FWIW, I switched to daily, it worked temporarily. Switched back to daily to see what happens.

If fix involves money, I will be happy to donate. The value of this forum is priceless to me.

Ian Stark November 7th, 2008 10:51 AM

Don't know if this helps any, Chris.

In Controls/List Subscriptions I noticed that the Instant Notification checkbox was unchecked for all my subscribed topics. I checked them all, moved to page 2, checked them all etc, for five pages worth. Then I went back to page 1 and noticed they were again unchecked. I checked them all, refreshed the page and they became unchecked.

For the time being I have switched to daily notification to see if that works.

Is this issue affecting everyone? I get the impression from some threads I am following that there is a good dialogue going back and forth, hinting that notification may be working for some.

I've been following threads by clicking on the "New Posts" link. I'm still not getting any notifications. I'm sure Chris will sort it out eventually.

Phil Bloom November 9th, 2008 09:59 AM

been like this for weeks for me

Chris Hurd November 9th, 2008 10:01 AM

I'll try to get this issue resolved this week. Sorry for the hassle, fellows... I'll probably seek professional help, but one way or the other we'll get it fixed somehow.

Ian Stark November 9th, 2008 10:50 AM

And we all thank you for your efforts, Chris, which cause this to be the most extraordinarily valuable resource I have ever stumbled across.

Graham Bernard November 12th, 2008 01:01 PM

In the past 24 hours I just started having this trouble.

Chris, you, and your mates, take as long as you like in fixing it. Seriously!

This resource is THE finest on the Internet.

Best regards

Graham "Grazie" Bernard

Richard Gooderick November 12th, 2008 01:11 PM

Agreed. Worth it's weight in gold.
Hang on, perhaps I should rephrase that ;-)
It's the most useful website I've ever come across.

Thank you Vito. Great tool. I'm now popping in and out of all kinds of threads, it's actually kind of fun.

Graham Bernard November 12th, 2008 02:22 PM

Ah - HUH! - Back working again

Trond Saetre November 12th, 2008 02:36 PM

Graham, do you get any notifications now?
I still do not get anything at all.

Hi Trond! Yes, I just got your one above! Asking if . . . !

Trond Saetre November 12th, 2008 02:47 PM

Hmm, I did not get any notification about your post here.
But that you got one, it gives hope that Chris is on the right track here, and that he will have it all fixed soon.

What I've found myself is since the return email address isn't valid that the spam filter for most email services will reject the email. I changed my settings on my earthlink filter and had all the spam put into a folder and just as I thought, all the notification emails from the board are going there. The problem is that since its not a valid email address I can't add it to my address book so it comes through the filter.

Looks like you are going to have to change the return email address to something that at least looks valid or some of us will never get notifications again.

Martin Catt November 12th, 2008 05:06 PM

Haven't gotten any notifications, either. Fortunately, I usually browse the New Posts list, so I haven't missed anything I've subscribed to. Been that way for a week or so now.

But why would it do that after (in my case) something like five years of being OK? Pretty convinced this is a problem with the BB or SQL database or the like. (OK, waaaay over my head now! Chris and co will get it sorted no doubt.)

Out of interest, what BBS is used here?

I was using PHPbb for a couple of years when I was running the music video forum NDIVIDZ but since my hosting provider went belly up and the domain name got lost forever that all went to the wall, sadly. When I was building a clients only area for my website I came across SMF. Much easier to use (whether it's robust enough for a forum of this scale I don't know). Rambling now. Time for bed.

Chris Medico November 12th, 2008 05:46 PM

The problem is with the return address for the board here is invalid. The return address the board used was - <chris@dvinfo.net> and now it is <chris@hardy2>.

You can see that the current email address is not valid. Until this address is changed to a valid address many of us will have problems receiving notifications.

Chris

Lorinda Norton November 12th, 2008 09:37 PM

Ian’s story sounds much like mine (although I have no idea what BB or SQL means). :)

I’ve used msn.com since I joined this board and always received notifications. About a year ago I stopped receiving them, so last April I changed my profile here to use my gmail address. Notifications came there just fine, but though other email sent to the gmail address routed through to my msn account, the notifications did not (nor did emails sent by Chris).

As if by magic ;) for the past two weeks or so msn now allows DV Info notifications to be routed through from the gmail account. I didn’t touch any settings so am left to assume msn is behind the curtain making changes--for better or worse. I’ve decided it’s not the site, but the ISP.

Don’t know if that helps or makes no difference in solving this puzzle, but there it is, just in case.

Graham Bernard November 12th, 2008 10:28 PM

I got "New Posts" yesterday, when I clicked on it. Now it is failing again.

Got notifications. Got this one, I suppose prior to "New Posts" failing again. I have a 4-way "forum" notification that came in just after Midnight GMT.

I suppose it is the "New Posts" button that is failing AND Intermittent too?

Grazie

Ah, that seems to make sense, thanks Chris (if it is that simple, I wonder why it hasn't been resolved yet or why it's intermittent in some people's experience, or why some people have had the issue for weeks while others, even regular posters like Grazie, are only noticing it now? The joys of technology . . .)

Lorinda, fyi - BB = bulletin board; SQL (Structured Query Language) = a standard interactive and programming language for getting information from and updating a database (someone else's definition, too clever for me).

Graham Bernard November 13th, 2008 02:04 AM

. .and I now got immediate email notification of the previous post from "Ian Stark".

Grazie

Graham Bernard November 13th, 2008 02:06 AM

But "New Posts" button still is not working.

Grazie

Trond Saetre November 13th, 2008 02:14 AM

The "New Posts" works fine for me. Never had any problems with that one.

But still, I havenīt received any notifications in weeks.

And again, Trond, got yours like a "Bullet"!

You sent : 08:14 AM

In my email notifs: 08:14 AM

The "New Posts" button has been working up till about 2 days back now? Yeah, about then?

Grazie

Ian Stark November 13th, 2008 02:41 AM

Grazie, good morning. Try the Controls button. That should give you a list of all the threads you are subscribed to that have responses. I prefer that to the New Posts button, personally.

Ian . . .

As I mentioned, I am getting my subscription responses met.

"Personally" the "New Posts" button allows me to be more eclectic in my trawling of this great site; democratic in my interest of all things DV and spotlights areas that I hadn't even considered before.

This way I will have absolutely NO IDEA in what I am reading, and for this, and this reason alone, it does stretch me and forces me to read and research further.

Grazie

Ian Stark November 13th, 2008 03:58 AM

Sorry, Grazie, I read it that your notifications were up and down.

"In the past 24 hours I just started having this trouble"; "Ah - HUH! - Back working again".

The New Posts button is full of interesting surprises, certainly. Unfortunately (actually, make that fortunately) I am working flat out at the moment and don't have the luxury of being able to graze (no pun intended!).

Good for you! I've never ever done "flat out". I'm FAR too lazy!

He he he . . . I have nine hours on a plane tomorrow and my plan is to do NOTHING except enjoy Virgin's hospitality - everything work related will be in hold luggage!

Graham Bernard November 13th, 2008 05:26 AM

. . and, as I said:Today 08:06 AM: the "New Posts" button is not repsonding.

Grazie

Chris Medico November 13th, 2008 07:35 AM

Whether or not you get notifications depends on how your ISP is filtering SPAM. Earthlink has very aggressive filters and one of the criteria for passing the note on to the user is the return email address must be valid and it must NOT be on one of the blacklisted domains known to be spam servers. This is not something that any user can change so those of us using earthlink will never be able to get notifications if we have the spam filter turned on. In my case it filters out about 50 messages a day so turning it off isn't an option. The down side of having the same email address for more than 10 years.

For other ISPs you may or may not get messages. Depends on how the filtering is done. I can only speak for the ISPs that I'm familiar with.

Jeff Harper November 16th, 2008 08:26 AM

Chris, another forum (named Tweaktown) uses what appears to be the same program for their site that is used here, and their email notification is on the fritz also. I don't know if this is related to us or not, but I thought I would throw that out in case there could be a connection.

Adam Letch November 17th, 2008 02:36 AM

maybe the way

it tags the response has changed and this solicits spam filters to engage, interesting that people from all over the world, with different ISPs (myself inclusive) have had no responses for at least a month now, and yet recieved them previously without a problem??

Sorry for possibly stating what seems to be obvious, the email response I find very handy as sometimes you occassionally forray into another thread that's not usual and post, and you forget you posted and therefore never reply to a counter post as you have no idea another question has been fired your way.

I'm sure your onto it anyway Chris, and it's the only glitch with this otherwise perfect forum which you've hosted so well for some time now.

thanks for you hard work

regards

Adam

Chris, what you say may be true for some, but my ISP is not my e-mail provider. In my case I have received e-mail notifications for well over a year at my yahoo business account and suddenly it no longer worked.

Now *that* is very strange. Thanks for pointing this out... could be an important clue.

Jeff, good to know, misery loves company. Could be a broader problem with the forum software itself (vBulletin). We'll try a forum software update first -- the process usually doesn't require much downtime; usually it's less than an hour. One way or the other, we'll get this resolved -- thanks for hanging in there fellows,

Graham Bernard November 17th, 2008 08:02 AM

Chris? Do you think this is "linked" to me NOT getting the "New Posts" Button to work?

I am getting Forum notifications through to my email.

Grazie

Chris Hurd November 18th, 2008 11:04 PM

Grazie, to be honest I have no idea what's going on. But then I don't even remember breakfast.

Can y'all please clear cookies and test drive it now, as we've just updated the forum software...

Keep your fingers crossed,
