Re: Exposure lock

You do shoot in Manual mode right?
I really wouldn't depend on something like AE Lock for setting your exposure. Your best bet is to use the histogram and use that reading to set the exposure...

Re: Exposure lock

Check page 171 of the manual... I don't imagine this is something that will help much in video mode though... I would avoid anything that contains the word "Auto" in it

:)

Re: Iris noise in Video mode

Ben, are you concerned about recording noise while adjusting the iris? That part of the video likely wouldn't be very usable anyway since the iris will "jump" in 1/3 stop increments. You won't be...

Re: feeding zoom h4n into the 5D (attenuator)

Exactly...
Seems to me that pumping extra money into equipment that won't produce a difference that you can see or hear without having to do a side by side comparison doesn't make a lot of sense.

Re: feeding zoom h4n into the 5D (attenuator)

I fly solo a lot myself for interviews etc... using the 5DM3, I get audio that is good enough. There is a little hiss but it is easy to get rid of and a little EQ makes it sound nice and full. To me...

Re: FS700 and FPS question

Agreed!
If you are using a light meter on a video shoot, you should check it against a waveform monitor or histogram anyway. Light meters can be very useful for working out lighting ratios without...

Re: FS700 and FPS question

t-stops are simply f-stops that take into account the internal light loss in a lens. No lens transmits 100% of light through to the sensor/gate, and every lens is different... some are less efficient...

Re: 7D or 60D for HD Dslr?

The swivel screen is what makes it so valuable to a video guy!
That and no overheating... at least mine never did...

Re: 5Dmk11 & H4N Zoom

Exactly... you don't want to disrupt momentum or make "real people" feel any more nervous by clapping every single take. I usually try to just slate the very beginning of a series rather than each...

Here's a link to the orignal post I mentioned above:

Re: 5Dmk11 & H4N Zoom

I have a Mark III, not a Mark II, but I had similar thinking about using time of day to help simplify matching audio and video clips. But using the TOD timecode feature created serious problems in...

Re: Filming Night Music Video - Advice Please

Clapping your hands in front of the camera doesn't do anything for you if you are syncing to pre-recorded audio tracks. For a music video, a slate is only helpful for audio sync if you have audio...

Re: Max ISO setting 60d/7d

There's no doubt that the 5D will do better in low light. The still frames won't do the test justice since the grain will "dance" in the video and be more pronounced. The 5DM3 (I know you don't won't...

Re: Max ISO setting 60d/7d

Great low light performance is one of the main reasons I upgraded to the 5DM3 from the 60D. You can rent these cameras pretty cheaply, I would recommend trying one out if you are considering a...

Re: Filming Night Music Video - Advice Please

I would like to know how your speed changes work out for you. It's an interesting idea... if you follow the process you outlined above, you'll end up with a look that might seem like "reduced...

Re: Best way to shoot a smart phone screen without moire?

It really does need to be composited if a broadcast quality end product is required. If your client has high expectations for image quality, shooting the phone directly is going to cause you some...

Re: Best way to shoot a smart phone screen without moire?

Take a look at this tutorial for the reverse tracking technique... this could be really helpful to you if the phone needs to be moving. Once you have it tracked, you can composite your screen in and...

Re: Best way to shoot a smart phone screen without moire?

Exactly.
Moire is only one of the problems... even without moire problems, there are still exposure and color balance problems to deal with too.

If you can pull off a believable composite in...

Re: Magic Lantern & HDMI Output

Sure thing!
If you plug directly into a HD monitor, it will fit the screen properly... the built in LCD is a different shape (not 16:9) since it displays the HD image as well as OSD data. The odd...
