Re: Finally got one

Up until a few years ago, the old Sony VX1000 was still a popular choice for skate videos. It was legendary when it first came out, because of the small form factor and the top-handle which allowed a...

Re: Atomos Shogun Inferno?

I've only used the Inferno on non-commercial shoots so far, due to the firmware bug that limits you to shooting in 50/60p for 4K (which means burning through SDD's at twice the rate compared to...

Re: Fatal gun safety fail at a music video shoot

History has told us otherwise. There have been a number of high profile deaths from guns on set, even with professional handlers present.

You can't say the same about pot plants, or lowball...

Re: FS700R and 4K over HDMI?

Sorry I didn't see this thread earlier. No, the FS700 cannot output 4K over HDMI at all. It can only output 4K over SDI.

Re: Shogun Inferno and FS700R?

I've got a brand new Inferno sitting in my PO box - unfortunately it arrived the day I left for holidays, so it won't be till early next year that I actually get to put it through it's paces with my...

Re: Wireless Lav System Recommendations

Have you ruled out physical damage to the unit? If you're tried out multiple frequencies, my next step would be to test with a different lav mic.

I know with the current Sennheiser G3's (which...

Re: Updated for 2016-17: Which Viewfinders work on 60D/70D/80D?

Ed, I think Scott is looking for loupe-style viewfinder attachments as opposed to a HDMI EVF/Monitor.

When I had a 60D I bought one of the cheap magnetic ones from eBay for about $30. It worked...

Re: SPC, Necessity or Choice?

Usually when I've asked for a 2nd person in the budget I've been granted it, but I also know when to push my luck and when to keep my mouth shut. I agree sometimes you're better off paying help out...

Re: When to invest in new equipment and sale old equipment?

I think anyone who denies that 4K has benefits other than 4K delivery is kidding themselves. Whether you're cropping, down-converting, doing motion-graphics, etc there are plenty of reasons to think...

Re: $4000 Challenge: Help Me Assemble a DSLR/GoPro Kit

No worries, Scott. You've definitely got some good suggestions from everyone here. I'd actually second the idea of a bridge-style camera as a good compromise. The FZ-series are great little...

Re: $4000 Challenge: Help Me Assemble a DSLR/GoPro Kit

I'd say definitely stick to a DSLR/mirrorless style camera rather than a bunch of GoPros. With GoPro you just can't avoid the fisheye distortion. You've also got no real control over the exposure. ...

Re: Atomos Shogun Inferno?

Well, turns out I couldn't wait much longer before making a purchase decision after having a few 4K requests - so I've gone ahead and purchased the Inferno.

I'll try to do a quick write up on it...

Re: Atomos Shogun Inferno?

Looks like the first firmware update for the Inferno has been released... and still no mention of HFR recording, which they said would be included in the first firmware update.

Sigh.

Looks...

Re: Making a Broadcast Master

2nd that - export to DNxHD then get someone with a Mac to transcode to ProRes.

I'm surprised that the broadcaster will only accept ProRes - I've found they normally prefer DNxHD or even an XDCAM...

Re: Editing tip needed (Premiere or others)

If I'm understanding it correctly, then the best way to handle it would be to export a high-res version of your original 3 hr timeline as a good quality intermediate codec (Cineform, ProRes, or...

Re: C100 Slow Motion Advice

I'd avoid shooting 60i. Shoot 50i as it will give you a lot less to think about in post - just simply slow it down to 50%. It also means you can run the footage in real time if you choose to, where...

Re: Legal rights and responsibilities -- revisited

4-5 Weeks for the first firmware update, which...

Re: Atomos Shogun Inferno?

You can go into your cameras menu's and check the firmware version to find out if it needs the upgrade or not. Firmware version 3.00 or above already has the 4K output; numbers below that will need...

I've had the Cartoni Focus 8 sitting around my house for a week now but my camera is currently in at Sony's service centre for maintenance. So while I can't comment on it's use in the field, I do...

I also find this new behaviour really frustrating.

Re: Cartoni Focus HD Head

Well, after a few more days of scouring forums and the wider web, it looks like I'll have to pull the trigger blind on this one!

If I can find the time I might even do a proper write up on it here...

Re: FS5 Frame Rates

One thing often overlooked with inter-frame codecs is that when the frame rate increases, the amount of difference between frames decreases. Hence the amount of data required to record the per-frame...
