Re: Steadicam Zephyr-upgrade changes

Generally Tiffen will add a proprietary anti-reflective coating to the OEM monitors they use for the lower-end rigs. But they don't (or shouldn't!) claim to be manufacturing the monitors.

Re: lighting DSLR, Question Moving Subject?

Your assistant could hold the light, and it would probably look a little better if it was off-axis from the camera anyway. Otherwise, there are plenty of brackets out there that will let you mount...

Re: B&H HDSLR Educational Series with Shane Hurlbut

I keep the sharpness all the way down (contrast the same, and saturation a couple clicks down).

Re: What lens for shooting interviews with 5D?

Sure, but it sounds like you are describing a bare camera with lens held in the hands? My setup is 15 lbs and sits balanced on the shoulder, so the results are no different than they would be with a...

Re: 2k Blonde or 1200wLED?

Almost none, Duncan. Color correction was very minimal from what I saw, just a few power windows here and there. Many shots were all but untouched (I wasn't involved, but I saw the rough cuts with...

Re: 2k Blonde or 1200wLED?

As luck would have it, the spot described in my post above has just gone to air, so I'm now clear to show it on my site:

Re: Does a lens like this even exist?

Can you explain why you feel you need image stabilization on a 30mm?

Re: 2k Blonde or 1200wLED?

Have yet to experience anything like that. I rarely find myself at overt stops. More likely I can opt to rate the camera lower (i.e. DSLR at ISO 160, or standard camera at -3db gain) if necessary,...

Re: 2k Blonde or 1200wLED?

Yup. On a recent 5D job shooting day interiors I had two 18K's and two 4K pars as well as smaller stuff. It may seem completely incomprehensible or like fabulous overkill if you aren't used to...

Re: 2k Blonde or 1200wLED?

Or, just as interestingly (and often overlooked): what can I subtract? Negative fill or eliminating light sources can be a powerful tool to shape the look of a scene. Many a cameraman has gone...

Re: 60Hz vs 120/240Hz vs Plasma TVs

I recently convinced some friends who were TV shopping that they needn't spend the extra money on a 120 HZ set (yes, there are still a few closeout models out there that don't have the higher...

Re: Steadicam Zephyr-upgrade changes

You make an excellent point about the torrent, Andrew--I had started planning an instructional video years ago but the thought of DVD piracy always dissuaded me. I think it was a wise move to avoid...

Re: What lens for shooting interviews with 5D?

I would consider a 50mm too wide for a standard interview with a 5D. It would be fine for certain applications but not others (women in particular will be more flattered by a longer lens). 85 is a...

Re: Nikon/Sony SLR vs Zeiss SLR vs Cine Lenses

Interesting theory Timur, although I don't really think the manufacturers take remote motors that much into consideration (not to the point where they would make the lens housings larger for that...

Re: Nikon/Sony SLR vs Zeiss SLR vs Cine Lenses

The Speeds were always the most compact lenses. Even they got bigger over time--the later generations were larger than the early ones.

Most of the current lenses have larger elements as well as...

Re: Nikon/Sony SLR vs Zeiss SLR vs Cine Lenses

I think the modern day equivalent of this is the concept of being able to select a windowed portion of the sensor, effectively multiplying the focal lengths. That will be very helpful.

Re: Does a lens like this even exist?

less than inches? like millimeters? or microns?!!

Obviously it depends on distance to subject.Under 10 feet on a 7D at 150mm, it does indeed drop below two inches. At f2, this happens at 12 feet....

Re: Help, I'm Drowning... In DSLR

yeah well, I guess neither could I!! too much pressure there, hence my heading to Hollywood!

Even before that incident, I was hired to do Steadicam on a wedding. (if this story sounds familiar, I...

Re: Help, I'm Drowning... In DSLR

Well, my hat is off to you folks for shooting with bare cameras and focusing from the rear screen under challenging lighting conditions. On my last two projects we had some critical focusing...

Re: 2k Blonde or 1200wLED?

Open face lights typically deliver more output than fresnels, although the latter have a tighter beam pattern. For bouncing, an open face will give you more bang for the buck--this is the best and...

Re: Does a lens like this even exist?

The longer the lens, the more the need for image stabilization--but the harder it will be to maintain focus under 2.8. While folks are hungry for that shallow look, it's more important to actually...

Re: Nikon/Sony SLR vs Zeiss SLR vs Cine Lenses

Andrew:

Yes, it is possible to define a limit to the travel of the lens to prevent vignetting etc. You would obviously need to create a new set of focus marks when you do this. On the Preston,...

Re: Help, I'm Drowning... In DSLR

I do have a question for you folks; given that there is a much better chance of blowing focus with a DSLR during a one-time only event, does that ever come up as an issue? i.e. where something...

Re: Nikon/Sony SLR vs Zeiss SLR vs Cine Lenses

I own a set of ZE's and also use the CP2's from time to time. All of the above info is well-presented and correct. Workflow is indeed the bottom line, as you will not detect a difference in the...
