Yes, another reason DVI rules. I'm going to try this technique soon with 3 different Sony hdv cameras - Z1, A1, & V1. Sounds like it should work.
Thought I'd revive this because I've been worrying about the same thing.

I finally tested it today and it worked - even without the remote - you just need to set the camera's clock for the same time at exactly the same time and it works. So you can do it without the remotes.

This is important to me today because I've left home to shoot a Deb Ball and gone without the remote for my Z1 or my V1.
