Re: Anyone else not a big fan of the nifty 50?
I have owned many 50mm lenses from Nikon, Pentax, Canon, Contax, Leica etc in f/2, f/1.4 and f/1.2 speeds, but always eventually sold them all. For most work I much prefer the wider lenses in the...

Re: Reducing Wind Noise...beyond the dead cat.
When it gets really windy, I prefer to use my pair of Sony lav mics with the wireless Sony WRT & WRR units. The actual ECM-77B lav mics have micro wire cages and foam covers, and I sometimes also add...

Re: Reducing Wind Noise...beyond the dead cat.
Some of the cheaper Zeppelin/inner frame-type covers don't always cover the whole length of mic tube or XLR connection. But, yes, you're right Colin that some of the better Zeppelin-type blimps which...

Re: Shooting underwater for first time help...
I'd go for the 550D with the 17-85mm. I think the Epic has a flat port, so shouldn't cause any problems. Just test that the edges of the port arn't causing corner vingettes with the lens set at 17mm....

Re: Kodiak Brown Bears
I agree with Ryan on many points, especially concerning tripod work, although think the frame rate was OK. I've never been convinced on 24p and prefer Pal's 50i and 25p.
The most obvious problem...

Reducing Wind Noise...beyond the dead cat.
I had originally placed a link to an interesting video I viewed on youtube showing how to avoid wind noise, but decided to delete it because of it containing a reference to a company, and so may be...

Re: Cannot capture with XL2 using Firewire cable
This is a big problem with the XL2 and firewire ports, especially if you are using Vista. I have known at least five different XL2 cameras to exibit this problem. The older PCs seem to recognise the...

Re: Kodiak Brown Bears
Very nice work, Kent, with some beautiful sections of filming. It was interesting to watch the bear that was not particularly hungry, 'playing' with the salmon like a cat plays with mice.
I think...

Re: Canon 50mm 1.4 or Sigma 50mm 1.4 for video
Most of the modern Sigma AF lenses do not have a nice 'feel' in manual focus mode, and the older MF 'pro-level' Sigma Manual focus lenses were much better and higher build quality. The discontinued...

Re: Recharging 5D batteries in remote areas.
I did not mean rechargeable AA batteries, but normal Lithium AA non-rechargeable batteries.
Regarding Michael's advice of only taking 10-12 AA batteries for 7-days & nights of filming...this would...

Re: Recharging 5D batteries in remote areas.
The Solar mat will help if you have plenty of sunshine. The soft-solar-mat can be draped over your rucksack while trekking. The mini-solar hand units are OK for emergency. (I prefer the bigger...

Re: 5D Mk 3?
Canon and Nikon have recently decided to completely stop production in their company plants in northen Japan, for the time being. This of course was mainly due to the recent earthquake and tsunami.

Re: Fall. Shot on the 5D
I didn't of course mean the actual fall clips, because that footage relates to the actual moments of the accident so does not need to be cut - plus it adds tension and reality to the film and can be...

Re: Fall. Shot on the 5D
Nice film with an interesting storyline. Well worth watching.
I think it would have been even more powerful if it were much shorter and edited tighter. The amount of handheld shaky stuff and jumpy...

Re: Your input on Lens purchase (Zeiss or Canon)?
As far as sharpness and quality are concerned, the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2, 1.8, Contax/Zeiss 85mm f/1.4, Pentax A*/FA* 85mm f/1.4, and Nikkor 85mm f/1.4 or f/2 lenses, are all so close to each other as...

Danny, I suggest that you look through the XL2 Presets lists shown on this forum. Straight out of the box, the XL2 tends to be a bit washed-out, but just a simple adjustment of the presets can change...

Nice comparison clips on the Canon primes, Michael...although maybe I'd have picked a nice looking female to focus all that lovely glass on; and to help maintain interest levels... :)
