Hello from Vancouver B.C.

Hi there,

I'm new here, obviously :), and new to the world of DV. Actually I have not even entered into the world of DV, hence my membership here, as there seems to be a plethora of resources, information, knowledge and experience.

On Aug. 21st I'm leaving the country and driving my newest toy, a 1973 VW Hi Top van, to Central America. I'd like to be able to travel like this full time so in order to fund this excursion I've lined up a few different business ideas which include travel writing, some photography, web related business etc. I've also decided that I would shoot and host video on the countries that I visit and sell them through my website. Kind of like an in-depth Lonely Planet guide that will go into more detail on each location. As an example, Mexico itself may be a 4 hour DVD, as it is a vast country with a lot more to offer the traveler than Cancun and Cabos san Lucas.

These productions would be amateurish of course but the information contained within would be useful to a lot of people. I will be doing everything myself from my bus while I'm on the road. In Mexico I will edit the U.S. portion of my trip and in Guatemala I will do Belize. I know a lot of the members here will tell me to take another year or two to get some experience, take some classes, learn the equipment better etc but that's not an option for me. I'm not looking for an oscar in cinematography but I would like the productions to look good and so I will probably bombard a lot of you with questions as I stumble into this new art form.

That being said I am a traveler at heart, it's what I love to do. I've always enjoyed photography and writing. I play and listen to music and I'm passionate about the places that I visit. I beleive that with some willpower, hard work and a lot of practise I can eventually put together a somewhat decent presentation that will be marketable.

Enough of my ranting. It's nice to be here.

Cheers,

Scott

Sounds like a great trip

Looks like you have lots of plans in place already. Do you have a business model and advertising plans worked out? In other words, how to get the word out about your productions while you are unable to meet clients face to face? I see that being a little kink in the road. Nothing too major, but something to consider.

I'm just going to throw out some questions to help churn the creative & business thinking process...

Being a traveler, I assume you have watched lots of shows on the cable networks that are the sort of "globe trotter" showcases. Have you thought about any focus on food? Foreign food and food reviews is big business and you will be places that specific shows target. I am thinking of <a href="http://www.fronterakitchens.com/">"Mexico One Plate At A Time"</a> a very cool show.

Considering the remote locations, have you thought about data backups or content distrobution? How about type of products. Are you wanting to make travel DVDs and then sell the physical product from your location on the road? Or do you create the production master discs and then ship them off to a duplication company and have a warehouse / business in the states handle distribution / marketing the items? What about downloads of the product allowing the customer to burn the product to DVD or store on HD?

Do you have a company name, web site, or tax ID? Are you going to incorporate, LLC, or remain sole proprietor? What state will you base your US operations from? The home state location affects taxes and commerce may be easier in some than in others.

Do you have any concerns about the security of your expensive digital equipment while out on the road in countries not know for tight security?

I have more questions, but that should be enough to get started. I have been asking and answering these questions of myself because I am starting a home business. Hope these help.

Hiya Jason

Thanks for your reply. You offered up a lot of good questions to consider, some of which I've gone through and some of which I haven't. I'll try to answer them in order and any suggestions that you have will, of course, be invaluable. I'm in the learning process right now.

"Looks like you have lots of plans in place already. Do you have a business model and advertising plans worked out? In other words, how to get the word out about your productions while you are unable to meet clients face to face? I see that being a little kink in the road. Nothing too major, but something to consider."

I do have a general business model in place and some general advertising ideas as well. A lot of the advertising will be word of mouth, postings on different discussion boards, traffic to my website, reciprocal links, selling via amazon etc. The last time I was on the road I posted an update with photos about 1 per week which generated an incredible amount of traffic to the site. People like pics. This time there will be small video updates as well. As for meeting clients, well, that's what the Internet is for. I also have a business manager here in Vancouver who will be handling the fiscal side of things as well as dealing with customers. He's a good friend but he's also a certified accountant.

"Being a traveler, I assume you have watched lots of shows on the cable networks that are the sort of "globe trotter" showcases. Have you thought about any focus on food? Foreign food and food reviews is big business and you will be places that specific shows target. I am thinking of "Mexico One Plate At A Time" a very cool show.

My interest in this escapade is to create an overall travel journal that will go into detail on many aspects of these countries. Some programs will cover tourist areas, others will deal with the culinary and yet others might focus on wildlife. I'd like to touch on all of these subjects at one point or another, hence the DVD format. The program is a straight to DVD format that will not have to be watched chronologically. People can choose regions and view them out of order and still not miss out on anything. Mexico is a good example of why it needs to be done this way. The entire country could easily warrant a good 5 to 6 hour program. If it's broken down into sub categories like Baja California, Chihuahua and the Copper Canyon, Mexico City etc then people can choose to view it as they wish.

I will take a look for that program on Mexico though, it sounds interesting. I have been downloading a lot of programs like Lonely Planet and have been studying how they shoot, how they keep people engaged, etc etc.

"Considering the remote locations, have you thought about data backups or content distrobution? How about type of products. Are you wanting to make travel DVDs and then sell the physical product from your location on the road? Or do you create the production master discs and then ship them off to a duplication company and have a warehouse / business in the states handle distribution / marketing the items? What about downloads of the product allowing the customer to burn the product to DVD or store on HD?"

I won't be selling the physical product from the road. I will be dealing with a duplication company that can take care of everything for me including shipping. That way I only need to ship them the masters and the art work and I can go back to concentrating on the rest of it. Allowing the download of the product is an interesting concept but I think my bandwidth will be high enough as it is without adding more gigs to the mix. It is something I'll look into though. Thanks for the idea.

As for backups, I will have 2 external hard drives with me as well as the latest in DVD burners. Before working with any footage it will be stored on the HD, backed up to DVD and then Fed Ex'ed back to Canada so that I will have all the raw footage available when I get back...if I get back.

"Do you have a company name, web site, or tax ID? Are you going to incorporate, LLC, or remain sole proprietor? What state will you base your US operations from? The home state location affects taxes and commerce may be easier in some than in others."

The company name will most likely be my domain name, wander globe travel productions or something along those lines. I'm not sure about sole prop. or incorporating yet. I've got my business manager looking into all that. He's been checking out some organizations in DC I beleive. No need to remind me about taxes though, I'm from Canada, the land of legalized theivery. When people ask me if I'm concerned about theft in Latin America I always tell that that at least there I'll be able to see the theif face to face. :)

"Do you have any concerns about the security of your expensive digital equipment while out on the road in countries not know for tight security?"

Security is definately and issue. I've spent a lot of time in the countries I'm going to and am very aware of the types of circumstances that can arise. My VW will have hidden storage comparments for the more expensive gear as well as an alarm system and an immobilizer. All precautions are being taken.

"I have more questions, but that should be enough to get started. I have been asking and answering these questions of myself because I am starting a home business. Hope these help."

Well thanks for the feedback and questions. Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. I'm a busy lad these days. Tell me about your business. What are you getting into?

Anyone heard anything about Pacific Audio Visual Institute in Vancouver? That's where I plan to go.

In case anyone is wondering, Saturnin can't run because he's a lazy ass. I heard he just ordered a special wheelchair so his production assistants can push him around.

Eric Gan May 13th, 2006 06:55 PM

Hey guys, just thought I'd introduce myself. I've been reading this board for a long time, but haven't contributed that much. Hopefully, that'll change soon.

I just graduated film school in Sydney, Australia, and I'm now back here freezing my ass off in Vancouver. I specialized in cinematography but in school, we got to try out pretty much all the production roles. Shot a couple of weddings down under - it's fun, but I don't think I'll make it a career thing.

I have some basic gear (HDV, sticks, shotgun mic, glidecam 2K) and would love to collaborate on some projects with any Vancouver DVinfo'er. Maybe we should get together for the next DVC challenge and bring the prize up here.

Hope to meet some of you in person soon.

Cheers

new member here

Hi all,

I'm the proud owner of a new (well, used actually) JVC HD100UA and an apsiring indie filmmaker.
I live in Vancouver proper.
Shooting a short film imminently (as soon as I can master this camera, oh yeah, and cast it).
I plan on shooting a feature, but that has some serious script polishing and pre-prod. work to be done.
Glad to know there's such a strong Vancouver community.
Any other HD100 owners around here?
Best,
James

Ken Diewert May 20th, 2006 01:17 AM

Welcome James,

Congrats on your new to new Camera. There are some great HD100 people on here. I'm on the Island with an XLH1 after much consideration between the two cams. They're both great cams. I used to live over there in White Rock attended Vancouver Film School in early 90's and would take time off my regular job to work as a PA on commercials back then.

Good luck with your project.

BTW, Is Cineworks still around (indie filmmakers co-op)? I used to be a member. Course they were real snooty back then about REAL film vs tape.

Ken.

I was just in Vancouver a few days ago, on tour with my friends' band. I was going to post something here but I completely forgot. I was shooting with my Sony Z1. 9 hours of tape in 7 days!

They played at the Backstage Lounge on Thursday and are featured on CBC Radio 3 right now. Apparently they might get some play on Radio 2.

How often do you ever need a live production switcher? Have you ever rented one? What did you get and what did you use it for?

Thanks all!

Hey Dan,

Small world (or island). I live in Chemainus. I'm an old fart (43). I'm working on a couple of docs and special interest fishing shows, but always had a thing for the creative side (couple of scripts I'm working on).

If you want, we can hook up sometime and talk film. There's another guy in town who just finished his script and looking to produce locally. Also another guy in Nanaimo doing some snowboarding type stuff.

Anyone free this weekend? August 19 and 20?

Hi there!

Is anyone free this weekend? I am doing some video shooting of a martial arts seminar for both mornings and afternoons and would love someone to help. Actually to operate the camera.

The topic of the day is tai chi, and how to push people very far, and how to move people without touching them. Sounds strange I know, but this is all from a martial context.

If you are interested in helping this Saturday and Sunday, August 19 and 20, please email me at eb7g@shaw.caNOSPAM.

Steadicam Meet?

Hello Vancouver DVinfo'ers,

I have an idea that I thought I'd throw out here. Would anybody be interested in a little Steadicam get-together? By that, I'm including owners of any type of stabilizer - Glidecam, Ind!cam, homemade...whatever.

My idea is this: we each bring 2 tapes with us, and our stabilizer/camera rig. We'll take turns filming a tracking scene, and with the 2nd tape in someone else's camera, you are also being filmed on your technique so that you can watch yourself afterwards. That will really allow us to see what we need to work on in terms of technique. We'll use a clapper board so we can sync it up easily in post.

I'd like to try this before it gets too cold outside (which means soon!). If you're interested, send me an email - ericgan at gmail dot com. Let me know what you'll be flying. We need 3 people minimum, but it would be a lot more fun if we can get 5 or 6 to come out. That way, we can setup more complicated shots. Or I suppose we can always bring some actors.

My setup is Glidecam 2000/Smooth Shooter/FX1. This could also be a good opportunity to try out other stabilizers other than your own - if the owners don't mind, of course.

Need some help copying some tapes and taping gig

Hi there,

I am looking for help in two things this weekend in Vancouver.

1) I have about 8-10 miniDV tapes that I would like to be duplicated. I give you the tapes and you make copies and give them back to me. This is paid, to be discussed.

2) I also need someone to do a day of shooting (preferrably on a Sony miniDV/DVCAM camera), on Saturday. Perhaps for more days. This is paid as well.

If you can help, please call me at 604-781-7093.

Thanks,

Ronald

Recently joined DVI, found it very useful already, just bought Canon XL2, arm hurts already, trying to figure it all out so I can make the best use of the beast, I want to make my own short aircraft maintenance and operations videos, seemed to be the best way. Oh God what have I done!
Really impressed with the level of support here, really impressed with the XL2, blew us away when we saw the quality of my first "playing", think what I could do if I actually new what I was doing.
Head of Training for the world's biggest helicopter operator - in 34 countries, I need no excuse to go travelling, now I have to figure out how to get the XL2, my 20D, laptop etc etc in the carry on baggage.

On one flight, I crammed 2 Canon XL1's and a 10D+ lens into my carry on bag. I just hoped they didn't ask me to pull it out to turn it all on. :)

Anyway, if you need an extra camera on the other side of the world, put me at the top of your list. :)

What's up from Vancouver, BC, Canada

I'm taking my first steps into feature length film with a whole bunch of friends, and thought this would be a cool place to be able to ask for advice etc! I've made all sorts of shorts with a cruddy consumer panasonic, which have really taught me an appreciation for proper lighting, a nice story and good cuts, because with picture that bad you're gonna need everything else!

So when I told my friend that it would be cool to make a feature length, he was totally on board. What kind of movie did we want to make? Horror! We've done all sorts of comedies, but horror was what we'd never tried. Funny too, since he loves horror movies. So what's the scariest thing we could think of? Well, zombies. I've always loved those squishy monsters since I first played Resident Evil, and I've finally got a chance to take my own spin on 'em. Furthermore, I've got 30 or so extras waiting to donn their zombie gear.

Now I've just gotta piece together how to make a high quality movie by the time shooting starts late August. My gear so far...

Canon XL2

It's gonna take my former panasonic camcorder cameraman a while to figure this thing out, but we've got three months of test shoots ahead of us, so fingers crossed. The thing that doesn't scare me is lighting. I've got that down pat. The thing that does scare me is audio. I originally thought I'd borrow/lend/rent another XL2, and then use Audio from only one of them. Then I heard I should be using a shotgun mic on a boom. Ok, cool. But THEN I heard that it needs to be wired into a mixer, or something. I always thought I could just wire it into one of the XL2s?

Can't wait to start shooting!

Hey peeps,

Old post, but I figured I'd chime in. I'm also from Vancouver (Ditchmond technically).

I've always been interested in the video scene ever since highschool (9 years ago).

Infact, (I'm probably embarrassing myself by posting this, compared to the caliber posted on these forums), but for several years I ran a website (still live) called Goonish.com . It was a joint site that I good friend of mine and I (along with a few others) posted several short videos that we put together. Some of the videos were recorded with a Sony Hi8 (ek!), then finally miniDV (canon) and finally a better XL1S.

Editing wasn't our strong point, but we did our best. We still keep the site live, just to have a good laugh every now and then. Have a look thru, and enjoy.

Right now, I finally have a HV20 after my long issue trying to get my HV10 fixed by Future Shop. I'm looking at learning the ins/outs of this camera, and using this camera to record some behind the scene shoots as I shoot wedding photography.
