If you can swing it, go for the singh ray...
If you can swing it, go for the singh ray variable and get some step up or step down rings. it'l be cheaper in the long run. Or if you want to get fancy, go for a matte box with filters. Much easier...

Can't speak for the sigma but the first lens I got was the canon 50 1.4 and it's my favorite. I can't imagine a lens being sharper across the range. I have had no issues using my follow focus on it...
