Looking for Video work/ experience in NY
 

Hello! Any New York event/film videographers, film makers willing to take an inexperienced intern? I have been teaching myself video and edit and I need experience! So far I have filmed two weddings, a couple of performances, two art studios and a fashion show, some of it can be seen here: YouTube - celestina646's Channel and here: erick munari on Vimeo. My eqipment is: Canon XHA1, Canon HV-20 with wide angle lens attached, one good tripod, one bad, MacBookPro 2.4Gb with FCP, a roll of Gaffers Tape, Rode Video Mic, Costco Led lights, a bunch of Hard Drives and headphones.
As I work freelance art handling, my schedulle is fairly flexible, and as much as I do not expect to get paid much for the learning experience, some money would be appreciated (negotiable). I live in Brooklyn. Thank you for the attention, Erick.

Wedding Shooter in St. Catharines, ON: Sept 27
 

Passing on this information for a friend of mine. He'll be out of the country for six months and is trying to set up someone to shoot a wedding that he will edit when he gets back. Looking for a shooter with their own gear.

Location: About half way between Beamsville and St. Catharines ON.

Ceremony starts at 2:30 and they want a shooter to stay until the bouquet/garter at about 11:45, so we're looking at probably a bit over nine hours, depending on how much pre-ceremony stuff you want to get.

Ceremony and reception will be at the same venue, so it's a relatively easy shoot, it looks like.

I have recently acquired my very own HDV Canon XHA1 camera along with Glidecam 2000Pro and a tripod. I am looking to get experience in shooting events such as wedding, any corporate events and etc. I will bring my own gear and all I ask is that I shadow with you so I can get some experience under my belt. As stated in the title, I will shoot for free with my own equipment and all I ask is that you just guide me a little.

If you feel you need an extra person to shoot an event I am your man. You can have an extra camera at the event at no cost and it can look more professional as you can use more shots from various angles so in turn we can both benefit.

Motion Graphics Experts...Help!
 

Do most motion graphics pro's work freelance or are there any people out there looking for a steady paycheck doing that kind of work?

The company I work for is in the process of hiring a new production person and I'm definitely looking for someone with more motion graphics experience than actual shooting/editing experience. While the complete package is always nice, we're based in Virginia, Illinois so we don't see a lot of resumes from people with that kind of experience. Is this because it is a lucrative market and most choose to stay freelance to make more money or are they in such high demand that they never go too long without a job?

Also, what sort of pay does someone in that field usually look for?
Any info will help me at this point because I think I might be looking for something we'll never get (or be able to afford). Any information will help. Also, if your motion graphics skills are impressive and are possibly looking for a full-time job and willing to relocate to Virginia Illinois, I'd definitely like to talk to you.

I think motion graphics is a more niche thing than shooting/editing, and also it doesn't seem like Illinois is the most booming place to be for graphics or video in general - there aren't a lot of jobs posted on this board for example that are in Illinois.

Craigslist too - it's rare to find video jobs in Bloomington, Champaign, Lafayette, or Springfield, but there are some in Chicago. I think it's just something that's a bit hard to find so the people offering it are few and far between - it's hard to attract them to this area. I've considered leaving for 'greener' pastures a few times myself.

There aren't many downstate schools with good motion graphics being taught either that I know of - we were just taught how to shoot and edit, and that's about it, so there aren't a lot of readily available highly skilled students either I'd guess. I'm sure there's a few classes at SIU or ISU, but again Chicago is the draw around here, if you're going to stay in-state - or at least that's the way it feels to me from my experience.

Not sure about pay. I think freelance is attractive because it offers you the most profit per job, but it's also lumpy, at least for me it is. That's my biggest struggle with it - I have a flexible part-time job that pays the bills in-between, but sometimes the swings are still a little wild - one month you profit $10000 or something, the next it's more like $500. That'd be my selling point if you're trying to land a freelancer - basically you have consistency on your side. You could try to have some kind of profit-based commission or bonus tied in too -- that might be attractive to a freelancer.

Not sure if any of that helps, just my two cents. I don't do a lot of motion graphics so I'm probably not your guy, but I'm in Illinois so I understand the market you're working in a little bit.

2 or 3 Video Crew Needed as Character Models for Shoot
 

We have need to set up a still shoot that depicts a videographer and maybe a sound person on location covering a news event (perhaps on the Capitol Mall etc) SEE ATTACHED. There is NO MONEY in this as it's a payback favor to a manufacturer - Petrol Bags for loaning us a bag for review.
Basically we'll pay gas money and buy lunch and refreshments for crew assistance. The crew are the subjects. The scene depicts a camera on tripod with indie/i-reporter camera facing away to the scene (the capitol for example). In the foreground on the ground is the Petrol camera bag in question (that the real subject). In near background and slightly out of focus is the boompole operator for visual continuity.
So this is not about shooting video, but rather about shooting a still of a pair of audio/video guys that happen to use Petrol bags to haul gear around.

Normally, we use each other as models but this time, we're stuck without models.

Shoot date can be anytime during the day - preferably during week in the afternoon between 2-4PM on the mall.(Smithsonian Metro)

What I need:
2, persons that look like indie moviemakers or ENG i-reporters. Age, gender & race are non-issues. Average build - no portly persons for this one.
Wardrobe = jeans or cargo pants + casual shirts + Video vest optional.NO bright INDIGO shirts, worn denim jeans preferred. Black or blue Baseball hats (no logos)+ sneakers. ALL black outfits are too much for this.
I will supply all the gear and the still photographer.

I got a project in ~6 weeks which involves a week-long webcast, we're using XL-H1's (In SD 16:9)

Either way, I've never used this camera before and was just hoping to check one out in person and figure out the basic features and usage before I fly across the country and do it live.

I don't plan on shooting anything serious if I could see your camera, I might bring a Mini-DV tape to record some stuff and maybe dump it to a laptop to look at later?

Anyways, not positive if this is the best place to ask... but it was worth a shot...

HI Guys;

Well, we just landed a legal client...we're now filming/editing/producing video shorts for the webspace for attorneys all over the country. I've got three guys now, but it's clear that I need more...and in other parts of the country.

DVInfo seemed like a good watering hole for experts, so I thought I'd post here.

My pressing need is for an HD videographer in the SF BAY AREA. We have several pieces that need to be filmed up there in coming weeks, but one immediately.

NOTE: We also need videographers in Florida and New York right now. Typically, we expect you to be filming about 2-4 pieces a month for us initially.


HERE's HOW WE OPERATE:

Film a legal talking head with lav mic, script provided, and should feature two camera angles;
B-roll of the building;
B-roll of the attorney talking to subordinates in his office, etc.

Should be a 1-2 hour shoot.

HDV required...videographer will need to ensure that lighting is not an issue...another words, proper settings or bring a light. Background noise will be key...it must be eliminated, so a lav mic is pretty much mandatory;

Freelance videography demand in NZ?
 

Hey - I may be moving to New Zealand soon on a Working Holiday Visa. I've got my own projects but while there's tons of nature videography to be filmed there, I was wondering how I might be able to find paying work as a freelancer - nights and weekends.

Let's face it, I'm just looking for an excuse to go traveling around New Zealand filming everydamnthing without running out of money.

I don't want to take any of your leads, but if you could give me some advice, I'd appreciate it.

As an amateur you will probably struggle. Also, we are a PAL country, so your gear may not be suitable.

Depends which city you are in, but for nature - there is only one player, "Natural History" based in Dunedin.

You would probably be best off shooting your own projects and enjoying your travels, and then getting some work in a bar or fruit picking if you run out of cash....

Despite some of the most spectacular scenery on the planet (tho' pretty thin on the ground as far as critters are concerned) the market for footage shot here is, guess?

Natural History NZ makes it's living shooting just that and exporting it all over the planet but not much gets shown here as it's such a small market.

You're best bet for paying work would be to get a commission from someone in the States who wanted NZ footage of a particular type, tho' that brings us to the thorny equipment problem.

From your gear list you seem woefully under equipped to shoot the sort of HD footage a client is likely to want. For you to gear up to the fully pro gear required would cost so much you'd never be able to pay it off unless you got the contract of a lifetime.

Then, of course, there's the logistics problems etc etc etc.

I think it's back to Ben's last sentence, unfortunately, tho' you should be able to have a blast traveling around the country.

Hey, if CH ever gets the "regional flags" thing working you could do a "NZ DVinfo Round Trip" and visit all us NZ DVinfo'ers. Heck, any excuse to take a trip up to "Central".

Here's an idea. NZ has some of the best fly fishing on the planet. Maybe I can help you with a proposal to shoot some for Discovery Communications ( Animal Planet et al).
I'm pretty expert at the shooting still of Flyfishing and will always crew in exchange for stipend to cover cost. We'll pay local guides to be part of the deal etc etc. A Proposal is the first place to start.

I think you guys misunderstand my intentions.

Many backpackers do a working holiday visa so that they can work a bar or pick fruit for cash. I'm actually hoping to land a more permanent, 9-5 job - the WHV would allow me to tell a prospective employer: "I can start work immediately, and if you like me, then we'll talk about jumping through immigration hoops."

I should have been more specific: One of the things I was thinking about doing was continuing my filmmaking on nights and weekends like usual, but I was thinking about upgrading to a Canon XH-A1 which, after a factory upgrade, can shoot in NTSC and PAL.

If I'm only shooting video for myself, I might as well just stick with the NTSC HV20 since the HV20 shoots in 60i and 24p, and since I'm just watching it on my computer, it should be able to handle all sorts of frame rates. I could justify getting the Canon XH-A1 if there was a possibility for freelance nature work - but it sounds like even the Canon XH-A1 wouldn't be "pro" enough for use.

New Zealand has about 4 million people in it. Of those approximately half have recently graduated film school... you will be up against a fair bit of competition.

Auckland has the most viable industry, but no nature.

The industry is freelance, I would be surprised if you find a full time position.

You will not find a job as a cameraman with your experience and proposed equipment. You may be lucky enough to find some casual work as a trainee.

The market is significantly different to the USA. My suggestion to you is to come with no pre conceived ideas or expectations. Have enough money to survive (cost of living is high here) and see what happens. Spend a week in Auckland looking for work... who knows, you might get lucky!

No, I didn't misunderstand your intentions, well, I don't think.

My comment about "Pro" gear is quite simply based on the format specs I've seen posted here that will be accepted by the major players world wide for transmission.

HDV is, in the main, seriously frowned on. Don't ask me why, it looks pretty good to me and most other folks, but there you are.

I did see somewhere where some organisations would accept content with up to 15 - 20% HDV, but that still leaves you with a 80 - 85% hole in anything you decided to shoot here in NZ.

I myself shoot an A1 and HV20 and am perplexed by the "no HDV", and there is certaiainly no way I can afford to ramp up to a format that would be acceptable to a "major player".

That said, if you can find someone in the States (or elsewhere) who will accept straight HDV, you might just make it fly.

The other reason for suggesting you find a backer in the States is that there is practically no 1080 HD being shown here in NZ that doesn't originate............guess where?

Yep, the States.

Take the "big 4" series (whatever they're called) and that's about it, period.

The major channels here will not/ cannot afford to commission HD work here in NZ, so end up buying it overseas. The smaller channels here aren't touching HD with a barge pole.

I appologise if you thought I was having a go at either you or your gear.
