Re: Capturing audio from DJ board

I always mic one of the speakers and run it into the Olympus DM420. I might do a little EQ/compression, but it always sounds great. I hate having to worry about feeds from the board -- there are too...

Re: Reception Audio Help Please

I do this too. I just started this practice this year, and it's paid off immensely. I usually run a mic -- either a lav or a shotgun, depending on the DJ's setup -- into my Olympus and record the...

Re: Shutter Speed/180˚ rule

Hi Matthew,

There's a big difference between mistakes and creative choices. No one said anything about ignoring mistakes because the client won't notice; the conversation has been more geared...

Re: Help me decide on a logo

I'm a big fan of Aviano Sans -- it's very elegant. I threw together something quick so you could see what I'm thinking . . .

Re: Help me decide on a logo

I'm a graphic designer, so I'll have opinions on them all ;) Consequently, I'm probably going to give advice that is way too detailed and picky. I can't help it :)

Just to give you a frame of...

Re: Shutter Speed/180˚ rule

The great thing about this forum is seeing all the different practices being used around the world. Different videographers will use different equipment and means to achieve results that are pleasing...

Re: GH1 Companion Camera

I use 2 GH1's with 2 HMC40's, and love the results I get, with some tweaking/denoising in post.

Re: Smallest audio recorder

The Olympus recorders are fantastic. Great audio, very small. Although the older ones will give you audio drift, but that's easily corrected.

Re: Shutter Speed/180˚ rule

Haha, we've actually talked about this before somewhere, but I'm too lazy to do a search.

I've thrown out the 180-degree "crossing the line" rule for weddings. The audience is the B&G, their...

Re: I just shot a really cool wedding!

Congratulations Bill! That sounds like it was a great time. And it's very impressive about the solo SDE. I don't have the guts to take on something like that :)

Re: What does your reception light kit look like?

I just bought a pair of Comer 1800's, and even though I haven't used them on a shoot yet, I've been testing them out and am very impressed. They are very powerful LED's, capable of either flood or...

Re: Portable Bluray Players

Hi Monday,

I'm sure no one was bashing your preference of using a portable disc player over a computer device. I think that there are just so many options at his point, and of course we all have...

Re: Comfort Level to go full DSLR

Hi Dave --

I'm right there with you. I never went all DSLR, but there's no way that I'd go that far for event video. I shoot a mix of GH1's and HMC40's, using each when it makes sense or is...

Re: 60i, 24p, or 30p for weddings?

Hey Chris, you're right! It's funny how we all geek out about cameras and frame rates and compression and artifacts and resolution and sliders and whatever else . . . but in the end, it's all about...

Re: 60i, 24p, or 30p for weddings?

Encoding time for 720p is definitely a plus. But the way I understand it is that there is less interpolation/processing involved in scaling 720p to SD than there is with 1080p. The less the computer...

Re: 60i, 24p, or 30p for weddings?

I shoot 720/60p. Mostly because I can't stand 24p, but also because I love the option of smooth slow motion. And it scales nicer to SD than 1080p does.

Re: Highlight Video Advice...?

Hi Travis!

What a beautiful wedding. I love Vermont.

You did some nice shooting -- I like your attention to detail. My first impression of the highlights is that I want it to slow down. I think...

Re: New method for reducing background music

The worst is always when the music bed has vocals in it, and you're mixing speech with it. It's very difficult to get them to play nicely -- but not impossible. Nowadays, my patience isn't what it...

Re: New method for reducing background music

Danny,

You're absolutely right about using EQ techniques to combine music and speech. Several years ago when I was working in TV, there were a certain set of frequencies we took out to "cut a...

Re: to intimidate with pricing or not?

Hi Victor. I've found that listing prices on my website is beneficial, for several reasons.

1. Clients don't have to go that extra step of contacting me to find out whether or not they can afford...
