Lockups and incessant 'rendering for playback'

Maybe some of you grizzled FCP veterans can shed some light on these mysteries.

1--I just canceled a Compressor export out of FCP6. Now the Menu bar at the top of the GUI is locked up. I can click on File or Modify or Sequence and nothing happens. The mouse still places the playhead, and hitting the spacebar still starts and stops, but up above they're all asleep. ???

2--I have a final sequence made up of several nested sequences. [Each nested sequence contains one multiclip derived from two HDV clips. I only cut between the video in the multiclip, no audio cuts or transitions. Then i layed in the second audio stream beneath the multiclip and keyframed whatever smoothing was needed.] There's a music bed beneath the sequences in the Final. Every time I make even one adjustment to an audio keyframe on the music bed, the red lines appear over several of the nested sequences and I have to render or hear the beeps. Is this normal? Can it be avoided?

not sure about question 1 (quit and repair permissions????), but maybe the renders are due to the sequence settings not being the same as some nested sequences...

Quitting and restarting the app does fix number 1, no repair required.

The settings are the same for both nested and final sequences.

thanks though
