Do you ever get bored?

When im board i find myself making stupid little videos to pass the time. Some of them come out to be pretty random and unique. Ive decided to post some short videos as a side effect of my boardism.

Haydenfilms Online Film Fest!

My new DV short film LIFE COACH has been accepted to The First Annual Haydenfilms Online Film Festival and I wanted to invite you to give it a watch.

After reviewing over 100 films, an expert panel of judges has selected the top 36 films competing for a $10,000 cash prize.

LIFE COACH is about a laid-off file clerk who reinvents himself as a famous life coach named Sebastian Starr, setting off a string of comedic complications.

The films will be available for free online member viewing and voting at http://www.haydenfilms.com beginning Aug. 30, continuing through Oct. 30, 2005.

The top four filmmakers will have their films shown during the winner's ceremony in November, and the filmmaker with the most online votes will receive the grand prize.

A complete list of the finalists is available at http://www.haydenfilms.com/news.php

Each film will be available to view in its entirely for member voting, with the online community making the final decision on the winner. All Haydenfilms members who vote online will be entered into a drawing for a $250.00 Viewer Appreciation Award, which will be chosen at the end of the festival voting period in November.

Haydenfilms.com was among the first solely online film festivals, beginning in October 2004 as a way for independent filmmakers to showcase their works to the online community.

My last short "CELL PHONES & ACTION FIGURES" was distributed by ifilm.com and featured on The Independent Film Channel.

A cell phone salesman writes a dirty book in an effort to buy an engagement ring for his girlfriend. His world is turned upside down when an eccentric action figure enthusiast steals his car with the books inside.

I thought Jay was being mean, but then i watched the videos... pity about rocky he probably had a future in the biz.

Wes Coughlin August 29th, 2005 07:49 PM

The Office Temps: Fake Jobs for TV in Canada

This is yet another hidden camera fake reality show that uses large DVCAM cassette tape decks. Very cruel, but feel free to comment on the technology behind it or just how it insults people!

P.S: Is it me or is every reality show or security scene in a movie using large DVCAM tapes and decks?

XL2 & XM2 Dramatic Showreel

Just thought i'd post a link to my showreel here to find out what people think:

http://www.archeus-studios.com/showreel.htm - High Quality
http://www.archeus-studios.com/showreel-lo.htm - Low Quality

Most of it is shot on the XM2, with elements shot on my recently acquired XL2. I own the copyright to the music, but didnt score it.

Let me know what you think!

Wes Coughlin August 30th, 2005 08:51 PM

Dont worry; i laughed too.

Eric Brown August 30th, 2005 11:16 PM

Giuseppe, pretty nice work. Don't own a GL2 but use to have a GL1 before I got my XL2. I got rid of it because I stopped using it but still regret it some. Oh, well..
As far as the video goes you obviously put some effort into it. The thing that stuck out to me were the indiscriminate placement of the white flashes. There were other things but I'll talk a bit about these.
These are still being used in MV's but they are becoming a bit cliched and tired.
In your video there's a series of them strung together when we see the kid across the street through the traffic.
They're not being used for any specific purpose such as transitional devices between images or scenes or something to help drive the visuals or narrative.
They seem somewhat thrown in to fill space.
But being as young as you are (that's a good thing) the video kicked butt on many other levels.
Hope you're not offended, just wanted to add my two cents.
Good job, overall, though.

Colin Minihan August 31st, 2005 03:34 AM

im 20 and ive made 6 music vids... u can check the latest here.. www.colinminihan.com/theendisthebeg.mov so take my crtique for what you prob already think its worth...

anyways ya ya white flashes big deal, but there is a big difference between just inserting white frames... and white flashes that look good... try playing with 2 frames before a near fully white frame with bringing up the contrast and brightness drastically or the levals.... even play with the color correction being altered within those 2 frames.

aswell... i dont like the lack of wide shots... i used to be a slave to dv res and be like dmannit anything only looks good with a cu or medium shot in telephoto mode ... thus giving it depth of field.. and resembling a more filmic lens.... but dont be a sucker... if your a super nazi and want to get a more filmic look shoot ur wides.. etc... and be like hey they look like ass now... but wait till i mask them out in ae and give the background fake depth of field by using a guasion blur and applying multiple passes at multiple settings in order to achieve... a variance of blur in the bg....
also, try to sell the band more.. dont just have them perform.. but have them look cool.. intercut moments of slow mo where they are like maybe laughing or looking up with some emotion in their eyes etc... just formula bullshit seen in music videos but hey... the best and bigest names do that shit so if you want to make music vids u might wanna consider it aswell..

thats about all the feedback im up for right now i didnt watch the end part it got botched on me. ... lata oh yah backlight the shit out ppl to add seperation aswell.. and u prob need to use key light too unless u already are.

Jay Gladwell August 31st, 2005 06:25 AM

So far, so good. When will the video be available?

Jay

Colin Blakeston August 31st, 2005 06:44 AM

Hey Jay,

That's the question everybody is asking me these days. Still it's good that people want to see it :)

I'm currently juggling post alongside my day job, and am working on it whenever I get the chance. Planning on getting more featurette type vids done soon and maybe a trailer, thought that seems kind of overkill for a 5min film and I fear i'd be giving away all my best shots. Something like that would be cool for cast & crew thought, and to include on the DVD.

Jack Zhang August 31st, 2005 02:47 PM

It's a TV show. Canadians can watch it at 10:00 local time on Global. Maybe we should describe it to our American audience.

Jose di Cani September 2nd, 2005 06:35 PM

that was a cool peace of work. I saw some very nice shots, but the scenes only take half a second. I like your the things you did with the special effects. The toothpicks are amazing. I think you shouldn't overdo it. The same for the action work. You don't want the movie to be fake, cause it is hard to make action look like it is real. You can tell from some of your action scenes that is lacks somethings (mayby the colours or the way you handle the camcorder..stiff somehow). Try to stand out with cinematography.
I like the nightshot of the moon. For the rest, nice work. YOu have talent.

Andrew Wills September 3rd, 2005 01:59 AM

Thank you for the critique, its good to hear praise aswell as where you think I could do better :)

The action scene stuff (car flying over the bridge) is very dull in colour I must admit, it was a hard day to shoot, as the weather was miserable and it kept raining on and off, and as we were shooting on the motorway, everything is grey anyway, but I definately think I could have done better there.

I'm going to alter the showreel as time goes on, gradually replacing the showreel with new footage I shoot.

Thank you!

Anymore comments anyone? Is the music over the top? Is dramatic a ridiculous name to call this showreel? Do you think there is a better way of doing the showreel? All welcome!

1 Minute movie

Hello everyone,

I recently made a 1 minute movie with the intention of participating at the "1 Minute Film & Sound Awards", a video competition in Belgium.

The jury made a selection out of the 180 movies that were send in. They picked 30, including mine.

There are 3 jury prices and 1 audience price. The audience price will be voted on the internet.

I would really appreciate it and be greatfull if you would watch my movie and vote on it. My movie is far from excellent(I'm just 17, I can still improve ;) ), so I know I probably won't win any of the jury prices, I'm putting all my hope on the audience price.

Here's the link: http://kingkong.be-creative.be/1Minuut2005/1minuut.php

Whats filmed better?

What clip do you think is filmed better? Clip A. http://media.putfile.com/I-hate-filming1Mbps_Stream001 or clip B. http://media.putfile.com/jasonhugeollie_cusomnijja

Glenn Chan September 11th, 2005 04:16 PM

I think A is better.

A: Interesting angles and perspectives with the fisheye.

The last shot wasn't as strong.

B: The location has some nice colors to it.
I didn't like how the camera droops at the end.

Movie shot with the XL-1S

Hello everyone,

My latest award-winning short film entitled THE WARNING is now online. I shot the movie on the XL-1S and edited on Adobe Premiere Pro. I even had the camera on a steadicam for a bunch of shots. You can check it out at www.maptorch.com/the_warning.htm. I will be posting this film in three parts, one each Friday. The film stars some very talented young actors from central Ohio, Dan Kiely (Richard), Ria Filippakis (Pam), Jeff Smith (Mystery Man), Nichole Lavins (Kelly) and Elisabeth Wenzel (Marylin Monroe).

So go check out the movie, and while your there stay to watch my other short film entitled WHAT NOW? and the trailer for my feature film JACK'S HABIT recently released on video as part of a 4-movie set called Psychotic Tendencies (look for it wherever DVDs are sold online!).

Please feel free to discuss the film, and thanks for watching!

Mathieu Ghekiere September 12th, 2005 11:14 AM

Welcome to the boards Alec.
If I were you I would try to move your post to the DV for the Masses board here, that's the place where people actually show their stuff, or you can ask one of the moderators to do it for you.

I watched the trailer: good editing, good music and sound, good framing, story looked compelling, BUT I really didn't like the lightning. It is as if you didn't light at all, and that's why I think it still looks a little bit like a home movie.
If you would lit it, or lit it better, I think it could have been great!

Now I've watched the first part: I didn't like the lettertype of the credits in the beginning. Nice steadycam shot.
Good acting. You know how to build suspension, but sometimes your framing isn't always completely good. Maybe you should train yourself a little bit more with the steadycam shots? On their own, their nice, but sometimes they are a little bit 'crooked' (don't know if this is the right word, searched via internet for the english translation, it's not my native tongue).
And if you do that, it's better to make a style of it, like some film-noirs, or to not have it at all.
Then you fade out after the scene with the pistol (very good shot, you don't see the guy's face!) to the woman, but I would just cut to here, without the fade out.
Then the scene with that woman, THAT one had nice lightning! It looked like you desaturated your colours in post, but it looked nice, and less 'home movie' then the other parts (I'm now only talking about lightning and colour)
and be careful with zooming.

Conclusion: you really know how to get people to want more, and you know how to build suspension. Acting is good, editing also exept for the fades maybe, but you should try to get more attention to lightning and colour.
Best regards, and I'll sure try to look at the second part!

Alec Rossel September 12th, 2005 01:06 PM

Hey Mathieu,

Thanks very much for the in depth response. It's great that these boards are out there with people who are considerate enough to take the time and care that you did to critique someone's film.

I know the zoom you're talking about in the park; it drives me crazy as well. The camera was on the steadicam for that zoom and it was as smooth as they could get it for me. I probably should have just cut it out.

I definately used minimal lighting in this movie. I wanted the diner and EXT shots to have a very "real feeling" so I lit the diner with a Chinese lantern to expose Richard's (the main character) face and that was about it. For the EXTs I used a bounce card.

It's interesting that you bring up framing, this is the first time I was able to work with a bona fide steadicam and it was a learning experience for me. I need to be more cognizant of the framing when the camera is on the rig.

I think the transition between the gunman's rifle and the woman in the park could have worked without the fade, but I didn't want to suggest a totally linear relationship between them.

The next part has some nice INT lighting that I think you'll appreciate.

Thanks again, and don't miss Part 2! See if you can figure out what's going on and what may happen.

BTW: Your English is great

Alec

Clip B has one random shot... apple and oranges. Skate Videos all look the same, someone needs to get creative and figure something out besides the low fisheye. Get a steadycam and loy mode adapter and run after people... cut in some POVs... anything but barrell distorted fisheye shots over and over and over....
