Everything loads slow on dialup.

I have filtered phone lines so my max con speed is 26k with downstream max rates around 2.5kbs. So yeah.

I spend most my day on t3 so in the evenings I'm pretty SOL

I live in US NEw York and I though I should start reading some magazines which would help me learn more about film sound and techniques.. Does anybody know any magazines that I should buy????

Hi guys

Can anyone recommend any industry magazines for good reading on my long daily commute? I've scanned many forums and there seems to be a lot out there. I'd appreciate your feedback as I don't want to waste time or money on magazines that are not respected.

I love my free DV magazine subscription. I was even willing to pay for it, before they offerd it to me for free.

It depends a lot on what your focus is. There are probably 30-50 in total.

I like:

EventDV
Videography
DV
STudio
Independent (at store once in a while)

The internet advertising boom seems to be killing off trade magazines. Notice how much less content the current issue of DV has in it?
One of mine even closed it's doors and went all online, but I've already forgotten the name since they are all so similar.

Anyway I get free subscritptions to DV, Videographer, and Studio. All have good original content and all are good for a commute but all have a lot of reprinting of the same press releases. They tend to blur together after awhile

I also pay for American Cinematographer. Pretty snobby but unique and I feel that I actually learn from it. Plus I can make future Netflix picks from it :)

Bill- the one thing that will keep magazines from going completely online, is the fact that you can conveniently roll one up, and take it to the bathroom with you. Sure... you could do the same with a laptop, but would you?

Thanks for the feedback. I have picked up some of these mags at tradehows and, as has been mentioned, a lot of the content seems similar. What really gets me is manufacturers and their resellers writing there own articles, but I suppose free mags have to rely on advertising revenue.

It's really useful all the same to know what the more experienced of you are reading.

Though it does seem a shame.

BTW, I'm really interested in cameras, accessories and editing systems (and trying to get my head around compatiblity issues). And, of course, HD.

RES use to be my favorite but it's gotten less about digital filmmaking nowadays and more about all types of creative media.

There is also a magazine called "VideoMaker". I have a subscription to it and it is alright. Most of it is geared toward product review and stuff like that. But there is also regular articles on tips and techniques on the differenct facets of production. It's an OK magazine. I'd like to see more "how to" type articles though.
