Virtualdubmod is my favourite.
Contains nice filters, easy interface and is open-source.
I'll try your suggestion later.
(have you seen the .m2v file? created with virtualdubmod and hcenc?)

The resulting .avi file can be encoded with cce of course.

But I don't know whether it looks better or worse than Hcenc....

It would look...

I always shoot with Detail=OFF, too
Detail=on adds artificial oversharpening to the raw video which leads to more artifacts in the resulting mpeg2 stream because it is more difficult to encode.

Do you use detail=on in your PPs?
Although it uses artificial oversharpening you may have noticed it as "more detail" if you shoot with detail=off in your PPs and compared then with PP=off.

Ehhm,
Where have you heard that Blu-ray disc doesn't support 1080p?
Do you mean 1080p with 48p, 50p and 60p?

Blu-ray already supports:
1080p 24p
1080p 30p
1080i 60i
1080i 50i

I'd recommened shooting in 1080p 30p for proper NTSC TV output. It's a good choice even for outputting on Blu-ray disc in future. And it works with DV when saved as 30psf.
