Vegas Pro 8 for $178

I don't know if this has been posted, or if this is the right place to post it (sorry, Chris).

B&H is offering Vegas 6.0 and the Vegas Pro 8 upgrade for $178. Considering that Vegas Pro 8 is a $399 package, this is a pretty good deal. The only negative is that there is no manual provided. I've been a Premiere user for ages, but at this price, I thought it would be a pretty good time to try the Vegas offering. Needless to say, Pro 8 supports HD and HDV. I've just received and installed both from B&H. They installed fine, and both registered with Sony.

The upgrade link above is incorrect.. the correct link is:

Thanks, Yang Wen. I've corrected it in the original post.

Nice tip. Thanks!

Vegas offer.

Hi Paul,
checked it out, are you aware that the upgrade is for the "Pro" version, not to upgrade Vegas 6 to pro. status? Michael.

I'm not quite sure what you're getting at. As I said in the original post, you can get Vegas 6 and the upgrade to Vegas 8 Pro from BH. You wind up with Vegas 8 Pro. Is there some reason why you would want to upgrade Vegas 6 to pro status rather than get the latest version of the software?

Probably he was referring to the sentence in the B&H product description which says, "This Upgrade to Vegas Pro 8 ... allows owners of a previous professional version of Vegas to upgrade to v8." It could lead one to believe that the V8 upgrade might not work with Vegas 6, if it's a 'non-professional' version. But I gather you've already confirmed that the V8 upgrade DOES work with Vegas 6, right?

Ah, I see. Yes, it does work with Vegas 6. You need to fully install Vegas 6 and then run it once to validate it with Sony (very important step -- it won't work unless you do this). Then you can install the Vegas 8 Pro update. It will recognize the installed and validated Vegas 6 as an acceptable predecessor (it might ask for the serial number again, I don't recall now) and then install itself. Run the validation and it will validate just fine and voila! -- Vegas 8 Pro for a super low price.

Recently purchased a PMW-EX1 and sadly adobe is way behind in getting a workable solution. So my options are 1. buy a $450 codec. or maybe 2. buy sony vegas.

Could someone compare the pros and cons of each, no flame wars please... but are they both strictly just editing programs or does vegas handle special effects (where as I would use after effects with premiere) and on that note does vegas work with after effects well?

Roshdi Alkadri February 6th, 2008 11:36 PM

vegas can work with after effects through AAF protocol, but premiere and AE are better suited together as your effects in AE are updated in premiere through dynamic link. As far as ease and speed of editing, vegas kicks premiere (i use both), but when it comes to adding effects, AE plugin support is overwhelming in both premiere and AE.

Sound-vegas wins in this area (vegas used to be a multitrack audio program)

if you're just looking for straight cutting a film etc. vegas will get you faster, if lots of effects is important to you, you can cut in vegas and send an aaf to AE or cut in premiere and automatically update the timeline through dynamic link with AE.

Many flavors, choose yours

Vegas upgrade

Hi Paul,
Hope I didn't offend. I can't believe the value! This is worth the postage to uk. Not available here- $425 to upgrade ! Import tax may be the catch for me. Michael

Chris Wysocki February 7th, 2008 12:33 PM

i just bought the vegas 6 and vegas pro 8 , thanx guys for the info on this great deal. I have vista 64bit ultimate , do i even need to install vegas 6 at all , or do i pop in vegas pro upgrade and go from there? thanx Chris ,

Rick Johnson February 7th, 2008 12:49 PM

Upgrade to Vegas Pro 8

Pop it in and see if it works! It didn't for me, but maybe Sony sent them a new shipment that will.

Paul, welcome to the Vegas club. I'm certain that you'll come to like it as much as the rest of us.
BTW, how will you explain this decision to the folks over at rec. video.desktop?
:-)

Manuals haven't been provided in a very long time (version 4?).
There should be a PDF on your CD.
If not, grab them from the main Sony site here or Sony's archive site here

You do need to install 6 first and validate it before installing 8 Pro.

Will 6 install on a Vista OS machine?

It installed on mine.

Chris Swanberg February 8th, 2008 01:03 AM

Thanks... I just read the other thread on this issue and it answered my Q posed above... What I got from that thread (to save anyone reading this one first some anxiety) is that you CAN install 6 on a Vista OS PC and register it. I also learned that you can call SONY Vegas tech support and they can give you an activation number that saves even having to install your 6 at all (after you give them the Vegas 6 S/N) - better yet. Apparently as well Vegas 8 Pro runs ok on either Vista 32 or 64 bit.

Chris Wysocki February 8th, 2008 11:57 AM

i went to vegas video live chat. www.sonycreativesoftware.com/chat and talk to them , i told them the whole story about not wanting to install 6 to get upgrade to work . they have u fill out a form and said that they will get back to me, i hope its soon , i did this today

from what i understand, if you buy version 6 and then get the upgrade directly from sony, you do not need to install version 6, the B&H version is cheaper because you have to install the previous version. thats is from what I have read on the boards here, not directly from sony.

Chris Wysocki February 8th, 2008 02:27 PM

ahhhhh , see i bought mine from tigerdirect.com for 99 dollars . Thats why im unable to install 8 without 6. Hopefully sony TECH will send me some email showing me how. I hope they dont say screw Fxxxer u tried to semi scam us , install 6 and be miserable , lol

Allen Plowman February 8th, 2008 02:43 PM

Chris, you bought the upgrade, and did not buy 6? or you just don't want to install 6? an upgrade requires you to own a previous version

Chris Wysocki February 8th, 2008 04:07 PM

I bought 6 from b and h but I don't want to install it. In gonna wait alittle bit until Sony tech gets back to me via email. If they can help me by pass than awsome. If not I gotta install 6. After u install 6 and upgrade to 8 can u deal 6 at all ?

Kevin Crockett February 9th, 2008 09:37 PM

Will it work with Vegas 5.0

Just wondering if the upgrade will work with Vegas 5.0.

Chris Wysocki February 10th, 2008 07:56 AM

The upgrade doesnt work with 5.0 . On the top right hand corner of my vegas box from tigerdirect.com it says "Requires Vegas video 6 or 7 software for installation.

Chris Wysocki February 12th, 2008 04:29 PM

Sony still has not got back to me about bypassing vegas 6 to do the vegas 8 upgrade.

For those who have installed vegas 6 and did the vegas 8 upgrade on vista, Were you able to uninstall 6 after 8 was working. Or does 6 need to take up unwanted harddrive space.

Thanx Chris

Allen Plowman February 12th, 2008 04:30 PM

Chris, the upgrade option is available for people looking to save some money. you can buy the full version of 8 and avoid all these problems.

Chris Wysocki February 12th, 2008 05:04 PM

Allen , i like to save money too , I bought the upgrade option last week. Im just gonna go through the process tonight and see if i can uninstall 6 after 8 has been upgraded. If not than oh well i guess , its not that important. right?

Allen Plowman February 12th, 2008 05:07 PM

Thats kind of my point, sometimes sacrifices are made to save money :)

Chris Wysocki February 12th, 2008 08:02 PM

so everything went semi smoothly installing the vegas 6 and 8 upgrade ,
I was able to register DVD architect , but not vegas pro 8 over the internet , i get an error code , error 32 "the server was unable to complete the registration , error 32 , what does that mean?

UPDATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2-13-07 I just recieved an email from Sony. They told me to unistall everything and reinstall a clean version of pro 8.0B and gave me new serial numbers. What the hell , the other way works fine too. Either way is your pick.

Will Vegas Pro 8 read/convert/import Vegas Movie Studio (Platinum) files? You'd think so, but just to be sure...

Yes it will.
However, Movie Studio will not read Vegas Pro 8 files.

Jim Browning February 18th, 2008 07:04 PM

That makes sense...

Even though I haven't had Movie Studio for long, and it covers everything I am doing so far, I can't resist the upgrade deal and have placed my order.

Even though I may only scratch the surface of the Pro capabilities, so much of the training materials (not to mention the discussions here!) are for Pro, that it will be worthwhile from that standpoint alone. I know there is crossover between the two, but that's not the same as speaking the same language everyone else is using, and avoiding the "this might not work in Movie Studio" issues.

Hi.

I did purchase Vegas 6 and the Vegas 8 Upgrade. Did install Vegas 6 no problem, but when trying to install the Vegas 8 upgrade it tells me that I can't install since I don't have Vegas 7 installed... :-(

Would that be because I have Win XP Pro x64??

Thanks, Andy.

.
EDIT: That would be because I didn't run Vegas 6 or input the serial # for Vegas 6 yet. It works just fine.

Sorry.

Jason Robinson March 15th, 2008 07:42 PM

I am pretty sure that there is no 64bit support for Vegas on any OS (XP or Vista) and for any version of Vegas.

Thanks Jason, see my edit above.

Just feel stupid a little, I'll go and hide for a while..... .

I'm just used to inputing the serial # when installing, not on the first run.....

Andy.

Sean Seah March 16th, 2008 05:35 AM

Should not have any issues with 32bit OS. There are problems with Vista for the upgrade but that can be solved by getting customer support from Vegas.

Mark Schreuder March 18th, 2008 01:47 PM

Does anyone know of any vendors still offering the Vegas 8 upgrade for $99. B&H, Tiger Direct and eveyone else I checked now list it for $224.
