I'm well aware that FCP only works on Mac. Basically, I'm wondering if the advantages of FCP over Premiere Pro mean that I should invest in a Mac instead of a PC.

I have a tape that I re-use as a "crap roll" - usually for when I'm recording sound tests. Nothing on the crap roll is intended to be part of the final picture.

H.264 is great, but it requires a heck of alot more processing power than MPEG-2. So, yes, you could encode everything as H.264 and improve workflow that way - if you've got a week of 24-hour days...
