Sean Marks February 3rd, 2006, 02:39 PM Looking for reliable and talented DP to shoot and edit two very low budget documentaries for own cable show - 10 minutes and 30 minutes - in NYC. Film students are encouraged to apply. Need someone who owns or has access to video camera (mini DV), audio equipment and can edit footage. Please email with details of your experience, links to your previous work (e.g. video-samples) and type of equipment. Previous experience necessary. A flexible schedule is also necessary as shooting may be done over one day, a few days or even a few weeks. Serious inquiries only.
* Compensation: Credit, Copy of completed doc's, food and transport included
So...let's get this straight.
1. You have to be reliable and talented.
2. You can be a film student, but you have to have experience.
3. Bring your own camera (of course)
4. Bring your own audio equipment (of course)
5. Edit the damn thing too, while you're at it. Geez...why not just give the damn DP credit as the director, while we're at it?
6. You must be constantly available, at the director's whim.
7. And, of course.....serious inquiries only.
So then, I have a question for the thread. With hacks like this guy roaming the industry, it's near impossible to get a steadily paying gig. I just got canned from not one, but two jobs within two weeks, both for the same reason (producer has a friend that they want to bring in). How do we all manage to get by? Because it sure isn't with any help from these clowns.
Josh Bass February 3rd, 2006, 04:00 PM Maybe we can take the term "The Suck" from the marine corps and use it for this industry.
Mick Isdes February 4th, 2006, 03:48 AM "CREW CALL: DP & Sound Mixer Needed for 3 Spot TV Campaign
Los Angeles Director/Editor looking for local DP and/or Camera Operator with own 24p or Hi Def Camera. Also, looking for Sound Mixer with own equipment, including a boom and lav. I am looking to build a relationship with a solid team here in xxxxxx. DP/Cam Op must have broadcast experience with good-looking reel. Sound Mixer must provide examples of sound recorded on location.
This first project will be pro bono, but it should garner a good deal of attention, receive decent to major air play, and open doors for future opportunities. Both DP/Camera Op and Sound Mixer should be proficient in capturing man on the street/on-the-go footage if needed.
Email me your online reel (if available) and I will get back to you with my portfolio and more details."
So what does this translate to?
:)
Josh Bass February 6th, 2006, 11:21 AM Pro bono = a pro getting boned. Hahahahahhahahahahahah I kill me. OK, that was terrible.

Craig Seeman February 7th, 2006, 03:31 PM So here's what's gonna happen. 47 people show up with 3 chip cameras, a few have Z1 HDV cameras and 2 even show up with Panasonic HVX200. Some unfortunate person gets to take home with 47 tapes all shot in different and conspicuously unmatching modes, that's the prize for most glamourous shooting, and do a rough cut. He takes the camera masters and the rough cut and each of you gets $10.63 each or $63.82 each for the night's work if he loves the rough cut and uses it.
"thousands daily" are the number of camera people who'll show up for his 1286 camera shoot for the music video.
Anyway, I don't why, exactly, but this just seems like bullshit:

Josh Bass February 7th, 2006, 03:46 PM Yeah, something like that. But on the other hand, with those 1286 different angles, the possibilities for editing are endless.
I think we all know by now that any steady gig paying real money isn't gonna post on craigslist. That's what production managers/coordinators/UPMs are for.
Anyway, I know I've said "best one ever" before, but seriously, this really IS the best one ever. Or worst one. You decide:

This is not a bitch gig, we don't pay people this kind of money to get coffee. Nor is it intense manual labor.

Nathan Chaszeyka February 8th, 2006, 06:01 PM We are looking for a very proficient Editor (Avid) who can also operate a DVX-100 camera. You will also have the opportunity to Produce and Direct. Creativity and knowledge of AVID Xpres DV is more important than editing speed. Sound correction and After Effects experience would be great too. We're going to begin shooting in High Def. soon using the new Panasonic HVX200, so you'll learn that as well. Our show begins airing nationally in 10 million homes in July. After 90 days a significant raise is very possible. You will be the first hire for our first national season, so you truly are on the ground floor. Moving "up the ladder" will be easy for the right person--- because we don't really have a ladder yet. We own all of our own equipment (except a ladder of course) and even a nice studio with green screens. The Executive Producer can be tough to work for at times, so if you have a thin skin please don't apply. He is also extremely sharp and talented, so you might learn a th ing or one hundred. We know the starting salary isn't huge, so we don't need any whiney-bitchy little e-mails telling us that. Occasionally, our dogs stop by the studio to visit, so if you are an animal hater or have some silly aversion, again, don’t apply. We shoot a lot of Vegas nightlife, so if you have a significant other with some jealously problems it's best to put him/her/it in check before applying. We'll need you fairly soon.
Tell us about your experience and education. Thanks.

Sean Marks February 11th, 2006, 01:43 PM For better or worse, we're in the age of DV and DVD. Every joker that watches a documentary on how "Memento" was made thinks that he/she can rustle up 20 dollars and make a short film on DV. If anyone gets a chance, I recommend buying the book "America - The Book" that "The Daily Show" put out last Christmas. There's a great joke made at the expense of indie filmmakers. It's set up as a diagram of how a political rally is held, with descriptions next to everyone whose involved. Next to the kid whose filming it, it says something like "Usually 23, film student, shoots on digital video because like, you can totally make a whole movie for like, 2000 dollars, and it doesn't look like shit it looks like a real movie, I swear".
On a side note, am I the only one who gets a chuckle out of these wannabe's who promise that their short/feature will be the greatest thing since oral sex, yet their ad typically looks like this....
"12 minute a short movie loocing for crue to work. my moview will be versy tense and psycahozlogical so this zwil look greate 4 ur reel. sry i kant affrd to pay any1. send resumes and reels. seriouz inquiries onlyz. 2. "
James Emory February 11th, 2006, 11:25 PM I thought I had seen it all. Now they are casting shooters based on looks. How much do you want to bet that old Joe is one cheap ass son of a bitch!? If so, it's probably because of the retainers paid to his lawyers for all of those suites that have been filed against him. A while back, those pathetic bastards started calling people on the phone trying to sell their porn. They called me several times and I let them have it seriously threating them. What if my 6 year old daughter had answered the phone? They said, we would have asked for an adult. Sick bastards!! Can you believe that sh!t? I would like to punch that son of a bitch square in the mouth!!!!

James Emory February 11th, 2006, 11:30 PM On a side note, am I the only one who gets a chuckle out of these wannabe's who promise that their short/feature will be the greatest thing since oral sex, yet their ad typically looks like this....

fifty dollars! AWESOME!
Update I actually sent an email to this person. This is what I wrote:
Wow. A whole $50 dollars?
You do realize it will take maybe $10,000 in equipment to do this shoot
properly right? And a good 10 hours or so of shooting and 20-30 hours of
post production?
And there's also experience. Or maybe that's not important for you guys.
This was their response:
What? Do I know you? Please stop waisting my time and yours writing
ridiculous, belittling emails like that.... You have waaay too much
time on your hands buddy. Just so you know I got over 20 responses to
that one ad, 2 including offers to do reality TV shows and here you are
writing me a dumb email trying to make yourself feel better about your
pathetic life. Good luck b/c your going to need it and don't bother
writing back b/c I will just delete it. Watch out for us on A&E! TaTa
Damn A&E. I should have taken the gig. :)
Josh Bass February 12th, 2006, 01:20 AM Hey, fellow Houstonian!
I remember that ad. I thought maybe I posted it. Apparently not.
James Emory February 12th, 2006, 02:02 AM Fresnel, at least the Houston area's cheap asses are more creative than our Atlanta cheap asses. Your free jobs seem to be more creative and diverse, they think big. Way to go letting her have it like that. Apparently they haven't read that or other boards to see that there are hundreds of reality shows that are pitched and piloted only to never see the light of day or get immediately cancelled. Apparently she thinks that because someone just mentions it that it is going to happen. Tell her to be sure and send you a copy!
James Emory February 12th, 2006, 02:09 AM I remember that ad. I thought maybe I posted it. Apparently not.
Josh, it says in big bold type, Originally Posted by Josh Bass. If it makes you feel any better, I originally used your name in my reply instead of Fresnel's because I only saw the bold print and thought you sent that message to those cheap asses. Hahahahahaha!
James Emory February 12th, 2006, 02:14 AM I saw this one on the Houston board too and I just had to post it!
"I need help preferable a camera man with experience and professional equipment for which he paid tons of money. Also I will pay you with nothing but some snacks, but hey you can put it in your resume. I will also make you work your ass off but I will give you a BIG thank you at the end so you can feel good for giving away your work. If that wasn’t enough I will recommend you to all my friends by telling them that you work for free. If you are willing to work for more than 12hrs straight I might just give you a soda. As I mentioned before in order to apply for the position I will need to see a demo, your resume, and also a list of the equipment that you own, so I can make a decision on what equipment I want you to bring. Since I am giving you the opportunity to work for me (for free) I expect you to work very hard. Oh yea if you can’t record in HD need no to apply.
Yes!! That is how you sound when you ask for free camera operators. By working for free the value of our work as camera man ends up damaging everybody and you too because when you get ready to make money out of your profession you aren’t going to find anyone to hire you since they can get it for free. And cameras aren’t getting any cheaper."
Josh Bass February 12th, 2006, 07:36 AM Oops! Sorry. Missed my credit in that other post. My bad.
Fresnel Phan February 12th, 2006, 02:14 PM Hi Josh and James. You guys are the inspiration behind what I did...
My previous Update gives you the response that cabaret had to an email I sent from a dummy account.
Out of curiousity, I actually applied for the job using my company email address, to give it a weight of credibility. As it turns out, no credibility was really needed. Transcript as follows:
Thank you for your interest in videoing for The Houston Vixens. Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. We have been extremely busy with All Star weekend and upcoming photo shoots and bookings. Due to the over whelming response we are going to review all resumes and portfolios before interviewing. At this time we need resumes and portfolios or any former video editing that can be downloaded and e-mailed to us. You can also mail to the adddress below. Please have those items e-mailed/mailed as well as contact info to us by Feb 10 next Friday. We will contact those who will be interviewed by Monday Feb 13.
Mistake: Lydia, instead of using BCC or something like that, decided to just address all of us interested applicants directly. So now I have all of my competition's email. I'm not going to post them but I see plenty of "@aol" accounts.
I half debated whether I should send an email to these people or not. I'm dying of curiousity to be at those interviews (but I didn't send in anything). I'd like to believe that everybody on the list was just yanking the cabaret's chain, but I'm afraid not. I guess there are some people desperate enough to do anything for peanuts and exposure. This is what keeps the freeloaders coming back.
Josh Bass February 12th, 2006, 03:09 PM I did a lot of free/underpaid stuff in the first year and a half or so with the camera. Not so much now. Maybe it's people like that.
Back then, though, even though I knew it was for no pay and stuff, I still sorta believed the BS, 'cause I didn't realize that anyone in the world can just say "I'm making a movie/reality show". I felt special. Live and learn.
On the other hand, maybe a lot of these posters are naive fools who don't know how much these services/gear actually cost, normally. Come on, we were all there once.
Fresnel Phan February 12th, 2006, 03:32 PM Yeah I agree that new people have to start some where. I did my share of free and low pay stuff too.
What really irks me about this particular job offer is that this client obviously has money and I would daresay large money. They are fully expecting something brilliant and well put together relying solely on the promise of exposure. That fifty bucks is almost gas money (but not at today's prices). Maybe a DV tape or two.
K. Forman February 12th, 2006, 03:54 PM Would it be out of line to show up with camera in hand, and charge them $50 a tape? Chances are, they won't have their own...
Josh Bass February 12th, 2006, 04:31 PM Well, they MIGHT have all that money, or they may just be full of shit (there seems to be a lot of cases of that going around). People like to make things up, and try to hook you, see.
A guy in NYC who I did some work for when he came down here had a gig lined up for me in Houston, but then found out that the client had no money. So, it could be one of those kind of things. They could be rolling in it, or they could be rolling in it.

James Emory February 14th, 2006, 08:12 PM I thought we had it bad as crew. I have worked on shows for TLC many times and they pay PAs 8 times this much. I think this person is taking the difference of the real pay for theirself.

Josh Bass February 14th, 2006, 10:02 PM Sorry. I misread James' post and made a joke accordingly. Might as well delete this.
James Emory February 14th, 2006, 10:08 PM note to self. . .do not PA for TLC
I don't really know for sure who set that rate for on-camera people. TLC doesn't really have anything to do with it. It's the production company they hire to produce it. It is odd to think that a production company working for a major network would only pay someone $20 to do it especially when most pay PAs get a minimum of $150 / day. This sounds just like the old if you want the job then it's gonna cost YOU backend fee to me.
Josh Bass February 14th, 2006, 10:21 PM See, I didn't read your post carefully. I thought you said "they pay PAs 4 times that". Which would be a lousy PA rate. So, my bad. 160's not bad. I gotta tell you, I've never heard anything good about working for reality TV from the "lower people". . .in Houston, we used to do one of those God-awful court shows called "Texas Justice." Now we do another called "Judge Alex." I know people that've worked on it, and they've got nothing good to say. I actually interviewed for it, never heard back, and found out all the people that were there when I interviewed were fired. Go figure.
The same goes for live TV. I PA'd for animal planet, when they did the Houston dog show last year, got $175 a day, which ain't bad, but it wasn't PAing so much as it was glorffied manual labor (unload truck, build set). I would rather, as a PA, go fetch things, order lunch, etc. Not so much with the lifting and moving of large heavy things.
The moral of the story: stick with movies, commercials, corporate videos.
George Ellis February 15th, 2006, 04:37 AM I see how this shoot will end up. "OK, put the bottle in your shopping cart. We will watch it for you. Just say the lines on the sheet we gave you."
James Emory February 15th, 2006, 07:35 PM Looking for a student or a professional. What a range. He should have said a professional or student since we can't afford a pro. They might as well have said anyone will do. Two or three cameras will be needed, I haven't made up my mind yet. Compensation to be worked out, translation, NO PAY until I get paid which will be never because nobody knows who my artist is!!!!

COMMERCIAL EDITOR NEEDED FOR ACTION / SCI-FI INSPIRED SPOT
Reply to: gigs-134360414@craigslist.org
Date: 2006-02-16, 9:49AM EST
An experienced commercial editor is needed to join our team.
Established film/commercial director with agency contacts has organized a professional team (Producer, Cinematographer, Composer and VFX House) to create a web commercial.
All creatives onboard are serious working-professionals in their prospective fields that are donating their time to have this as a portfolio piece. We are looking to add a commercial editor to donate their time for this project as well. We are creating edgy, high quality work and are looking for like-minded individuals to collaborate with.
Ideally, you will have experience editing commercials in the action genre. This spot will need a lot of quick cuts and must be tight. You would need to have your own editing facilities or access to one. Editing platform does not matter, its your work that’s important.
If you are interested, please email us ASAP. Online portfolio link a plus, but not necessary. We will email you rough cut of the spot and more information.

Dylan Couper February 16th, 2006, 10:26 PM Congrats to this thread, we just broke the 500 post mark.
Although it's kind of sad that there are so many bad job offers out there that we could do it so easily. :)

Here's the deal. I did this before and i hope it wporks for you. On Friday Feb 24 I will be shooting my Truth or Dare porn film. In this we get five guys and three female porn stars in a room and have them play a hardcore game of sexual truth or dare.
We did this last week and had a ball. I need someone with a DV camera willing to come and do the shoot for us. I can not pay this person because we do not have a budget. All money goes to pay the girls. If you are at all interested in doing the shoot and if you have your own DV cmera please get back to us. Be sure to put the word"shooter" as your subject. We really hope to hear from you.

I'm looking for 3 minutes of footage for the beginning of an open-sourced film project. Not a scam, doesn't cost anything, you'll get all the credit... blah blah blah... It's an idea that's getting a lot of exposure and media interest - we're currenlty looking for the opening three minutes to this feature film.
