Help! FCP Media Files Offline/Missing

I was attempting to roundtrip my entire timeline(1hour and 20mins) several times from soundtrack pro to fcp and it would not complete giving a message that a file was missing...... a box popped up asking to make movie self contained each time....... on the last try I saved as self contained and noticed it would take forever to render out so I canceled this action.........after I went back to fcp several of my clips were missing(offline)...... I tried to reconnect them and the clip is missing completely from where it was saved on my hard drive with all other clips.......is there a fix for this?

Re: Help! FCP Media Files Offline/Missing

It's unusual for media clips to just 'disappear'.

What were the clips - .mov or other?
Captured from tape or digital camera files?
Have you looked in the Trash?
Have you emptied the Trash?
Were the files on the internal or an external drive?
Have you checked your scratch disk settings and their locations?

If you have an idea of the clip names when you first imported them, Easyfind - Freeware applications and services for Mac - DEVONtechnologies is an excellent free utility for finding stuff that's 'missing' even using partial filenames.

Re: Help! FCP Media Files Offline/Missing

Hello Dave,
Yes the clips where .mov and where digital camera files.....I have looked everywhere....they where stored on my external harddrive.... During my research last night it appears that this has randomly happened to others for no known reason.......I received the message"General Error" and at one point when FCP was making a self-contained movie I quit that action..............From what I was reading it appears that the files may have been corrupted.....I will try the application you suggested to see if I can recover them.

If you find them and they're corrupt you might want to give this a try:

Pro Maintenance Tools - Maintain, troubleshoot and optimize Final Cut Studio, FCPX, Avid and Adobe Premiere

Even if you don't, you might want to try it anyway.
