Re: upgrade from canon xa20 to sony

I have both an XA20 and NX5.

I got the XA20 specifically to supplement my NX5 as a backup, because at the time the XA20 was the only "small" camera with a 20x zoom.

Now, the new Canon XF200 has a 20x zoom. I would upgrade to that if I were you.

The NX5 is getting older (still great) but it's a good bit bigger.

I'm tempted to get an XF200, to supplement my friends' 2 XF300s.

But I also want a Canon C100 as well and a Nikon D810. LOL

Don't know what I'm going to do.

Do you own any lenses at all? Canon / Nikon? It's always good to have a camera you can swap lenses on... camcorders are great for lots of situations, but the new Sony A7s shoots in the dark.

Re: upgrade from canon xa20 to sony

Yeah, I have some nice Nikon glass, shooting with a Nikon D90 now that's 5 years old:

Tokina 11-16 F2.8
Nikon 17-55 F2.8
Nikon 70-200 F2.8 VR2

I also use those on my Nikon V1 with an FT1 adapter which shoots amazing HD video, but ergonically is lackluster control wise. I do a lot of wedding work with that V1 because it is so awesome. I figure the D810 would make a nice upgrade to my both my D90 and V1 - kind of a 2 in 1 deal, because I do some photography as well.

I think I'd prefer the C100 in terms of overall functionality. I like the idea of the XLR inputs and all the buttons on it. I could get an adapter to use my Nikon Lenses on it.

The XF200 would make a good camera too with that 20x zoom on there, which is pretty important for when I'm shooting events and have to stay in the back.

Terry,

The xf200/205 are brand new from Canon. In fact they have have not begun to ship yet. End of July is what I've heard.

I'll be into one of those.

I was wondering if a Sony nx5 e/u would be a step up or down

Re: upgrade from canon xa20 to sony

Forget the Sony NX5, it has a newer sibling the Sony NX3. It's cheaper, newer - better, has feature likes wi-fi , 1080 50P, and a built-in light. Also has a feature called Clear Image Zoom (giving you 40x), a clever digital zoom that has been getting good reviews.

You won't ever get 50x optical zoom, this is the closest you will get.

I would go with the XA200/205. Much better controls and better MXF recording capabilities. It will be coming out late July early August. I have played around with a preproduction unit. B&H has a video with a top Canon person discussing the cameras details.
