iRiver 795, New

Purchased the unit a while ago, checked its operation 3 mos. ago; fully functional. It is iRiver 795 w 256 mgb of memory, more than enough for a wedding. The unit was new in the package w Quick Start Guide, Operating manual, Music Manager manual & software on CD.

Bought it to record couples vows at wedding, never used it. This is one of the units that an electret lavaliere mike will work with. All for $65- postage included.

Hi Dave,

It's an ifp-899. I can tell it's not the screen, but a connection somewhere, cause if I press on the lcd, some of it comes back to life. I took apart a dead one I had to see if it would give me any clues, but as you said, it was tough to disassemble, and I didn't want to destroy the other one trying to fix it.

Don't knock yourself out, by any means. I just thought maybe you had come across this before.

Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated,

Vito

Definitely seen the problem before, including the intermittent if you press on the shell.

I suspect it's actually a bad screen, rather than in the ribbon cable or connections - it's a very complex assembly (don't know if you got the screen removed from the mainboard or not to see what under it?). If it IS in the actual screen, the only way to repair it would be to replace the whole screen/ribbon cable assembly. Strangely not a single one of the ones I've got has any lines that are "off" to experiment with! BUT I can see about removing a screen assembly - I have an idea if how it might be done, but it may take a custom attachment to a soldering iron, and even so, the ribbon cable is awfully delicate. IF I can sucessfully remove one, the "transplant" shouldn't be difficult.

In the end, if the display is readable (usually is, even with a few lines flaking), probably better to just use it as is.

I'll forward this link to a friend looking for some irivers as well.

Thanks for giving us first crack :)

First thing I'd double check is that the line/mic settings are the same in the menus - I seem to recall that the wrong settings can be a bit noisier, and there are several settings. Sounds like you've looked at that already, but that's the "easy fix"...

If that's not it, the likely cause is a faulty daughterboard, a tiny little board that sits under the mainboard and contains all the I/O circuitry... and a royal pain to get to unless you know the disassembly tricks. I don't think I have a "donor" that has a usable board, but I'll double check. I think the only 8 series I have that is "dead dead" was already scavenged for usable parts, but I'll check and let you know!

Yep, that's pretty much what I had concluded. I've resigned myself to just never changing the settings for as long as it lasts. I can at least tell when it's recording, so it does the job for now. Too bad there's not an easy fix.

Thanks for your feedback and suggestions. Hope your sale goes well.

Cheers,

Vito
