Re: FCP X Now available to buy and download from App Store

No offense David but that is patently false. Apple spent several years and millions of dollars to build an entire new 64 bit architecture. The GUI is simply the skin over an entirely newly coded...

Re: FCP X Now available to buy and download from App Store

David, I'm in the same boat. We have about a dozen open projects going right now. I would never have expected to move them into what was obviously a brand new editing paradigm if every pro feature...

Re: FCP X Now available to buy and download from App Store

<<Yes, but in your example you could at least export an EDL and bring that into Avid. Now that option has been taken away as well apparently.>>

I'm thinking not taken away, just not implemented...

Re: FCP X Now available to buy and download from App Store

By the way, the plusses of X and Motion are pretty amazing so far at my studio.
It's not like this is some blunder.

Re: FCP X Now available to buy and download from App Store

OK maybe I wasn't clear with my point.
The new 64 bit editing paradigm won't allow for the import of the 32 bit editing paradigm because the timeline alone is completely different.
It would be like...

Re: FCP X Now available to buy and download from App Store

Just a little bit of practicality.
Apple had to make the break somewhere if they were going to move to a 64 bit program that was render free and finally utilized the multi-cores that we've all been...

Re: The Singh Ray Vari ND is expensive. And worth it!

FWIW I had the MK II on a 24-105 from recent filming and got a last minute call to do a magazine ad shoot. It was outdoor, golden hour, three subjects and changing light. So I decided to leave it on...

Re: Your input on Lens purchase (Zeiss or Canon)?

Having shot with almost all of the above and also owning the Nikkor 85mm 1.4 AIS, which is as big a honkin piece of glass as the Canon, I think this is as honest assessment as you could make,...

Re: B&H HDSLR Educational Series with Shane Hurlbut

I tend to shoot a good deal of photography while filming and have a sRGB based photo preset in my Custom settings that makes changing quickly. Both 5Ds also have custom VFs that slip on and off off...

Re: B&H HDSLR Educational Series with Shane Hurlbut

I think the best way to look at it is that reducing the contrast and sharpening in the 5D is actually giving you the best latitude and least processing - in other words the flattest picture with the...

Re: Your input on Lens purchase (Zeiss or Canon)?

This is a little confusing because Canon doesn't have an 85mm 1.4, so I'm going to assume you mean the Canon 85mm 1.8.

Obviously from a cost standpoint you're looking at the difference between...

Re: 5D Battery Question

For the record we just got a bunch of these because cold weather, arctic temps just eat these batteries. They cost around $12 each, charge in the Canon charger and have a battery level readout....

Re: Fader ND 24-105 Test

Daniel, these screw in hoods are less than $20 and solve the lens shade issue well, above 35mm.

And yeah, you definitely don't want to push the FND or and variable to the maximum. That said...

By the way, the difficulty of working with lens hoods and the Fader ND has been discussed in a few places. The solution is a Hoya rubber screw-in hood that will fit on the wider outer threads of the...

Well yes and no. When we're filming with AF lenses, EF or L, then the lens' autofocus is always on to grab initial focus for a shot...it's not hunting for focus afterwards.

I shoot AF lenses the...

Hey Dan, coincidentally the scene we shot yesterday that used the Rode VMP was with the 28mm 1.8.

Having virtually all the glass you mention I pretty much agree on all counts. The 28 is very sharp...

Quick follow-up
Shot a clip outdoors in low wind yesterday for a spot and was able to do some real comparison in the studio.
Pretty low self noise from the VMP and it definitely negates the need...

Thanks Allan, A tweak that would be nice on a future VMP would be a female mini-jack input on the mic so the cables were replaceable.

Hi Chris , yes that's the one...the +20 is a real plus with the 5D, yuck, yuck.

Another plus is the LED power/battery indicator on the back.

It's about $230 US.

No Ed, the outdoor conditions didn't allow for any critical use of the HPF - way too much wind for that to have helped.

Be careful of the +20 setting on your camera...it's very hot.

Fader ND 24-105 Test

So along with the VMP test I tested the 77mm FND on the 24-105L today. Again, given the conditions of the upcoming series of spots we're shooting - cold, snowy and backcountry, snowshoes and...

Videomic Pro Test

We've got to shoot a series of spots in the back country next week. Traveling on snowmobiles and unpredictable conditions so I wanted the option to fly a 5DII with the option of direct audio. So...

Hey Greg,

Yes that's the one. It works great. In fact I've just put together a killer 19" HD monitor with articulating mount that weighs less than 7lbs and draws 24W and the Duracell runs it for...
