Looking forward to meeting anybody at these events...
Howdy from Texas,
I just came back from the WEVA show in Las Vegas and it was great to meet a bunch of new folks, as well as familiar names I've known online for a long time and finally got to meet in person. If anybody reading this message finds himself or herself at these following events, I hope to get a chance to meet you in person and share ideas about DV and what you're doing with it. RES Fest, San Francisco -- Sept. 7th: I'll be hanging around at Josh Mellicker's workshop series presented by DV Creators, wearing a cheesy red Canon Video shirt. IBC, Amsterdam -- Sept. 14th thru 18th: One of my sponsors, VariZoom Lens Controls, has asked me to represent them at this show. My buddy David Locke and I will try our best to assist the already highly efficient, well organized German dealers at the VariZoom booth. Hope to meet a lot of European folks from DV-L there. Drop by and say Howdy! RES Fest, Chicago -- Sept. 21st: I'll be hanging around again at Josh Mellicker's workshop series presented by DV Creators, again wearing a cheesy red Canon Video shirt. DV Expo is coming up in December, but I have no idea yet whose booth I'll be working for that show. Definitely know I'll be there, though. Hope you will be, too... it's a great event. The name says it all! See you there, |
Howdy from Texas,
September 11th: Needless to say, our trip to IBC has been immediately cancelled. Regarding RES Fest in Chicago, September 21st: I'm not sure yet if I'll be going to this event, either. The opportunity may still be there but I'm a little uneasy about flying, at the moment. :-( |
Howdy from Texas,
Well, I'll be flying again for the first time since 9/11... going to Aurora, Colorado (near Denver) for the Rocky Mountain Film Festival on October 10 & 11. Canon USA has asked me to help man their booth and show off the new XL1S. Then, there's the MicroSoft XP rollout on October 25th in Cleveland... will be at the Canon booth there as well. Don't know the exact location for this gig yet. And, I'm not about to give up my Windows 2000. But that's neither here nor there. If anybody else is in these areas and wants to drop by and say howdy, I look forward to meeting you! DV Expo is coming up in early December in Los Angeles at the LACC. I'll definitely be there, but not sure whose booth I'll be in... either Canon USA, or Canopus, or VariZoom, most likely. Either way, this is always a great show and you should definitely check it out if you can! |
Heading out this Saturday, Nov 10th to COMDEX, a gigantic tradeshow in Las Vegas catering to the PC crowd (sorry, Mac heads).
Will be in the Canon booth. If you're attending this show, please stop by and say hello! This is my *fifth* trip to Vegas this year... sigh. |
Will be at DV Expo at the Los Angeles Convention Center from December 4th through the 7th. Catch me at the Canopus booth, #615 -- this is *the* event for digital video, put on by DV Magazine. A lot of my friends will be giving lectures and teaching classes... Adam Wilt, John Jackman, Bruce Johnson and many others, about a wide variety of DV production and post-production topics.
Check out www.dvexpo.com for more info. See you there! |
Anybody in the Bay area, come on out to MacWorld in San Francisco next week (Jan. 7-11) and say hello. I'll be in the Canon booth.
VideoMaker Expo West is at the end of January in Burbank. Not sure who I'll be working for at that one, possibly VariZoom Lens Controls. And then the New York DV Conference in the Big Apple, February 10-14, I'm really looking forward to this one as this cowpoke has never been to the big city before. Swing by the Canopus booth and say howdy. See you there! |
Digidance Film Festival Utah 1/12-1/13/02
Guy Genin of ZGC will be demonstrating the P+S Technik Mini 35 Digital Adapter at the the Digidance Film Festival in Park City, Utah at the Canon table at the entrance to the screening room on January 12 and 13, 2002. Location: Treasure Mountain Inn, 255 Main Street, Park City.
Hope to see you all there! |
For anybody in the Los Angeles area, I'll be in Burbank at the Hilton for VideoMaker Expo, Thursday the 24th through Saturday the 26th. Drop by the Canon USA booth and say howdy.

I'm planning on sneaking out of work for at least of day of snooping. Anyone planning to attend? |
Hi Ozzie,
I'm speaking at that event and will be manning the Canopus booth. Drop by and say howdy... it would be great to meet you! ;-) |
Great. I'll try my best to drop by on one of the days. Looking forward to it.

The New York DV Conference
Most of you guys on the U.S. East Coast are aware that Canopus will have a booth at the New York DV Conference next week, Feb. 12 - 13. Just wanted to give some heads-up about that event - the location is:
The Manhattan Center, Grand Ballroom, 7th Floor, Booth #140 311 West 34th Street, New York, NY (website is www.dvnyc.com) Booth hours are Tuesday 12th, from 12:30pm to 7:30pm and Wednesday the 13th, from 12:30pm to 5:00pm. There is a Canopus User Group meeting (I assume it's for existing and prospective Canopus customers) on Tuesday night, February 12th, from 7:15pm to 8:15pm a few blocks away at the New Yorker Hotel in the Herald Room, 3rd Floor. Nathan Yanoff from Canopus is manning the booth, assisted by Tim Kolb and myself. Please drop by and say hello if you're at the show. We'll have a DVStorm demo station running for those who are new to Canopus (www.justedit.com). Additionally, I've been invited to host a workshop/seminar/kaffee klatsch entitled "Choosing the DV camcorder that's right for you" on Thursday, Feb 14th at 10am somewhere in The Manhattan Center. Looking forward to seeing you there, |
Chris,
I'll try to drop by the Conopus booth after work on Tuesday and make the seminar that night. |
Aren't these forums great?
I've already met one member of this community in real life...we even did some shooting together. Chris, you're bringing a whole lot of people together across the world...both virtually and geographically. Ya done good, son (written in a Texas accent). |
Chris, is there a remote possibility that you'll be heading OS to and trade shows, ie, Japan or Australia?
Maybe sometime in the future we could organise some kind of DVinfoNet convention. I know I'd bust my arse to make it to that one. John, sure you don't have some Australian blood pumping through ya veins. Ya done good son, is also a classic Australian saying. |
Count me in...I'm there! How about Hawaii? (Heck of a lot closer for me and Adrian than Texas)
:) |
Timing is everything! I plan to be in Boston in March, which is a "little" too late to meet anyone at the NYC show.
Regarding John's (and other's) comments, this is a pretty special community. There are several active ones around, but most seem to degenerate into platform wars, sniping, chest-thumping, and personal attacks. This one doesn't, due in large part to the efforts of our benevolent moderator. Not bad for a Texan! (Oklahoma '71-'76) |
I agree Vic, most boards turn to mush after a few months. This is the only one I've found consistently on target and helpful. Even the "tourists" seem to get the point early on and become good contributors. Having been a SYSOP (I don't think that term is used any longer?) of a bulleting board in the late 80s, I'm aware of the constant attention these boards demand. Like you, I commend Chris for doing an excellent job. Now, how he does this and still manage to find time to make a real living is a mystery to me. ;-)
|
Aw shucks fellas,
What makes this such a great place are all the wonderful high-class members who've stepped aboard, so give yourselves a hand. As a "moderator" I've actually had to do only very little. The secret as to why things have gone smoothly so far is because you can't get in without a valid e-mail address. That may not seem like a big deal but in my experience, the troublemakers never want to say who they really are. Take away the anonymity and suddenly everybody's honest and polite. I like it! ;-) As to Adrian's question, I've had *one* chance to go OS, and that was to Amsterdam last year to the IBC Conference, but unfortunately it didn't materialize. You see, my flight on United Airlines was scheduled for 12pm on September 11th, 2001. I would love nothing more than to take a trip down under to Oz and there is a major show, the SMPTE event, which I'll try to find somebody to send me to. ;-) In the meantime, a DVinfoNet Getaway Weekend (or week would be better) in Hawaii sounds like the ticket. But I doubt we would get much done except try to run the place out of tropical drinks and screen some old movies. |
<<But I doubt we would get much done except try to run the place out of tropical drinks and screen some old movies.>>
Like I said...I'm there! ;) |
I don't know about getting no footage. Everyone can bring their cameras down to Sunset and shoot me getting delt the goods by that nasty mother of a wave.
Then I'll be leading the push for some soothing tropical drinks or 50 |
Count me in! Be there with my XL1S :)
|
Ozzie Alfonso: it was *great* to meet you at the New York DV Conference. Thanks for stopping by!

Likewise Chris. I just spent a 12 hour, non-stop day taping actors - directing and working the XL-1s. I'm beyond tired at the moment. When I get a chance I'll put in my two cents re the XL-1s. The short of it - great camera! Weakest part - the EVF. After 12 hours looking through it you just have to trust the focus is okay. The reason is more complex than just a low res color finder. But more on that on another occasion. Now to meet with the clients and try to settle on a cast. Another few hours worth. Oz |
Howdy from Texas,
Drop by and say hello if you're coming to any of these events: ShowBiz Expo in Los Angeles, June 2 - 4 for Canon USA InfoComm in Las Vegas, June 12 - 14 for Canon USA DV Expo East in New York City, June 25 - 26 for Canon USA MacWorld in New York City, July 17 - 19 for Canon USA VideoMaker Expo in East Rutherford, NJ, July 25 - 27 for Canon USA Los Angeles DV Show in Burbank, July 29 - August 1 for Professional Tape and Communication Supply -- it was great to meet everybody at NAB -- thanks, |
Anybody going to the WEVA show (Wedding & Event Videographers Association) in Las Vegas next week, Aug 26-29, drop by the Canon booth and say howdy! It would be great to meet you. My "booth buddies" will include Don Berube, Adam Brooks and Daniel Berube, all moderators of various forums here in the community. You can make fun of our tradeshow attire. Be sure to pay us a visit,
|
Chris are you going to be at RESFEST in SF this year ?? or any of the RESFEST showings ?
|
Hi Donatello,
As always, it was great to see you at RES Fest in San Francisco last year. Unfortunately they're not sending me to that particular event this time. I might get to do some other RES Fest, but I really love San Francisco so I'm kinda feeling left out right now. Hope to get up there again soon... should make it to MacWorld there in January at any rate. |
Anybody going to DV Expo West... Dec. 10 - 12 in Los Angeles
www.dvexpo.com Drop by the Canon booth and say howdy -- it would be great to meet you! |
Chris,
Having lived in Houston the last two years, I was really spoilt by having everything I wanted within a 24 hour shipping distance, if not just a run along the 610 loop. Now, my beautiful home country, South Africa, has succeeded in it's siren songs and I'm happily perched on the scenic slopes of the 12 Apostles in the 300 dwelling community of llandudno just a few kms south of "The most beautiful city in the world", Cape Town. Having the XL1S and a Titanium 800 with FCP3, I've caused quite a stir down here, but man, do I feel lonely. Don't get me wrong, the DV Community is a life saver, but nothing beats the opportunity to spend a day "shopping" where you can touch and feel all the goodies. With all that said....How about a Dv Expo in Cape Town? This place is a mad house with top international commercials and features, yet the only store that has anything DV related, carries a Cokin adapter and holder and a 1.6 extender. Anything else has to be shipped in. In the few months I've been here I've met 3 XL1's, an XM1 and a PD150 and I'm a hermit, so they are here. I would also seriously consider being a local rep if anyone is interested. What do you say Chris, ever had the chance to step into an enclosure with a beautiful cheetah and hear her questioning purrs as you stroke her? |
Man, I would jump at that chance in a heartbeat, Guy! There needs to be a larger worldwide network of DV tradeshows.
|
Seriously, Chris, how would we go about it? We have world class facilities, a dynamic industry, the Gateway to Africa, millions of tourists and a VERY favourable exchange rate. I would really be interested in rolling this stone!
|
Guy
It would take some major sponsorship from the leading manufacturers in this industry to support it. RES Magazine has a film festival in Cape Town every year. That might be something to look into... expanding what they're doing into a bigger event. |
Howdy from Texas,
For anybody going to MacWorld in San Francisco in early January (see the calender at top of page), be sure to drop by the Canon booth and say hello, it would be great to meet you! |
Chris,
Thanx for the info. Strangely enough my wife is now working at The Video Lab in Cape Town who turns out to be one of the sponsors of Resfest. So I'll start there. I have also picked up the business card for the Digital Video Association of South Africa, so I'll check that out too. Who knows, huh........ |
Guy, I would like to know more about the Digital Video Association of South Africa. If you get any info or a link, let me know please. Thanks,
|
at NY show
I'll be at the DV show in Feb. Who else? what days? I'll swing by the Canopus booth. Everyone will be wearing name tags, right?
see u in FEB. |
Anyone coming to NYC DV Expo?
Hey, I'm still here but it's been a while since my last post.
Is anyone coming to the DV Expo in NYC on the 30, 31, and 1st of February? |
