Re: 1st dances

Hey Jeff, I pretty much always have two camera operators, thank goodness. Very rarely have the luxury of three or the difficulty of one.

First problem is fiddling with cameras before it starts....

Re: How much do you use a glide/flycam ?

Hey James, one thing I wanted to add... I played around with a friend's Glidecam a few weeks ago, and hated it. Couldn't believe how much strain it put on the wrist, and couldn't imagine myself...

Absence of motion

Wanted to comment on a video I was looking at (this is not one of my videos!).

Typically, when I shoot, one of my rules of thumb is "either movement in the frame or movement of the frame". So, for...

Re: Anyone score any black Friday deals?

The deal is seemingly still available; maybe it's permanent!

Art, if you pull the trigger on this, please post some sort of commentary on how you found it. I can see it as being handy, but mainly...

What to talk about on first meeting with couple

I guess the main thing I tell myself is that it's not a sales pitch. I hate making sales pitches. I believe, rather, in laying out information and letting people make up their own minds. The main...

Re: Wedding at The Legendary Breakers Hotel - w/ DJI Footage

Hey Chad,

Some quick thoughts...

* Liked the way shots flowed. Thought it was great that, quite often, after a series of moving shots, there's a series of static shots.

* A number of truly...

Re: ?Ways to Use a GoPro - And which one?

Poking around on YouTube for how people are using GoPros at weddings. I came upon the following. This guy used nine different camera angles during the ceremony, and had a GoPro on a big stick or...

Re: My first wedding

Hey Kjartan, I really liked your choice of music, and I thought it felt like a charming wedding.

Main comment: I have to say that, as a casual viewer, I lost interest after about 1:15 when they...

Re: Wedding at Ash Lawn - Highland, Charlottesville, Virginia

Hey Michael, I guess my main feeling is that it feels well shot, well covered, well edited. There's nothing wrong with the video, so it's hard, or I think so anyway, to say how to improve.

I've...

Re: ?Ways to Use a GoPro - And which one?

Made more of an effort to use GoPros at the last few weddings, mainly due to Robert's thread, and am finding the footage really useful.

If it doesn't quite match the other cameras, well, I'm not...

Re: Anyone score any black Friday deals?

My mailbox is full of offers from people with "Black Friday" deals, the funniest of which was from Edelkrone. Their Black Friday offer was no price reduction at all; instead, they sent around an...

Re: What to watch out for at Jewish weddings

Danny and Don, thanks for the wisdom.

Remind me to stop calling synagogues "churches" as well (I'm pretty sure I'm going to forget, but I'll try).

But as for Jewish weddings being easy to shoot...

What to watch out for at Jewish weddings

So, I'm shooting one in two weeks' time, and can't remember the last time I filmed one. Maybe January or February.

Does anyone have any particular tips?

Thinking it through, here's some of the...

Re: Has anyone here switched from 5D3 to GH4 for weddings?

Well, I think they're all going to work with blemish removal. I certainly do when I have close-ups of women's skin, be it face, arm, or foot. Discolourations, dry patches, moles, bumps, wrinkles --...

Eye candy vs meaning

Some random thoughts...

A photographer I’ve worked a lot with openly tells us that he wants to make every wedding look glamorous and expensive. Now, you might like/dislike the intention, but I...

Re: Spending money where it matters to brides

I've got a feeling this thread is headed into a DSLR vs proper video camera discussion, because it seems like that's where many similar discussions go.

Before it gets there, I guess my main...

Re: Traveling out of country to shoot a wedding

Heard back from the Immigration Department. Apparently, they think that the Temporary Work (Short Stay Activity) visa is the most relevant.

But the description says, in part, "Applicants can apply...

Things that can go wrong with sound

So, each potential sound source can have issues. DJ line out can be dirty, lav mics can rub against clothing or be dislodged by grooms, recorders taped to microphones can have handling noise, etc....

Spending money where it matters to brides

So, I'd love to get a tilt/shift lens. I think it could be great in video for reception dancing, and could create something like the dreamlike effect that Luke Oliver has in his videos (see sample...

Re: What you can't do with a back injury

Well, this was a sort of two-day event: one-year-old birthday party on the Sturday, christening on the Sunday.

What you can't do with a back injury

Well, just had another lifting injury yesterday, just before the day's shoot (a children's birthday party) started. Kind of lower back, near hip. And I was surprised how much it affected my...

Re: One point of failure vs many?

Hey Robert, let me have one more go at persuading you, because this question bugs me! And if this attempt fails, I promise I'll stop annoying everyone and won’t say another word about probability...

Re: One point of failure vs many?

Yep, sure! That's the "gambler's fallacy" -- "I've had a lot of blacks in a row, so there's a higher chance that the next spin will be red." Previous outcomes don't influence the next spin of the...

Re: One point of failure vs many?

Re probability question, I had a think over dinner and dimly recalled this: to work out the probability of at least one failure, that's 1 - (probability of no failure). Does that seem right? In this...

Re: One point of failure vs many?

Yeah, dual card recording is obviously best. But, Vince, I've got a feeling you've done the wrong equation.

If the chance of a card failing is 1/1000, and if you use four cards, then the chance...
