Freeze frame

Using FCP 7. When I click on a frame in the video clip the frame seems to stretch and when I go to Modify: Make Freeze Frame, the frame gets grainy. I figure something is wrong in my settings but can't find where. I am deinterlacing the frame but to no avail.
