Well, I *lived* in Canada once. And I have relatives in Vancouver and Edmonton.

My dad was born in Moose Jaw and I ski Blackcomb. Does that count? :-)

Honestly though I get that all the time. People think New Zealand is some small little island somewhere in the middle of the ocean....err..aahh..Ok I'll be quiet now.

Off-topic. Hi Aaron, I was fortunate enough to get a chance to do some driving around the North Island a few weeks ago, and while I greatly enjoyed the country, I was disappointed by the apparent deforestation. Driving from Rotorua to Waitomo--basically, from one coast to the other--all one sees are sheep/cattle paddocks and mountains of pine farms (half shorn clean), with scarcely a patch of the dense native vegitation.

For being such an environmentally conscious country, I don't think New Zealand lives up to its reputation in the States as an unspoiled paradise. I noticed your sig and wondered what your take on it was.

These days I'm living in Canada as well, Vancouver. So if you want me to say, "hello" to anyone for you, just let me know. I also have this friend who lives in New Zealand. His dad was from Winnipeg (I'm from Winnipeg) and his father and my father had the same first name, they were born on the say day of the same year, they both got sick about the same time and passed away around the same time.

Yeah, that's us alright. We're a major farming nation and so much of our native forest was removed for farmers. They complain that the rabbits and possums hurt the forest, but I think the humans have removed far more than them ;)

Although I don't have recent statistics, those from several years ago said that we do have one of the largest percentages of reserved land in the world though. I think it was about 20% or something. Not that I'm defending the other 80% ;)

Also a huge amount of our bush land is in the South Island apart from Cantebury where all the farmers are.

Yeah, the image of us being Clean and Green is an arguable one. We still use things like 1080 poison which is banned in a lot of countries. We have huge pesticide usage, and we even have dead lakes, killed by all the effluent that farmers dump into them.

I love the country though, as it is really beautiful and on such a small place you can visit so many different climates, but it's not the eco nation that it's portrayed as.

In Auckland we have one of the biggest rates of air pollution in the world. I think we have more than London.....Auckland 1 million people, London 19 million.

I'm in Canada too, halfway between Cape Breton Island and Winnipeg, in the oldest part of french Canada, Québec city.
Some visitors from Europe still think they could land in Montreal, go up the CN Tower in the morning, see the Rockies and Niagara Falls in the afternoon and drive back for dinner at the Chateau Frontenac in Québec. We're on a different scale, I guess.

Aaron, aren't you the guy who lives in the house in New Zealand. I've lived in both Canada and New Zealand does that count me in.

Aaron's not wrong when he says the majority of the forest is in the South Island. If you spend some time around Queenstown/Dunedin/Invacarrrrrgle you will see some of the most beautiful forrests in the world. BC Canada does a pretty good job of producing spectacular forrests. I lived a spell in Fernie and spent a bit of time hiking around the backcountry, absolutely breathtaking but very dangerous.

1 You first complete a business plan through the YMCA a cost to you of 230.00$
2 Take the plan to coastal Business opportunities inc <http://www.cbdc.ca/english/news/2002/11/cbo.html>
3 It then is approved or denied by the board
4 If your business plan is approved you will get a self employment benefit of 300.00$ per week for 52 weeks plus the funding in the form of a loan you can borrow up to 500.000.00$
I am doing a buss plan right now I am looking for 6000.00$ for equipment
This is probably available in your area but under different organization
And in the first year you get free advise from lawyers and accountants and such

That sounds like a similar program to the one we have in Australia. The government helps fund the first couple of years of a new small business through the social security system. It's a great system ans goes a long way to getting a small business of the ground.

Keith, you and Dylan should get your heads together and see what you can come up with. There is nothing better than working for yourself, it sure beats busting your arse for someone else.

Yeah, too bad, we could have gotten together. Although I was pretty busy at the time and didn't even get to have coffee with an old college friend whom I learned is doing grad work at the University of Auckland's Biotech Institute.

Right--I was there when the Auckland paper ran a special 5-part series on some of NZ's dying lakes.

It didn't seem a lot worse than Sydney. I doubt either city has the pollution controls on cars that we have in the US.

You've got a great country though and I admire anyone who expends effort toward conservation and preservation of its many marvels.

I don't know for Winnipeg, but here, in Saguenay, Québec, the first snow fall occurred last week. :) 300 miles north from Montreal.

Yup... started snowing yesterday(sunday) but that melted, but today it started snowing heavy... Lots of mush outside... I think its here to stay.

I was outside washing my car in shorts and a t-shirt yesterday.

Hi David, I took the HRDC program also, my only comments about it is that you must make the business work within a year. I think most small businesses need more time than a year. I am off the program now, but I need to get another job to add to my income till the business gets off the ground.

Hey to all you Canadians eh.

I am in Hamilton Ontario, I know there is quite a few DV people in Hamilton and Toronto area.

I would like to create an informal co-operative for some idea and possible gear exchanges. not so much cameras but I have a few toys I would gladly loan out to a person who I know will respect the goods.

I.E. portable blue screen, 10 foot boom arm on heavy tripod & dolly. Audio boom asorted lights 1k, 300w, 150w etc. cruise cam and sticky pod on the way... Studio space and so on...

I am an aspring film writer and hopefully will eventually produce, shoot, edit and become the next Robert Rodriguez or M. Knight Shamalan.

Pipe Dreams for sure but it's better than my "real" 9-5 job.

Never heard of the cruise cam, could you explain how it works?

The cruise cam is on of my newest ebay finds :-).

It mounts on the passenger headrest in you car and provides a stable in car shot out the front window.

It was actually desinged for highway patrol cops to tape pursuits and encounters.

All those TV shows that show the "in cruiser" crazy pursuits use the cruise cam. It looks a lot better with a 3 chip cam as opposed to the cheapy one chippers they give to cops.

I only paid about $35.00 US for it. I couldn't make one that cheap.

I just checked ebay and the seller still has them.

Its a cheap neat toy that will come in handy one day.

Hmm, I could make something similar for about $4. A piece of wood, with holes drilled in it matching my headrest rods, then use a threaded screw for my camera :)

What camera do you use with this CruiseCam? My XL1 might be too big for it, I don't know how solid that design is.

With regards to the cruise cam, yes it could be made on the cheap but its actually quit well put together.

I've made a few things and am experimenting with a few more. You basically have to know when its worth your while to spend the time and effort to make it yourself; Versus finding a deal. In this case for 40 bucks I'll take the easy way out.

I have only played with it a bit but it holds my pd100 with the "big-ass" sony 0.7 wide angle on it no problem. It should hold the XL1 okay.

Since '98, I have been mostly doing desktop publishing, then got into 3D modeling and animation, then video and editing.

Right now an Interactive Arts student at SFU, and also working on my Computer Science degree in order to gain some job security :)

To those who are in Vancouver, BC, have you gone to local Film Industry meet ups? http://filmind.meetup.com/ (select country and your city, in my case Canada, Vancouver)

There is a local film festival happening in February here and it would be nice to get in contact with some local film makers.
