project browser layout with project search Choose between Fixed and Flexible (Historic Lightworks) layouts on the project browser Added access to Pond5 media repository from within the application Browse the entire Pond5 database by entering search criteria Play the clip direct from the import panel Play the clip back in fullscreen mode Import the clip into the project and use it as local media (Lo-Res watermarked proxy) Added access to Audio Network audio repository from within the application Browse the entire Audio Network database by entering search criteria Play the clip direct from the import panel Play the clip back directly over your sequence Sign in or register an account, to add clips to the cart for purchase Added new Cues panel and renamed to Cue Markers Added the ability to change the colours of Cue Markers Added the ability to search for Cue Markers Added quick pop up of Cue Marker information Added new import panel functionality Clips can now be played on the import panel the same as a tile in a bin Clips can now be marked/parked on the import panel the same as a tile in a bin Clips can now be inserted/replaced directly from the import panel to the edit timeline Fullscreen display can now be activated on any selected tile on the import panel You can now use CTRL and mouse wheel to change the size of the tiles on the import panel Improved the Voice Over tool functionality and made it available with the Free license Allowed Voice over recordings at all frame rates and formats Added Voice over functionality to Mac OS X Removed the functionality from the record tool and added to a right click menu (Flexible mode) Improved VU audio meters on the Voice Over tool Also Lo-Res Proxy workflows for 4K and other features It's available as a Free Version, a Pro one month License an annual license bundled with Boris FX or Graffiti or an outright license bundled with Boris FX and Graffiti.
