32G1A vs 32G1 memory cards

We're putting together an EX3 camera package. Part of the package is two 32 GB SxS-1 cards. However, the vendor sent us one Sony SBS-32G1 card, and one SBS-32 G1A card. What's the real difference, and should I press the vendor for a card swap?

Re: 32G1A vs 32G1 memory cards

Hi Tim,

The '1A' is the newer and 50% faster model (800Mb/s vs 1200Mb/s). If you download using an Expresscard slot, then you will notice the speed difference. I have a '1A' 32GB card and it is definitely faster when downloading (through ClipBrowser).

Re: 32G1A vs 32G1 memory cards

Steve,

None of our computers have an ExpressCard slot. We will be using Sony's external USB-connected card reader. With that in mind, will this speed difference ever show up?

Re: 32G1A vs 32G1 Transfer Speeds over USB

Tim, the USB 2.0 spec says 480 Mb/s. However, in real life because of the electrical design and drivers to manage the transfer is typically 280 Mb/s maximum and typically much lower than that. So not even close to the ExpressCard transfer capabilities.

Given the money you spent for new memory cards, I would press the vendor to cough up the second 1A card. Hope this helps.

Re: 32G1A vs 32G1 memory cards

Reviving an old thread because I just bought a couple of used SxS-1 cards, and one turned out to be an A, the other a not an A. The USB 3.0 Sony reader I purchased says it can only do 800Mbps read speed with any SxS-1 card. Does that mean that I will notice no difference in read speed with the card reader between the two card versions? I am not sure if the SxS transfer speed ratings are "theoretical" like USB or actual like SD cards.

Thanks!

Paul

Re: 32G1A vs 32G1 memory cards

The card transfer speeds are very close to real if your system is fast enough.
I have only SxS-pro and SxS-G1A cards, and the SxS Pro cards seem to top out close to 100 MB/sec (800 Mbps), while my G1A cards seem to max out somewhere above 120 MB/sec on my system (laptop w/expresscard / USB3 hard drive.)
