Re: what is your favorite diffusion?

Just as with lighting instruments, one size of diffusion doesn't fit all. If I'm looking to create a fairly hard light but just want to take the curse off it a pinch, opal works great; if I'm looking...

Re: New Mini Stabilizer for the BMCC

The distance from the gimbal to the camera is much greater than it should be. Much of this is due to the two axis balance adjustments which they are claiming is "unique"--maybe in its chunkiness, but...

Re: Glidecam tilt technique

Every stabilizer operator should pick up the "Steadicam Operator's Handbook". While it is written primarily with big rigs in mind, the operating concepts are the same and it has all the classic...

Re: Trouble with Laing P04 balance

Clive, what happens while it is balanced on the dock and you pan the camera 90 degrees? Do you start to see the same issue? If so, it is probably an issue with linearity in the gimbal.

Also,...

Re: Glidecam tilt technique

Thanks guys! It's been four years since I donned the vest (now I get to huddle in a tent watching other guys do it) so the nuances are starting to slip my mind but the basics stick with you!

Re: Glidecam tilt technique

Drop time is a highly personal thing. There's no one-size-fits-all. And as I noted, it's something that some operators will change depending on the shot at hand.

Smaller rigs tend to perform a...

Re: Glidecam tilt technique

Danny's points are good. I'll try to add on to those.

It is indeed true that the "death grip" (i.e. grabbing onto the center post like it is a panhandle) is not the way to do it. Panning a...

Re: Alternative steadicam merlin jacket

Are you looking for a vest and arm? Between that post and the link Darren provided, I'm getting confused--is there a trend towards lumping the arm and vest together and calling it a vest? That's a...

Re: Circular or standard polarizer?

There's a certain amount of confusion as to the definition of "circular polarizer" out there. It involves a linear (aka "standard") pola that has an additional layer that further polarizes the light...

Re: Ikan's New Featherweight 3-Point Spot Light Kit

Shaun, I would go further to suggest that the term "spot light" has no definitive meaning in the film/video world. As you indicated a fresnel or open face will allow for a certain amount of focusing,...

Re: Great little doc on grip/electric

Since that was made 17 years ago, so little has changed and yet so much has changed. Everyone will agree that the industry is a different place, yet a half apple box still looks the same (possibly...

Re: Digitizing VHS tapes, what format other then DV for lossless digital file format?

I started in on this project a few months back, finding to my delight that my VHS tapes that dated back to 1981 still play perfectly (dumb luck, really). Since I still owned two functional DVCAM...

Re: My Journey to replace my Pilot

One of the most useful cables to have these days for anyone who flies a stabilizer is a 12v out of the rig cable (whatever connector that may be) to a female D-tap (aka powertap). This will allow you...

Re: 3-Axis Gimbals?

Working Steadicam operators spend their days flying camera payloads at least as much as a Movi and often quite a bit more.

Re: Adding 5600 to 3200 color correction for shooting monitors

Hi Daniel, thanks for the suggestions!

Applying 85 to the monitor is a PITA--have done it in the past when there is no alternative and taking the time to do the precision cuts and potentially...

Re: New Sony RX100 mkIII announced

Every budget has a limit. The F55 is actually considered a budget camera on the higher end (compared to the F65 or even the lower resolution Alexa, for instance).

If you are looking at a...

Adding 5600 to 3200 color correction for shooting monitors

Hey: I have a few things coming up where we need to play back source footage on a monitor that will be in shot. In the past we've color corrected on the day via the 3-way color corrector in FCP but...

Re: Tokina Cinema Lenses

Indeed, Brian. In this day and age, the usual MO with AC's when stretching a scale is for focus so critical that they will generally be pulling off the monitor anyway, so they don't bother remarking...

Re: Tokina Cinema Lenses

It may have been put to bed (hint: never ignore a warning from D. Couper or the second one will come in the form of a beer bottle/hockey stick to the side of the head) but I'll add a footnote to the...

Re: 2-Axis Brushless Gimbal on Steadicam

If all you are looking to do is stabilize the roll axis, there's a better way to do it, which is the Lynn Axis introduced at NAB and based on a long-existing concept.

Re: Is the Blackmagic URSA a game changer?

Yes, it is clearly designed to be a production camera. I would imagine for someone who is doing docs that oscillate between run and gun and produced material that the BM Production 4k camera with EF...

Re: Is the Blackmagic URSA a game changer?

Obviously the total payload is more than 16 lbs. The only way to compare camera weights has always been body only. Otherwise there is no baseline.

The flip out screen is not intended to be used...

Re: Is the Blackmagic URSA a game changer?

That's a tad whimsical, along with the Ergocine Lion which mimics the shape of the Aaton mag, sticking a big chunk of wood behind the camera.

The reality is that the Betacam form factor was...
