Re: Drones at weddings

Strange how that video was clearly targeted at wedding videographers, but any actual wedding videographer would have a checklist of problems -- intrusive, huge audio problems (the sound of a bee...

Re: Canon C300 Mark 2 announced - spec list

2K and 1080 can be recorded at 12 bit?? That's an interesting feature.

Thank goodness for the high frame rate improvements.

It's interesting that it can record raw... that puts it into...

Re: Anyone using 5D3 and Magic Lantern?

I think it's four frames or something like that. But bear in mind that DSLR people tend to record sound separately from camera. So, if you have two cameras, either the second will be rolling while...

Re: Westcott does it again

You're quite right! Coincidentally, the most recent News Shooter article was about these lights: News Shooter | Westcott Flex LED light – A lighting kit that fits in your pocket...

Re: Round table discussion - lighting question

Hey Mark, quick thoughts:

-- Distance is one issue. Ideally, the people should be far enough away from the screen that there's no green bouncing back at them, and the more in front you put the...

Re: 1st shoot with Canon 1DC 4K 24P

I think the detail is the main thing I notice, and also the dynamic range. So, in the shots with the waterfall and the fish at the start, you're not blowing out the bright parts completely.

I also...

Re: Anyone using 5D3 and Magic Lantern?

Hey Maurice, I think you're talking about ML raw, right? I'm just talking about recording in normal 1080 h.264 using the automatic restart function that ML provides.

Re: Anyone using 5D3 and Magic Lantern?

I'm finding it brilliant; don't know how I lived without it for so long. Changes the MkIII into a whole different creature.

You don't have to reinstall it each time, but you do need a CF or SD...

Shoot high ISO in camera or boost in post?

It seems that, for photo, it's better to shoot high ISO in camera. That's what a Google search tells me anyway.

But I'm having trouble finding answers about video. Is it better to raise ISO at...

Re: Canon C300 Mk II, 4K & under $8,000?

Here's a prediction for C300 specs (this is speaking-out-of-one's-butt speculative, completely groundless).

$12,000. Internal 4K and UHD 10-bit. 10-bit 422 2K and 1080 up to 120fps. Dual Pixel AF....

Re: Transcribing audio (wav) interviews to text - how?

That's my understanding too. After all, the producer is unlikely to be the editor, and is unlikely to completely trust an editor to pick out the important parts of an interview. More likely they'll...

Re: Transcribing audio (wav) interviews to text - how?

I'm wondering if any of that is voice recognition per se. I think the most popular captioning technologies for live captioning are: (a) stenography (which involves using a lot of short cuts, which...

Re: Litepanels Astra Compared to 1st Gen 1x1 and others

Just noticed the new post on Newsshooter!

Jon, by the way, it might it be worth mentioning -- I think the Astra comes in three varieties -- tungsten, bicolor, daylight. From what I understand, the...

Re: Lav mic- Upside down or Rightside up???

Jonathan, quick thought: test with the specific gear you use. I'm very ignorant of all things audio, but it's my belief that some lavs are more directional than others.

Re: Does anyone care about plasma lights yet?

I was eagerly waiting for the Zacuto Plazma lights since NAB 2012... but looks like production has now been discontinued. My money wound up going to Rosco for a Litepads kit instead.

PlaZma Light...

Re: Audio Drifting Out Of Sync

I normally just correct it manually -- just pull it into line again every 20 minutes or whatever.

One dodgy compromise, but you didn't hear it from me: if you make sure it's in sync in the middle...

Re: Price drop on C300

True! If you don't need 50Mb/s for shooting for the BBC, C100 looks like the better proposition.

Second-hand, even more so. If the C100 Mk I is now $3000 on B&H, what does that drive eBay sales...

Re: Price drop on C300

Don't think so. After all, Sony F7 is $8000, and completely outclasses the c300.

Clients pretty much always ask me for a discount.

To be honest, I think it's like this: (a) they don't realise all that goes into it -- "Isn't it just carrying a camera around and pressing a...
