Anyelse looking for a great camera, I know it's just after Christmas, but I need to get rid of this camera and pay off the bill.

I'm very interested in the camcorder.
I wonder what come with the camcorder? Does it still have it original box, manual, etc?

No only what was listed; the camera, the hood is on the camera (and lens cap), 2 big batteries, large eye piece, and charger.

Sorry no box or manual, but the manual can be downloaded, if that helps.

Henry,

I'm curious... I also want an lcd monitor with xy flip with good resolution for focusing purposes. What brand/models are you considering? I've read good things about the lilliputs but they seem to lack resolution...

cheers,

Lucas

Hello,

My XL1S is a fantastic camera and I could not ask for better picture quality.

However, I do a lot of traveling and I notice that I am attracting a lot of unwanted attention with the camera.

I mainly use this camera on the road and I hate not being able to get a shot because I don't feel safe taking the camera out. It is also fairly large which makes packing difficult.

If someone with a GL2 is looking to upgrade I am actually looking to take a step down. (how often does that happen?)

I anticipate a lot of repsonse from this thread so I am going to take the best offer.

The XL1S is in mint condition and comes with a Lowepro Commercial AW DV carrying case ($300 brand new).

Thanks.

...Andy

Hi Andy,

I'd be interested in this, but have a few questions:

1. I have a GL2 with wide angle adapter (WD58), case, power adapter, and a few batteries. Assuming you're not looking for an even trade, how much extra cash are you looking for?

3. You previously posted: "I currently own a Canon XL1S which tragically had to be sent in for warrantied repair last week. (it's ok, they sent me an FX-1 to play with while it's being repaired!)". - What happened to the camera, and what repairs were done to it?

Thanks,
Ryan Graham

Hi Andy,

I have a GL2 purchased new in June. It's been used for two weddings and a church program. I have the box, all standard accessories, all docs and packaging. It has not been used as a deck (I have another dv camera for that) and is in perfect condition.

I'm also interested to hear how much extra you'd like.

Reducing the prices on some of these items.

PD150 now at $2150 CDN or $1840US

VX2000 now at $1900 CDN or $1600US with beachtech DXA-4 adapter.

Sennheiser ME66/K6 at $500 CDN or $430 US

Sony 0.7 58mm wide angle lens & LSF-SF8 lens hood at $200CDN or $175US

I prefer email to discuss any of these items (over posting here or a PM) and have no problem giving out my home number to speed up the process and make both parties comfortable.

Hello Ryan,

Thanks for the question.

When I bought the camera I was having the same problem a lot of XL1 and XL1S users had. The camera would eat tapes when rewinding.

The camera was under warranty (and I think it still is) so I sent the camera back to have the tape mechanism replaced.

They also cleaned and re-aligned the heads so the camera is basically brand new inside.

As far as price, I am open to offers. The XL1S is a lot more camera so a straight up trade is not possible.

I am a reasonable guy so throw me your best offer.

Thanks,

...Andy

i don't know if any of the monitors listed are suitable for critical focusing. all have low horizontal resolutions, and i think they're more appropriate for framing than anything else.

I snuck into another thread that I have access to some long carbon fiber tubes (hollow cylinders) that I believe are 15mm in diameter. These appear to be exactly the same as used in rod support systems.

I am building my own system because I wanted something long enough to also use as a shoulder brace and 12v battery holder. I also want a secure mount for my lcd monitor that is farther away from my eyes than the mic shoe on the camera. This requires rods that are at least 24" long. I also want my system to be able to go in airplanes luggage easily, so I measured my duffel/sports bag I use as luggage and have decided on 26" as the length for my rods. A system large enough for all this would cost at least $500 which I don't have.

I went to a local fiberglass supplier that mostly carries stuff for surf boards and boats (I live in Honolulu). They have these rods that measure under 5/8" in diameter. Precisely measured on a fractional measuring tape they come in at barely over 19/32". I did the math and realised that they are likely exactly 15mm in diameter. If they aren't exact, they are off by about the thickness of a sheet of paper. They are also, as one would expect from carbon, very light and strong. Their black color is also appealing for use with video equipment.

If anyone is interested, I could probably get several of these and ship them to people. I don't want to do this as a business, but I know how hard it is to get these rods in decent lengths. If there is an interest, I might take some orders. The rods are 42" long, but might need to be cut down to around 36" to fit in affordable shipping packages. Heck, cut in half, two 21" tubes for under $20 shipped is a bargain. After I cut my rods down, I'll have two 16" leftovers if anyone is interested in those for the price of shipping and a cardboard box. Shipping for these all should fall within the ~$4 cost of USPS Priority Mail and I wouldn't gouge anyone that wanted a few rods since the shipping would be the same.

If anyone is interested, I'll give the place a call and see if they still have a bunch available. Sorry, they are local and don't have online ordering.

Updating the list of Canon equipment I'm selling.

I almost sold this camera but the buyer had an unexpected expense pop up so it's on the block again.

Canon XL1s with standard auto IS II lens and standard shoulder pad. Just back from Canon service with new drum and heads and complete checkout. With 2 BP-941 batteries and 1 BP-945 battery. 2 AC chargers. 1 12-volt car charger. Remote control. Very good condition. $1600.

Century 0.7x wide angle adapter for the 16x manual Canon lens, $400.

Porta Brace rain cover. Great weather protection, $100.

Kata XL1 case (CCC 10 compact case). It's able to hold a Canon XL1s with MA100 and a matte box. This bag fits nicely in an airliner's overhead compartment. $120.

19/32" equals 0.59375" or 15.08125 mm.

It would be best to measure the rods with a veriner caliper to get an accurate measurement of their diameter.

Sounds darn close, tho!

I am looking to purchase a copy of Motion 1.0, not 2.0. If anyone knows where I can find Motion 1.0 or would be willing to sell me Motion 1.0, I would appreciate it.

Here is the rant- I cannot believe that not even 1 copy of Motion 1.0 is available on the internet. Apple has really turned me off on the fact that as soon as the new version comes out, the old one vanishes completely. So, if anyone has a copy that they would like to sell, I would like to talk to you.

Thank you

Hello everyone, I am selling my almost brand new VX2100 camcorder with all the accessories and original box. I mainly used it as back-up for my PD170. I shoot about 5 weddings and 3 Birthdays with it. Yes, it's low hours, I am not a full time videographer. It wasn't used as a deck since I have a cheap TRV25 as a deck. I'm gonna be upgrading to HD soon and I will sell my PD170 later. Most of the accessories, if not all, have never used at all. I bought it at B&H last August 17, 2004 at $2,349.95. I am selling it for $1800 plus shipping. I accept Paypal or Money Order. I am a verified paypal holder and 100% Feedback at Ebay with an ID junprostar. For a buyer that can pick up at my place, I will include a free Bogen Tripod with 501 head and tripod soft case. If you have any questions, feel free to email me. Thank you.

Eniola, sorry, I have yet to make my first rod system and I doubt if I could make it as a profitable business. I am a good DIY guy, but I don't have the facilities for quantity manufacturing.

Sarena, the rods are smaller than 5/8" and I'm guessing that they are within the tolerance of 15mm rod systems. These things all seem to work on friction clamps, so a bit of play is an assumption in all their designs. Regardless, I would love the opportunity to try a device that mounts on 15mm rods but they are all too expensive. Even a simple lens support is about $100.

Dean, aloha bruddah! I've seen many bits of your show on OC16 (I get squirrely during the actual catch). Hey, I just realized that there are no squirrels in Hawaii, so that reference may be totally useless here! For everyone else, it is a VERY well-produced local show. It is far more interesting than any other fishing show I saw on the mainland. Considering that the whole state of Hawaii is a smaller viewing market than most major cities, this show is done surprisingly well on what must equal a shoestring budget for any other market. If I wasn't a bit squeamish about fishing, I would probably be hitting you up for a job! :) Anyway, the rods are at Fiberglass Hawaii off of Dillingham if you are interested. If they are .08mm too large, I'm sure they will fit any 15mm accessories. If they are a tiny bit too large, a quick swipe of some 400grit sandpaper should do the trick.

For everyone, I just compared these carbon rods to 5/8" wood dowels and they are a hair smaller. I wish I had the calipers that Dean mentions, but I'll send my 16" leftovers to someone for free if you can test them with 15mm rod system components and give me your results.

How much for just the 501 head? That's quite a bonus for saving money on shipping! :) I want to go to a standard head for my tripod, monopon, and future DIY jib. The 501 seems to have what I want as there is a monopod mount for the same plate the 501 uses. Once I settle on a tripod head, I can buy the shoe mounts with the same plate. I've used the 501 and it seems just fine for me. I probably wouldn't need the sticks so shipping to Hawaii via USPS shouldn't be too expensive for just the head. Just for the sake of curiosity, what model number are the legs?

Dean Sensui
January 11th, 2006, 03:57 AM
Hi Marcus...

Thanks so much for the generous comments of our show. We're always working to make it better. We try to avoid showing "batting practice" at the back of the boat or too much of the messy stuff, and concentrate on people having a good time. For us what makes the difference is the people who are participating, more than the act of fishing itself.

And, yes, it's a shoestring budget. Our credit list consists of three names. All three of us shoot, including the host of the show -- who doubles as the show's writer. Two of us edit. I do the website. Another one is the expert in the business of broadcasting, etc. But so far we're paying our bills so we're counting our blessings!

Regarding the rods, I used similar rods to make three-pronged and four-pronged pole spears. So I can attest that, yes, these things are pretty light and darn stiff! If anyone needs to make them stiffer, it's a simple matter of filling them with a mix of epoxy and milled fibers or microballoons.

There are different sizes. The last one I got, which might have actually come from a different supplier, is just a shade under 16mm in diameter. I can stop by Fiberglass Hawaii this week with a pair of calipers to measure what's there if anyone's interested.

And I know Fiberglass Hawaii all too well. I've gone there to get supplies for boat repairs and a bunch of other things regarding epoxies and related supplies.

Hi Andy,

I don't live in Quebec, but the trade still interests me. Unfortunately, I honestly have no idea how much extra cash to offer. I know that altogether my GL2 (with the batteries, case, and wide angle lens) is probably worth about $1750, but I'm not sure how much a used XL1s is worth. Maybe if you could e-mail me a general range you were looking at, I could tell you if it was possible for me to meet your expectations for the trade.

Thanks,
Ryan

Canon XL1s for trade or sale

I bought this camera 4 months ago - second hand from a person who intended to get into wedding video production but never got round to it. He said that the camera had less than 10 hours usage and the condition of the camera testifies to this, its in immaculate condition. Also the fact that he had no XLR adapter indicated to me he was not a serious user and thought I got myself a bargain. I bought this camera for 2500 euro with a six month warranty (have ppwk). Also included are two long life bp-45 batteries(and 2 standard), a Lowe Pro bag, a shoulder mount (seen some usage but very handy) and headphones. also a ma100 (bought here)
Also because its still under warranty I sent it to Canon to ensure that it is finely tuned and ready to shoot and have just got it back (I will include the paperwork). I myself have used the camera for under an hour to shoot test footage on my tripod and although have not used it cleaned it regulary to ensure it is kept perfect.
Why am i selling it ? Because I did not research properly the type of camera I needed . The Canon produces excellent results but is not the best camera in situation where not being noticed is important- I need something smaller and less pro looking. This is the situation - I also have Manfrotto tripod with 501 head - this too I have hardly used and bought it brand new about 3 months ago. I want to trade or sell these for a more mobile camera .i.e a Sony of some sort- anybody interested?- I will send pictures upon request - thanks barry

Kodak Cinematography Masterclass - Set of 8 Videos - Rare! - Set of 8 VHS Videos for Professional Filmakers, Photographers, Directors and Cinematographers!

A RARE, RARE CINEMATOGRAPHIC ITEM!
The Kodak Cinematography Master Class Series

Best Selling Series!

This unique series, sponsored by the KODAK Worldwide Student Program, has great value to both students and working cinematographers. Nine of the world's finest cinematographers share their wealth of experience in a workshop setting, as they guide you through a series of professional lighting problems both in the studio and on location. 3-D computer animations are used to vividly illustrate the approaches used to solving them.

**Kodak: Shooting For Realism With Allen Daviau & Sacha Vierny

Allan Daviau ( E.T., The Color Purple, Empire Of The Sun ) and Sacha Vierny ( Hiroshima mon Amour; The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, Prospero's Books ) are given the same script and set. Daviau creates a series of intricate setups, clearly explaining each problem he encounters and the solutions he finds by using filters, lights and F-stops changes. Vierny experiments with a simple and elegant camera move that encompasses much of the action but presents him with a new challenge: hiding the dolly track. Computer graphics of the lighting setups as well as side-by-side comparisons of the finished scenes help you to better understand the techniques and appreciate the results.

**Kodak: Shooting For Drama With Robby Muller & Peter James

Robby Muller's credits include Repo Man, Paris Texas, To Live and Die in L.A., Peter James Shot Alive!, Rich in Love and Driving Miss Daisy. Both were given the same script and set constraints. The beautiful images they created reflect their different backgrounds and philosophies on the art the business of filmmaking. Muller creates a moody and impressionistic feel that is characteristic of his approach. James on the other hand neatly sidesteps the problems caused by cyc too close to the set and creates a wider view of the windswept dusty cafe. Both men prove to be generous teachers, sharing many creative and technical insights that come from years behind the camera. The video culminates with a split screen comparisons of each cinematographer's finished piece.

**Kodak: Shooting For Black & White With Allen Daviau & Denis Lenoir

Allen Daviau ( The Falcon and The Snowman, Avalon, Bugsy, Twilight Zone, The Color Purple ) takes students back to the golden age of cinematography - the 1920's. He painstakingly recreates the shooting style by employing the filtration, vignetting, aspect ratios and shot coverage of the period. In doing so he evokes the spirit and dynamic of the B&W silent screen masterpieces. Denis Lenoir ( Monsieur Hire, Daddy Nostalgie / These Fooling Things, Paris Awakes Shuttlecock ) creates an intriguing comparison to the work of Daviau by using modern cinematic techniques featuring a moving camera. He shoots with both color and B&W stock to make the comparison complete.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS As well as being a storehouse of practical information, this program is an ode to the haunting beauty of black and white cinematography and a wonderful essay on the changing art of the cinematographer from the 1920's to the present day.

55 min.

**Kodak: Location Lighting with Geoff Burton

Location lighting, utilizing the equipment one truck can carry, is the most common task a young cinematographer will face. Geoff Burton ( The Year My Voice Broke, Flirting, Wide Sargasso Sea ) condenses his many years of location lighting experience in this highly practical and useful workshop. Geoff's approach emphasizes maximum use of natural lighting resources ( daylight and practical ) and imitating these sources with the light he adds. Geoff shows how to work with the limitations of locations space and design ( in this case three rooms of a cramped apartment ) rather than against them. He demonstrates how fast stocks and fast work can be critical to success.

59 min.

**Kodak: Shooting For Fantasy With Sacha Vierney & Denis Lenoir

French cinematographer Denis Lenoir ( Monsieur Hire, Paris Awakes, Shuttlecock Zone ) and Sacha Vierny ( Hiroshima Mon, Amour, Prospero's Books, Stavisky ) explorethe world of cinematic fantasy and magic. Vierny generously shares one of his special secrets, shoeing how to create a magical beam of light without the usual need for a smoked filled room. The effect is electric. Lenoir takes you through each step of his lighting design and also gives invaluable information about the use of fluorescent lights. This program explores the techniques that make magic on the screen, but more importantly the cinematographer's creative thought process behind the magic.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Lenoir demonstrates the ability of one special effect to hide another and how to combine several effects to create magic.
