Showreels

Hi,

I realise many video editors compile show reels to market their wares and to use as a calling card or a CV.

My question is: how does one go about compiling a showreel?

* large portions of projects?
* "Showing off" use of effects, etc?
* How long should a showreel be?
* Should it contain a complete presentation or should it be designed to be entered and exited at any point?

Pretty vague I know, but just looking for a starting point.

Many thanks,

marks

Don Donatello September 4th, 2007 09:25 AM

i suggest you take a look at other reels ...
you can find many online ...
take a look at production houses reels in your area or country .....
if your speciality is SFX's then you show more of it ...
show you best .. IMO ok isn't good enough .. i'd rather see a 2 minute excellent reel then a 6 min ok reel ...

here's the way i look at reels - 1st i watch in without audio , 2nd time with audio ...i figure the worst section on it is the BEST i'm going to get from that person ( i have to play it safe ) - if that worst is all i'm looking for then it goes into the maybe plie ...
also once i'm interestd then i ask for a reel that has longer sections from edited projects ( 2-6 min sections) usually those reels are in the 10-20 min area ..

in general i find most reels start with a quick cutting intro ( 60-120 seconds) using clips from many projects .. then they go with sections from individual projects ...

Event shooter in Westwood (LA) Oct 10 (paid gig)

I'm looking for a second shooter for an event in Westwood on Oct 10, 2007 from approximately 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM (actual shooting time is 90-100 minutes). It is a two-camera shoot of a series of presentations on a stage from a stationary location.

I am looking for an experienced person, ideally with a Canon XL2 and a good tripod. That's what I shoot with and it's far easier to match footage from identical cameras. We'll be shooting with house lighting in a well-equipped auditorium.

This is work-for-hire. Footage is owned by the client and will not be supplied for your reel.

Please respond to me with your rate, equipment list and any online examples of similar work you've done (NOT rock videos, models getting undressed, or your kids prancing through a field of daisies...LOL).

I am based in the San Francisco area and will be flying in to shoot it.

Thank you!

I agree with Don that you need to check out other reels to get an idea of what looks good and get an idea of length etc but I'd like to think about a couple of things first.

lots of people say "I've gotta have a showreel" or "I've gotta have a website" but what for? I'm not saying you don't (if fact both are a really good idea) what I'm asking you to think about is what do I want them for? who is going to look at them? what result do I want for the investment of time and money to set them up?

Those sorts of questions will help you define your target audience and your target result - that will hopefully help you decide what to put in your showreel and on your website.

Once you know your audience you can work out the best way to reach them - DVD's in the mail / online presence(website) / handing out VCD's with a business card or ???

I just spend 2 days acting in a TVC/infomercial for a videographer friend and he spent a good deal of money to create a personal commercial with no clear idea of his audience - he wasn't clear on who he trying to reach, or what he trying to say - think about those things first

My showreel shows I can act (hopefully) your's should show you can capture and create the images that your target audience want to see, be they young couples about to get married or corporate training managers or ??

just my 2 cents worth

Looking for a videographer for job in Loves Park, IL

I need a videographer for a paid 1-2 days job within the next month, shooting some footage from a factory in Loves Park, IL.

No editing, we will do all post processing here, you will just have to send us your DV tapes.

I need to edit the footage with some of my own footage taken with Canon XH-A1 in HDV-format, so you must use a camera this type.

We will have a storyboard that describes exactly what we want, and which we will discuss with you before the job. We are talking about shots from a production factory, - creative shots, closeups with some effect light on moving high tech machines etc. - No interviews.

There will be a person helping you on the location.

The footage will be used for a 5 min. company introduction video.

We need professional quality and therefore we need a person who is confident with such a type of job.

Email me at "reklamefoto@mac.com" if you can help!

Crew needed for Feature Film near NYC.

Hello all,

I'm looking for an AC for an upcoming feature entitled 'Drawing With Chalk'. The film (to be shot on the HVX with M2/Brevis adapter) will mainly be shot in White Plains (20 miles north of NYC) with an additional few days scheduled for a shoot in upstate NY. Our first shooting date is Oct. 20th and 21st with the rest being shot in April '08.

The film is about the conflict between an artistic life and a practical life and one family man's struggle to have both. We have a SAG Ultra-Low Budget agreement and intend on shooting for 18 days. Our budget is low, but the position does pay (travel/food included of course).

We are looking for someone who has experience with pulling focus with the M2 or Brevis (we have the Redrock Micro FF). If you would like more information or would like to send your resume, please contact me at: todd@drawingchalkpictures.com

We are also looking for additional positions: Best Boy, Grip, Gaffer, etc. All positions are paid. Again, we are ultra low budget (so you won't get rich), but you'll still be able to pay your bills.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Need PAL mini-dv tapes captured

Hey all,

My NV-MX8 died, and I have no other PAL cams. Would anyone in the pacific northwest be willing to dump these down to a hard drive for me?

I would greatly appreciate it.

-Brandt

John Miller September 17th, 2007 10:46 AM

Have you checked your NTSC cams? I have a couple that play PAL tapes just as if they were PAL cams. An undocumented but very welcome feature.

Brandt Wilson September 17th, 2007 11:29 AM

Thanks John. Yeah, I have. My PV-DV953 and 852 both say "unknown format", or something to that effect. I'd love to find one that plays back PAL.

I have access to an Optura 30 and my Optura XI should be back up and running soon. Do you happen to know if they play back PAL?

Thanks!

John Miller September 17th, 2007 11:49 AM

I have a sneaky feeling it might be a Sony thing. e.g., PDX-10.

Richard Alvarez September 17th, 2007 01:02 PM

Any Production houses/companies in Buffalo Area?

Does anyone here from the Buffalo area need an extra part time editor or helping hand with their production house/company?

I'm a student at UB and I took a leave of absence from my part time job to work for a concert promoter but as it turns out he isn't booking as many shows as he said.

So if there is anyone here I can't speak with about doing a little part time work I'd be absolutely thrilled. Thank you!
